One of the best games I've ever played and I've been playing video games for 18 years! I'm a huge horror movie/game fan and I almost crapped in my pants when my buddy changed into the THING the first time. Also it has in my opinion, the best atmosphere in any game PERIOD. I find the other reviews kinda funny, most are split between not liking and loving this game.I love it. The only bad thing is, you have to exit to the main menu to load a game every time you die(this happens a lot). Other reviewers were correct in saying this game is tough, I beat this game in a week, but played hours every night.Very challenging, and if you buy into the atmosphere you will sweat from the tension, when you finally beat a level/boss or the game you just'll sit back and let out a big sigh of relief. Other games I recommend are Painkiller(PC) Doom3(PC) Halo(Xbox) and Manhunt(very violent)(Ps2)

Good-Bye, Resident Evil!

I'm a believer, now. I never thought anyone could challenge the R.E. series and now stand corrected. The Thing was the absolute scariest, playable game ever. I'm not going to list everything that makes this game awesome, but I'll point out a few of the better things here. The graphics are stunning as is the storyline. The monsters 'things' are freaky and come at you relentlessly. The NPC's are fun and actually useful to you. There are many different levels and save points often come few and far between. The controls are easy to use and movement flows gracefully. I really can't think of any downfalls to this game and pray for a sequel!!!!!!
If you love survival horror...There is nothing better!

Metal Gear Solid meets Silent Hill.

Fans of the Metal Gear series will feel somewhat at home in a game like this. THe controls are similar and the environments are also. The only difference is your fighting creatures that look like they were ripped out of Silent Hill or Resident Evil. The twist to the style is the added team element and the possibility of infected team members who can turn on you in seconds. This premise really attracted me to the game and it is a neat concept but the game is flat. The graphics are decent, probably along the lines of the first Metal Gear Solid game with some slight refinements. The weather effects are however very nicely done. I found interacting with the team members clunky however and you never seemed to have the same troops around you for very long. It always seems like they follow you to a point and then you have to find new ones. Makes no sense. They also are very dumb. They constantly ran into my field of fie and didn't fight all that good. One nice thing about them was that you needed them to do things. Medics were great for healing and mechanics were a must. The variety in aresenal wasn't very inovative but they did the job. The shotgun was my personal favorite. Only knock was sometimes you couldn't find ammo anywhere and other times there was more than you could carry. This was cool because you could return to those stores and stock up though. Another negative side to the teamates was the trust factor and weapons. In order to gain a mans trust you had to give him a weapon. This was fine if you were stocked but sometimes you would supply them with a gun and then you would lose them a short while later. This hurt your own ability to keep up good stock of ammo. Plus troops always ran out and never picked up for themselves. I found the best strategy was to equip a man with a flame unit and you hold on to guns. This way you have a one-two punch in order to knock out bigger enemies without having to equip a flame unit yourself. Anyway enough of control gripes. The plot itself was ok. Your typical alien encounter with a hidden web of government corruption and deception. You start out with very little clue as to what is going on at all and the story progresses with very little explination and very and I mean very short cut scenes. This appeals to those of you RPG or adventure gamers who like to play and not watch scenes but for a gamer like me who prefers a good story and plot development was a little disappointed with this game since there wasn't much more to it than running around finding troops, testing their blood and killing aliens. The game itself is labeled as a horror game but I disagree. Aside from the high level of blood everywhere and a few graphic cut-scenes this game is not really scary. Silent Hill used lighting effects as well as eerie sounds. This game just uses a remote environment and some funky looking creatures not much more. Nothing more than a quick startle. Also the games challenge factor is not too hard so to increase difficulty they seem to just throw a ton of enemies at you at once instead of tougher enemies. Even the boss fights are like this as you are getting hit from all sides but 5 different enemies and the boss. Overall the game was interesting but nothing special. I recomend that if you are interested to rent it for a couple days or if you are really compelled to buy it you can find it used for around 15-20 bucks. Other than that I'd stick to some of the bigger titles like Silent Hill or MGS.

Level of difficulty makes The Thing more satisfying

I'm only about 1/3 of the way through and I have to say, this is tougher than Maximo (which is really tough.) There is never a let up in intensity, my synapses literally keep firing non-stop. I may walk away from The Thing with Post Traumatic Stress disorder, but what a sense of relief & accomplishment when you complete a section. It's the way gaming used to be before you could actually save whenever you felt like it.

