This game is easy enough to play for beginners and tough enough for old hands.
This is essentially "Medieval Risk" with the ability to enter into real time battles when armies meet. The game has may layers including: royal court intrigue, city development, religious persecutions, and more! Each faction from the Byzantine Empire to the Almohads reflects true Medieval warfare (as far as I know!)
This makes a great gift for a boy (or boy at heart) who likes strategy and likes to think. There is a minimal about of blood and gore. After your kid plays this, watch him impress adults with his extensive knowledge of 12th Century European politics! (Ok, that might be a bit much but he'll have fun!)
Great potential -- wish I could get it to work!!!

I played the demo version of this over and over, and loved it! Got the box at Christmas, loaded it, ran it -- can't run any campaigns. Uninstalled, reinstalled -- same problem.
It would appear that my one-year-old PC'c video card isn't good enough for Activision. In spite of testing at 100% DirectX 8.1 compatable, and being able to use it for many other games, it can't handle M:TW.
I strongly suggest that you take a look at the Tech Support board for this game at activision.com before you purchase -- make sure it will work with your system. I wish I had.

This would have been a GREAT game, but it does not work!!!
I tried playing this game on 3 different machines, and it only installed and "worked" on one.
Then, after playing the campaign mode for a few years, this game just crashes at a certain date in the game, and I cannot continue the game.
SAVE YOUR MONEY! A pox on this game!
I am going to burn my copy of this game.

M:TW sounded great in the beginning and I waited for the price to come down. I bought it a few months back and was bored with it after only a week. The AI was lousy and, as other reviewers have pointed out, cheats constantly. And silly things like the never ending "new improved Pope" that keeps sprouting up like a bad weed on your terazzo patio. Yes, it is in the context of "history" but the AI just keeps doing the same thing. Sort of annoying.
And I didn't get the battle scenes everyone was raving about - it was very disappointing. It reminded me of a game I used to play called "Art of War" when armies would sort of shuffle at each other and pluck each other down with arrows. For the uninitiated, that game was played with MS DOS. Point being, the graphics were pretty lame.
So, my M:TW copy is collecting dust right next to my other waste of money, Empire Earth. I am still playing Age of Empires II and it just never gets dull.

I waited for this game all year. I played Shogun over and over for a year. I left work and went home to play this game on the day I got it. The graphics aren't good. Original Total war blows this game away. During the big battles it just becomes a big mosh pit. No detail at all. Don't believe the pictures on the box. It looks nothing like it. There is no way to control uprizings and bandints. You may have conquered lands 10 years before and still have to committ an army from front lines to squash an uprizing. Why do rebels have a better quality troops than me. Thats Stupid and makes no logical sense. The historical perspective is good and I get a kick out of conquest so I still give this game 3 stars but this should have been an astounding game and it's not. Also there is no reason to attack castles. Just wait and it will fall. Diplomacy is useless. Pain in the rear to transport armies by water. One great improvement is time compression. It allowes you to speed up battles once the outcome has been decided.

Medieval: Total War is a great game that makes many demands on the player. Unlike the glut of shoot-em-up, kill-em-all, skate-until-you-drop games out there (many of which are FUN), this is a highly strategic game that requires total concentration. However, the battle sequences are gorgeous! (See? I like kill-em-all stuff too!) Some of the random events do get infuriating, but hey, that's the way things go. Nobody said ruling the medieval world would be easy.

This is one of the most addictive and fun games I have ever played. I spent two entire weekends beating it and it felt like I played it for about an hour. If you have played the original Shogun: Total War, this one is even better. There are most provinces/territories you need to conquer and the sides you can choose to play are much different. For example, in the original game you just played with different Japanese clans but in this game you can be the Italians, Turks, French, Germans, Egyptians, Danes and so on. This means more specific units for each clan and more variation and realism. The map is much bigger and the are at least twice the number of provinces. If you like this time period or just war games in general, I truly recommend this game. If you liked the original, I truly recommend this game. If you like video games of this genre at all, I truly recommend this game.
Incredible game!

This is certainly an extraordinary game. All possibilities it offers really keep you concentrated on it. You must think on who you should marry princesses with, to which generals you confer honors, what facilities to build and where and when to do it, who you should ally with, who you should fight first and the chances you may be involved in a multiple front war, how many forces one should train, the opportunity of hiring mercenaries, your relations with the Catholic Church and so on. This is a must have game for people who already know about history as well fot those who want to learn in a fun way, but also those who don't have such interests will surely enjoy it. This game is worth the price. Go on and buy it!
