ah a sequil to the movie

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 7

Okay, first off I wanted to say this is a great game. It combines survial horror with the basic run away. The inovated trust/fear is well origonal, it has never been done in the history of gameing. I like seeing the people mutate in front of me so I have the advantage.
It starts off where the (wonderful, great, etc) movie left off. You get there and the place looks like a old Yanni concert happened only its very cold. The plot is interesting enough with some very good graphic's (for the grapic snob)and talented voice acting which sorta rivals MGS & MGS2.Not really.
Pro's : graphic's 9.7
music 10 (c'mon it features Saliva)
'scream scale' 6.7
voice acting 10
Cons's : clunky animation
bad lip-sync
the begining seems a little to rushed
Overall : 9.1
This doesn't hurt the game much but this doesn't seem to resemble Resident Evil. Oh well The Thing is a great sequil.

One of the BEST games for PS2!!!!!

The Thing is absolutely one of the best PS2 games that i have ever played! The Thing reminds me of a cross between Resident Evil the game and the motion picture Aliens. It takes place after the famed John Carpenter flick "The Thing" where you are in control of a squad of guys who have to investigate the loss of communications with an Antarctic Military base. In the course of your investigation you discover that some strange invection has caused the death of all the workers on the base and your fellow teamates. You pick up weapons and ammunition, and can distribute them between your squad to your trusting. Yes you don't know who you can and can't trust because any one of your squad members can be infected and turn into a monster at any given time. You in turn have to gain the trust of your teamates so they don't go into a rage of panic and try to gun you down because they think you're going to turn into a monster. You can also gun down anybody you think is infected as long as the rest of your team trusts you. I haven't finished the game yet but I couldn't put the game down after I started playing it. "The Thing" gets five stars because the story is great, the graphics are good, there are swarms of monsters that come after you, and the gameplay is simply fantastic and sometimes quite amusing. It is about time that they released a game that is a real challenge to play. I would recommend that everyone go out and buy "The Thing" because I think it is the best game out there right now for PS2 and wil be one of the best games ever for the PS2.

Amost all it was cracked up to be.

While The Thing was't a bad game, it doesn't really accomplish what it promised to do, and comes nowhere near duplicating the intensity of the Carpenter film by the same name.

While the graphics and gameplay were good, there were enough glitches and oversights to imply that it was rushed into the stores. Cut scenes occasonally cut short and can be accidentilly bypassed if you are moving when you trigger them. The dialogue has a habit of not matching up with mouths, and the voice acting ranges from impressive to painful at random intervals.

The most disappointing thing about The Thing was the most captivating aspect, playing with team members that might be infected, or think you are. In theory and description, this is a great idea, but the actual performance falls short. Instead of starting off with a team of characters you can grow to love and hate, characters are introduced and killed off with such a frequency that their names and existence become meaningless. Losing team members only bothered me if it was against mission objectives. Also, their death by infection from The Thing is either completely random or programmed at set locations, eliminating any feeling of control over the events. Note: In the movie, people needed to be alone for a couple of hours in order for The Thing to assimilate them, yet in the game people by your side from the start suddenly explode into hellish creatures, thus destroying any logic to the destruction. An once interacting with other characters becomes uninteresting, the whole game slumps into the typical shoot monters/throw switches routine that plagues most games these days.

When all is said and done, The Thing offers fun gameplay, ad it isn't a complete waste, but it would have been a much more enjoyable game if it had been realized as a survival horror adventure game, and not a run and gun action platform. The atmosphere would have been easier to maintain, and the story and characters would have had a deeper impact. Close, but sadly enough, no cigar.

Awesome

I got "The Thing" the same day I got "Grand Theft Auto Vice City" and belive it or not ( being the GTA fan that I am) I have only just opened Vice City, that's how much fun "The Thing" really is. The game picks up where the movie left off. You control Blake, the leader of a small pack of guys sent by the army to investigate strange happenings in a facility in Antartica. You must make sure all the guys on your team trust you by using a fear/trust system just like in the movie. If one of your guys cannot trust you, he may turn on you and try to kill you. The aliens (or Things) are very interesting in the way they look and act, they are not mindless zombies like in "Doom", sometimes thay will sneak up and pounce on you when you are fighting another one. The graphics are gory but great. I recommend this game for anyone who liked the movie. Adult may find it a little easy but kids will love it. This game is a lot of fun and is packed with a lot of scares.

Great!

I found this game to have superior graphics, audio, and storyline. The best thing about this game that is different from other games are the fear and reaction-interaction of the other teamates with the main character. They aren't just a bunch of mindless backup guys that do whatever you tell them. If they get to afraid, they could start freaking out and blasting their gun at you or other teamates. It's up to you to keep their fear level down. The graphics are a little gruesome, especially when using the sniper rifle. This game does live up to the movie! I read a couple of reviews where they said it was a cheap imitation of socum or half life. This game is more like resident evil with soldiers & monsters instead of zombies. If you like any of the resident evil games or blade 2, then this is the game for you. I'd like to see more games like this being made! So far, this is the only game made where the backup guys are not a bunch of mindless robots.