The game is original, extremely challenging, dark, engaging, and most of all gratifying. Graphics are solid, but not excellent, cut scenes use too much unneccesary profanity that adds little to the story.

You definitely get a sense of dread and fear while you play.

Highly recommended!

This game is great. It picks up right where the movie left off. You come in with your squad to check things out. Things get wierd and people start crackin up. One of the best things of the game is the trust/fear factor. Instead of having die-hard fearless men, you have men who can be afraid or don't trust you, making cooperation difficult. That is unless you stick a gun to there head for a couple seconds. Graphics are good, gameplay is great, aliens are cool, and no music adds to the tension. One thing I forgot to put is that YOU don't know who to trust. Since anyone can be one of the aliens, you don't know whether you should trust him and allow him to have one of your guns or something, or just simply not take risks and blow his head off.

I was expecting more..

I loved the film. If your a true horror fan you'll know the orignal thing was made in the 50's. As a kid I truly loved it. It was the first time I seen a horror film where it was impossible (almost impossible) to kill the monster. I believe they killed the thing with electrcity in the first one. The John Carpenter remake was awesome, much better then the first original.

The game has good graphics & real language, meaning a lot of 4 letter words. If you know anything about the military you know cursing is part of it. Try boot camp..:) But the 4 letter words were really forced. The NPC's just said them for the heck of it. I thought this game would have alot gore & Disturbing images.. It had a few but not impressivly gorey. Most is not realistic looking. Looks more like red paint drippings etc.. The game play is ok. The fear/trust factor is nice but annoying. The AI troops are pretty stupid. I asked my medic to fix & power box & he said he couldn't cause he was blocked. There was another way to get to the power box. Even when I showed him the way he resorted to his pre programed instinks & went toward the path that was blocked. I had to use a gernade to blow up the remaining boxes so he could repair it.

The guns & other items you have in the game are nice. I wish they had a more diverse collection of weapons though. They have 4 distint types of grenades. I wish they had more distint firearms. The most frustating part of the game is your freeze meter. If your body tempture gets too low you die.. You must constanty go back & forth into building to rejuvinate yourself.. This gets repetitive fast & is very tedious & boring. I found this game to be unsuspenseful in most accounts. The game does a good job of picking up the pace the middle parts & will keep your interest during the more tame beginning of the game. Not knowing who is infected is pretty cool, but lacks in suspense too, cause you know your NPC teammates are going to be infected. Thats a no brainer. There really aren't any suprises. Only a few minor ohh's & Ahh's.. If you have a weekend to kick back & relax, rent it.. Just don't expect it to be a great horror survival experience..

Under Rated game...

This game has superb graphics, a huge fun factor, and a crapload of gore and cussing!

People keep complaining that the game is too hard, but isn't that what keeps a gamer on his toes? If a game was too easy (ie-GTA Vice City) we'd just get bored, and end up trading the game in for another more difficult one. This game is difficult for a damned reason, because the creators know it'll take you awhile to beat it.

Quit complaining, it's got awesome graphics, an awesome storyline (which seems to take place AFTER the movie "The Thing"), and enough gore to satisfy any terminal gorehound. This is by far one of the best games for the PS2, and the fact that it's extremely difficult, even on the Easy difficulty setting, only adds to the fun factor.

It's difficult, and keeps you coming back to try again. If you can't pass, that simply means you suck and need a more strategic mindframe.

I am so happy they made a video game based on "The Thing". I am also happy that the entire game is geared for adults, choc full of general unpleasantness. I got this game 3 days ago and I haven't stopped playing. The controls & format are easy to operate and I have to admit, the game is scary. There are "Things" in the game that look very realistic down to veiny skin and [saliva]. (use the sniper rifle to get a closer look at them, otherwise your dead). Like GTA3, this game is rated-M for a reason, I love playing a game that was designed for me. I'm in my 30's and there is nothing cute or cuddly about this game. It's gruesome, gory, dark, violent and has no redeeming qualities that people want to expose their children too...kinda like the real world. But as an adult, I can say this game is well worth every cent. This will be one of the games that I keep in my PS2 collection, I still have and enjoy some of my older titles I bought when I first purchased my PS2.

