I honestly thought Microsoft would improve on CSF2, but they seem to have combined CSF1 with Crimson Skies, improving nothing. I sent mine back.
Won't even run

I've run CFS1,CFS2,FS98,FS2000pro,FS2002pro, and many other flight simulators. I was very surprised that AFTER installing the game successfully it wouldn't even run - "the video drivers installed on this system are not supported. CFS3 can not run with this configuration." I've updated my video card drivers to the latest version from the manufacturer and it still won't run. The requirements listed on the box did not indicate any specific video cards it wouldn't work with. Microsoft's forums had other customers with the same problems. No patches, updates, or helpful information from M$. After really looking forward to this product, I am very disappointed. I am returning CFS3 for a refund. Unless you have the very latest computer and video card I don't recommend this sim. Seems like it was pushed out the door before it was ready (before Christmas?).

This is a pretty good combat flight simulator, but it lacks the dimension of a really good campaign mode. There is no story to follow and the missions you accomplish don't really seem to have an affect on the movement of the battlefield front. If you are looking for hours of fun flying this is a good game for you, but not if you are looking for a campaign type game.
A Terrific WW2 Simulator

Before I bought this game I was a little worried about the quality of the game. Many reviews I read efore I bought CFS3 stated that the game ran very slowly on their computers, it was too hard to install, and it was way too difficult to play! This was not the case for me at all. I have a decent computer (It is a 2-year old Microsoft Windows XP with the regular game and graphics card that came with it). The game installed pretty quickly, and it was up and running right after installation. It is up 30 seconds after inserting the CD. I will admit that it is very hard to learn. It really does help if you read the instruction manual that you can get through the help file. I did not have to tone down any of the realism settings that many of the other reviewers had to do. It also runs smoothly on my computer. If you want a game that will challenge you greatly, or if you want a game that has a very realistic WW2 campaighn, then this is the game for you. If you want a game where you spend most of your time dogfighting high in the skies, then this is not the game for you (The game is oriented towards tactical Air-to-ground attack). I recommend this game to any WW2 buff. Great Game!

I loved CFS1 and CFS2, still play them in fact, but this was very dissapointing. FIRST OFF, The graphics play very herky jerky as if my pc was low on memory BUT IM RUNNING 502 MB of ram and the latest vid software and it was still jerky/skippy/paus-ey/ crappy. The sims take too long to load with a Pent.4 no less!!! and the airplane spot view is about the worst I've seen since the old A-10 attack hog game from Sierra. I hope this is not the last atttempt at a great flying game, but they need to improve. Grade wise this game gets a c-.
Maybe microsoft should try for a WW1 simulation ala RED BARON but this time without all the bugs that require 500 patches that dont work anyway!!!!
A Great Game, but make sure to check for Add-ons

CFS 3 is a solid flight sim all around. But it has a number of shortcomings out of the box. The graphics are decent, but some of the realism elements and flight models are lacking in certain regards.
Where this game shines is in its use as a foundation for other add-ons and modifications. There are a great many special add-ons for CFS 3, some commercial and some free. The expansion allows the user to customize the game in every regard.
Another interesting feature of the game is actually its age. While the game is becoming somewhat dated, it also is flexible enough to run on older spec machines, which is a plus for many users with older rigs.
I can suggest this game as a great value, but make sure to look for the free online add-ons as well as the commercial ones. CFS 3 out of the box is somewhat dated, but if you update and customize your game, then you're getting one of the single best flight sims of the past few years. The user community is excellent and supportive in helping new players get started with customizations and add-ons that add to realism and graphics.
The multiplayer experience is also first rate. It's a lot of fun.
The bottom line: A fair game out of the box, but a wonderful title when all the add-ons and updates are brought into the equation. A must have for any serious PC fight pilot.
Very dissapointing

IL-2 is the game I now judge others by. I am a pilot and long time gamer. I was anticipating CFS3 to be equal to or better than IL-2. I don't need to get into the details of the shortcomings of CFS3, the other reviews have done that very well. I am writing this review with hopes of saving someone some money and sending a strong message to Microsoft. The only way to stop them from putting an inferior product out is to affect their bottom line, and not buy. I suspect the reviewers that praise this arcade game, have not tried real sims like IL-2. I have most of the flight sims that have been produced in the last few years, and I have a state of the art computer. I have tried CFS3 on the older computers with the same results. It stinks. Microsoft management needs to buy a copy of IL-2 and ask themselves some serious questions. I am sure Microsoft can do better than the Russian team that put IL-2 together. The only way to get their attention is to not buy the product. Very dissapointing.

Flight 3 could have been one of the best sims we could have.I gave it 3 fun stars because I LOVE the planes in it.They're detail outwardly, the complexity of they're controls and programability of them.I enjoy flying in this one, which brings me to why I,(generously)gave it 2 stars overall.Because this COULD have been such a great experience,it's that much more dissappointing......I am not a pilot, but a friend of mine is,and he's let me have hands on the controls in mid flight. That and a life long love of WWII aircraft.
After reading some of the other reviews here,I can understand a lot of other people's frustration with this game. This turkey demands a basic knowledge of aircraft. Also not everyone can afford a mega monster PC.Well.....I just put my own PC together:
MSI mainboard,AMD3200x64,Dual channel 512Mb RAM,RAID,etc.,and ALL the CH flight controllers for single engine and multi-eng.
And this game still locks up,dumps, and crashes.
The single player mode is a bust also. The AI,"cyber"enemy, never run out of fuel or ammo. And the big "enemy" bombers, dogfight with your fighter and out fly you no matter what you're in.
In all fairness I Have not flown multi player in it.If you don't buy it,no loss.If you do.....Good Luck,
Best reguards,"Wildecat"
