first the controls suck, I use a Saiteck ST 290 joystick for flight control, at first with level flight fine but when in the midle of a combat sim you try to turn or bank you can't do either, you over/under fly enemy fighters and even when you get close you can't tell who is who. ground attack forget it no way to target enemy ground units no targeting or any thing like it, , the computer programers should refund the pay to microsoft.

Worth the Price

I have played this game for hours, and now read with interest the several critical reviews written by other players. These other writers seem to have more insight into the nuances of flight sims and the evolution of Microsoft's combat series. My impressions may be shallower, but for $25 (the list price on Amazon today) this is an incredible program for any aircraft and/or WWII buff. I have some complaints and there are some silly things about the program that should have seemed obvious to the programmers (no fighter escorts when you want to fly a bombing mission, unnecessary choices among several models of the same plane but some important historical planes missing altogether, imbalance between the devasting effects of a few hits to your own plane while you almost have to empty your guns to bring other aircraft down, inexplicable flight strategies of wingmen and enemy pilots, etc.), but we're not talking about a multi-million dollar Boeing trainer here. "Simulator" is a bit of a stretch for anything ran on a PC and operated with a twenty dollar joystick; this is a "game," and it's sufficiently difficult to be a challenge and to perhaps give us a sense of what it took to survive a mission in WWII (most of us will never really know - and I would be embarrassed to even discuss this toy with any living veteran who actually lived it), but it's simple enough to give the user the satisfaction of the occasional victory. If you are thinking about this for yourself or as a gift, try it with confidence. There may be better products, and I believe that the links on this product page will lead you to them as well. I have also used the MS Flight Simulator 2004, which helped quite a bit in learning to control these planes, although the programs are not exactly the same.

First of all I would like all those concerned to know that this game runs perfectly on WINDOWS XP!! 1.( Selective Startup)2.(Shuting down your Firewalls and Antivirus)3.(Disk cleanup Disk Defrag.)You have to educate yourself on all the little tricks that help the game run.
Also don't foget to install any patches that are available for the game, they make a world of difference. You can't just put the game in without the proper preparation and expect it to run flawlessly. My computer,Windows XP Home Edition,Dimension 3000,Pentium 4,(3GHZ),512MB DDR SDRAM at 400MHZ,80GB Hard Drive, Intel video driver 82865G.Nothing Special!!!!!
The game is GREAT and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!

Wow...REALLY BAD

The only reason I play it at all is because I got it as a gift, thus it was free, and that's about all it's worth...nothing. Buy another sim. I am an instrument-rated pilot so I have experience in aircraft, though no warbirds yet, and the flight dynamics are mildly close to what one would expect them to be. The campaign (i.e. Bulk of game) is worthless. I did an experiment and gave myself unlimited weapons and flew for hours destroying ships and bridges in different grids only to find that they were still there when you returned on another mission. It's as if you do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to influence the campaign. CFS3 is also poorly documented and the only thing that is even worth using is multiplayer fighting. However, the multi is full of bugs too. It doesn't keep accurate track of your kills and deaths and people regularly fly through the ground. I also just recently ran into an aircraft and crashed after it had already crashed into the sea yet remained above the water and took my wing off when I got too close. NOT RECOMMENDED. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

This game was a real dissappoinment, The graphics are good, but the game itself is not. I consider CFS 2 a much better game, also the actual flying of the aircrafts is arcade like. I was expecting a much better game. Wait until the price goes down and then buy it.

why no better?

i can't believe that microsoft released this mess of a flight simulator. after sturmovik, i thought the bar had been raised high enough that microsoft would leap over it and show how to make a graphically beautiful, easy to use, and challenging combat flight simulator. but, no. this game looks like something from 5 years ago in terms of format. buggy, and with the screwiest warp feature i've ever seen. i'm sure a lot of work by good people went into this game, but the team directors didn't do their job. i hope some good mods come out of britain and russia to make this game enjoyable and useful.

A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT

In Summary: buggy, slow, system hog, no real sense of speed or excitement, planes' appearance and flight model not very good, no compatability with CFS2 or FS2002. Product seems unfinished.

Definietely don't buy it unless a patch becomes available to remedy most of the deficiencies.

well I must say I expected more coming from the teams that gave us fs2002.Itis no were near as smooth and unless you have a super comp or play on all the lowest settings then it will glitch which proves very annoying im running 500mb ram and 64mb nvidia g4 and it still glitches and to be honest it aint that challenging ive retaken most of europe in 4 days on the hardest realism. The multiplayer is hard to get going and you need the disc in to play. All in all a bit dissapointing, shame because i thought it would at least compare to fs2002 on a good note the clouds are pretty good.

Disappointing

Time will tell if outside developers can fix this mess. Only buy it if your looking for something along the lines of Crimson Skies. For WWII flight simulator buffs I'd suggest sticking with CFS1 and 2 as modified by the wealth of available add-ons, or IL2 Sturmovik, which is head and shoulders above the rest. Don't bother buying a MS FFB stick either, as it is NOT compatible with this game, even though the documentation states it is.

Bummer!

Do not buy this game if your PC has Intel graphics -- it wont work! And Microsoft admits it! Unless, of course, you want to lay out big bucks for a graphics card. From all the reviews I've read, it's not worth it!