Konami and the other developers who created The Thing did an excellent job, the detail and game play is top notch, there are parts of the game where you will jump and just like in the movie (JC's version) ...you don't know who to trust. There is no annoying music soundtrack to distract you, If you look at pictures that are posted on the walls throughout the game you'll see pictures from JC's Movie. The "Things" react like any other animal that wants you dead, they will react to sounds (such as gunshots) follow you up and down stairs and quietly wait for you around corners and dark areas. This game is not easy, I'm having a hard time staying alive. But that's a challenge I like, in this game you'll find out that it's not just a alien threat bent on seeing you dead... You'll find out that if someone in your squad has too much stress and flips out will shoot at anything that moves (including you and the rest of your squad). If you act too weird, you'll get waxed by your squad. If you hang outside in the cold too long, you'll freeze to death.

If your a adult that likes a game geared on the macabre ..."The Thing" is a game you should seriously get. You wont be disappointed.

One tiny little negative thing that I can say about this game that doesn't really matter...
The developers could have went the extra mile and included John Carpenters theme music to the opening / closing credits and the menu screen. ...or even better, had JC himself as a consultant to create the gloomy hopeless feeling he did to his movie.

More action than horror

First off, I would say that The Thing is an above average linear game in the realm of the survival/horror genre of PS2 games. The game's basic premise is taking on the role of the lead character that is given the undesirable task of investigating an artic research station that has been taken over by an alien entity which looks like a really nasty mix between swamp thing and last year's tuna casserole you forgot about in the back of the refrigerator. The smaller manifestations of the Thing vary form looking like little skulls running around on chicken legs to goo spitting spiders. Not exactly inspiration for staying up all night wandering what that sound was outside your window. But, in the Thing's defense it certainly makes a nice target for spraying with your shotgun and then barbecuing it with the flamethrower.
The game's primary focus is on realistically bloody combat, with the arctic station as its backdrop. The game does contain the basic elements of squad teamwork, but it comes across as more of an afterthought than anything else. The redeeming element of the teamwork though is the concept of trust and fear in each of your teammates, as it gives them a feeling of having different personalities and temperaments; to the point where you might actually feel a bit sorry when you have to waste them upon their being infected by the Thing. Which gives the basis for the NPC's fears; anyone can turn into the Thing at any time. This is a really nice touch as the NPC teammates don't feel as static as they do on games like Project Eden. You'll find though that as long as you have an extra piece on you, all you have to do is give it to a newfound teammate to get them to trust you. This also introduces a very simple form of inventory management and conservation as you sometimes have to decide whether you should use that last med kit to heal your fellow teammate or save it for yourself.
The difficulty level is somewhere between low and medium. I for my part would have liked to have had more encounters with boss characters and Thing manifestations that are harder to kill. The few bosses present in the game are relatively easy to defeat once you recognize the pattern in which they're swinging their gigantic appendages in their mostly futile attempts to clobber you. Another addition that would have upped the difficulty would have been harder puzzle solving, as the puzzles essentially comprise fetching keys to open locked doors and finding engineers to fix certain power panels that you the character cannot fix yourself.
In my own humble opinion the graphics for this game are top-notch and maintain a pretty even frame rate throughout the game, even when you've got a whole room of little Things leaping at you. The flame effects for the fires and flamethrower discharges are very nice. About the only complaint that can be leveled against the graphics is that the collision detection can be a little off, hence being able to stick your hands in to the wall sometimes.
In conclusion, I reiterate that the game's focus is on the bursting into the room with both guns blazing style of action (though you will find areas where you'll have to pick off enemy commandos with your sniper rifle). The game does provide some real challenges here and there, but for the most part it's pretty much a nice stroll through the blood stained halls of the arctic station. Though this doesn't sound like much fun, this game somehow miraculously makes it fun. So, if you're looking for a good action game to spend about five or six hours (depending on how good you are) on, The Thing is a pretty good bet. If you want deep psychological themes which give you that nice creepy feeling and make you want to play it at night, your better off sticking with the Silent Hill series or Fatal Frame.

The Thing is a game of thriller based on the movie. This game is intence with every move you make. The game takes place in Antartica and is hard because of it. You will over come some things that spit, swip, and make a grousom mess. Some of them are half your size and some the size of a rat but all dangerous. When your team is done making a sweep of an area that has been down your character finds out that team Alpha has not responded to base.Black(your character)tries to go to that area to find them and there problems with communicating. When he gets there somthing terrible happens. Buy this game to see and feel the fear. This is a game worth a shot so look into it.