Wished for some THING better

"The Thing," based on John Carpenter's classic sci-fi horror film, is a step in the right direction for the survival horror genre in many ways, but it never truly lives up to its potential. The game designers could have taken a great leap forward in terms of gameplay and character interaction, but instead they chose a slight hop in favor of more action-oriented gaming. It's a shame, because the best thing about "The Thing" is recruiting allies, all the while keeping an eye on them lest they be Things themselves, even as they're keeping their eyes on you to ensure their own personal safety. These guys get scared, get sick when they stumble into a chamber splashed with gore, and sometimes demand that you prove your loyalty to them at gunpoint. But most of the time you'll just be running around shooting creepy crawlies that are fairly identical to one another, and just aren't very scary. That's not to say, though, that the game is completely devoid of scares - every now and then you can expect to be startled by some unexpected event. It's just that from a game based on "The Thing" property, you expect a little more than you get. Add some bland, if sometimes atmospheric, levels into the mix (they all look pretty similar to one another), and you've got a game that disappoints as much as it excites. I only hope another game (or a sequel) builds upon this unique gameplay concept and therefore makes the ultimate survival horror experience. In the meantime, this should tide you over, if you don't expect too much from it.

Final Score: C

Rent It

I don't own very many games. I could say it's because I'm very selective, but really it's because I don't have much money. Because of that I try to select games that have alot of replay value. Games that you can play and beat, then continue playing without just rehashing the same thing. I bought the game because the graphics were outstanding, the game play offered some new features, like the element of fear in dealing with the other characters. Also I am a big fan of the movie. The game reproduces the feeling of the movie really well, but the original elements of the character interaction could have been handled better and the game has very little replay value.

While the fear/trust elements are interesting, sometimes they are just cumbersome. As other reviewers have mentioned the ability to blood test your team members is sometimes useless, the tests are better spent testing yourself to gain the trust of the others. The movie relied more on mystery and suspense, not knowing where the Thing was going to strike. In the game there are hundreds of small things running around, coming seemingly out of nowhere. Some levels don't offer enough assistance/weapons and they don't give you any idea what you are supposed to do. You just end up repeating the levels again and again, until you practically memorize what is going to happen. That takes some of the fun out of the game.

The game is still fun. But it only takes a couple of days to beat, even with repeating some levels again and again. After you beat it, the game doesn't offer anything new. There's no difficulty levels, the only changeable options available is narrowing the auto-aim area. So you just end up playing again. Overall, I'm dissapointed with this game. It does NOT provide worthwhile entertainment. I recommend you rent it. If you fall in love with it, and you have money to burn, then by all means buy it.

Great Horror Game ......

First let me start by saying this game is excellent. I haven't beat all of it, but I'm getting there. One reason i love this game is because of the AI. In most games your partners obey you like mindless robots. That's not true in this game. Your men realize you have just had an alien encounter and they don't trust every person they see. You have to control their emotions. The way you control their emotions depends on whether they remain loyal to you or decide that you just might Be one of the aliens and decide to put you down. You yourself can also decide one of your fellow soldiers might be infected and you can choose to paint his blood all over the wall. I also liked the fact you have to manage your supplies among your teammates. You have to watch your items, ammo, etc. The downside though is that your men can't carry more than one weapon and cant carry in items such as gernades, med packs, and fire extinguishers. The game features a descent amount of weapons which you can choose to give to your men to help fight off "the things" or you can choose to keep it for yourself. Your men actually help you out alot in this game and dont watch you get torn apart by the opposition as in some other games.
The music is great, graphics are good but could have been better. The graphics is the reason I gave this game 4 stars (although I would rate it 4 1/2 if i could.) The game play is great. You fight off a variety of ememies from Big Things to Small Things to enemy soldiers. The game features a good amount of suspense and horror, but not quite as much as resident evil. The story is great...so far...(I haven't beat it yet.) I would reccomend renting this game 1st then buying it if you like it. This game may be only be worth renting for some.

This is the most stress game that I've ever played on PS2, I really enjoyed it.
Pros
-Great History
-Team Work (This is a real good add on)
-Easy Control (You must be checking constantly the scary and thrust status of your teammates)
-Good Weapons specially the grenade launcher
- Switch among first and third person view.

Cons
-The graphics could be better
-Be careful with the distance when you use flame weapons

I strongly recommend the game if you are a lover of the action -adventure genre.
And don't forget to rent or buy the Movie!!!.

Good But Somethings Is Wrong.....

As I write this, I see that this game has a 4 star average rating.

Please don't misunderstand, I liked this game but I struggled to find reasons to give this game 3 stars instead of 2.

The game is lacking in a few areas.

First, you never really seem to know what you are supposed to be doing. For example, on the very first level I was told I needed a key. I searched around for an hour and right before I was going to shut the game off, I tried the door again and it said I had the key.

The next few levels are basically the same way. You never really have a clear understanding of what you need to do. You always know why you are supposed to do it, but not specifically WHAT you need to do to go further in the game.

Second, you can only stay outside in the cold for a few minutes of gameplay or you die. Why in the world would a military group go into the sub zero temperatures and not dress warm enough is just plain stupid. You will spend HOURS, HOURS, HOURS, running around in the snow looking for who knows what just to run back into the little houses to get warm. Its frustratingly stupid.

Third, you will encounter literally hundreds of little tiny "things" that get seriously repetitive after, oh I would say the first 578,352 time you kill them.

Fourth, the game features "squad based" interaction and the squad members "trust" in you to preform simple tasks.

I would ask a simple question, do you really think a military medic would refuse to heal you because he saw a small "thing" 20 gameplay minnutes ago and is still so freaked out he does nothing? The idea was a good one, but it really takes away from the gameplay.

Last, I want to touch on some of the positive points. The game can make you jump from time to time. It can be a little scary early on until you get used to the "things" running around. I think the music was superbly done for the game. I also think the graphics are not half bad. Not as good as some, but better than others. The most realistic sounds you will find in a game as well. The way the snow crunches under your feet is well done.

Overall, I think the idea of this game was great I just think that some of the features take away from what could have been a super game!

Better to rent this one then to buy it...
