Bustin' Out was more fun -- this is a step backward

I bought this on the first day it was released. What a disappointment. It has less functionality than any Sims game -- as far as building or dressing people or aspirations or....well anything.
The aspirations are stupid. For example, if your main character hires a maid that doesn't stop someone else in the house from wanting to hire a maid days later (even though the maid is walking around in front of their face!). How dumb is that!!
The control panels are clunky. You have to pause the game to go find out when your character has to go to work or what they need to advance in their job. Plus, your PS2 will grind constantly and don't even get me to talking about the terribly slow load times!!
Bustin' Out was way more fun -- more action and with a lighter sense of humor. Plus you can buy it cheap -- instead of this overpriced, uninspired mess.
A game that will keep you playing... and playing... and playing.

I came on here before after I bought the Sims 2 and read some of these reviews. Most of them are on the negative side of the fence, and I fail to understand why people just don't appreciate this video game more. Sure, I've read the complaints, but they are nit-picky and shallow. What makes a game a good game, is the actual content and fun factor. STOP COMPARING GAMES TO OTHER GAMES! When someone rates a game, you are not supposed to strictly compare it to the PC version... do not base your reviews on the PC version. Base your review on the GAME ITSELF. That is the point of this whole thing.
I really enjoyed this game. It was the first Sims game that I really got involved with, and since Christmas of last year I have been a die-hard Sims fan. Not only is the game easy where it should be easy, but it is challenging where it should be challenging. You get to work to acheive your character's goals and aspirations, so that you can keep moving up the food chain. What really makes this game good is the first-person controlling! Other Sims games, as far as I know, don't have this to the extent that Sims 2 on PS2 does. I am very proud of Maxis for releasing this control --- it is what makes the game exciting. You really become your character instead of just controlling him/her.
There are many options to choose from when socializing. Want to do a funny trick? Insult the person? Tell them you love them? You can do all of those things AND more.
Sure, the game has its flaws. Every game has flaws. But the PROS of this game greatly out-weigh any CONS. The graphics could have been a little better, and there should have been more options in the department of building onto houses. But overall, I think this game is worth every penny. It is addictive. You will keep playing... and playing... and playing. And that's what games are all about.
Better than you think.

I've seen a lot of negative reviews for this game. In spite of this, I still find it completely addictive. Sure, it would have been nice if the family features from the PC version could have been included, and there are some flaws (long loading times, anyone?), but overall it is not a bad game and I highly recommend it.
the SIMS but not the Sims!! Where did the original makers go??

After seeing a few reviews on here I see I am not alone. SIMS 2 was nothing at all like the first Sims. The Sims are supposed to be virtual people. In the beginning they started out in moms house and went from there to learning, cooking, and basic people skills.. then moving out they find careers, promotions, get excited about life, have a hard time keeping money lol, get married and have Children (if they choose). All in all you are addicted. You love it because it is REALISTIC. SIMS 2 promised to be even better. Whatever SIMS lacked it looked from the package to have. And I even hoped they'd add pets as they did with the kewl game the URBZ. But no. This game is a disappointment and I hope that the makers do read these reviews. Here in short is what we want... we want a realistic sim, we want them to actually care or get excited that they made a new dish or got a Promotion!!, we want them to have relationships that seem to matter.. not be swingers so to speak. Even when married the SIMS just still seem so single. The emotions are just all wrong.. the first SIMS had emotions much more believable.. frustration, bordeom without dying, crying without getting hysterical, and real happiness when they were doing well in life. The makers must have been totally different or just never played the original themselves. Also, the outfits are way to runway model and when your sim is not totally slim the clothes look horrific. I keep my slim kate moss just so it looks okay in the game lol. I just dont get how fast the game goes either!! You meet everyone and see every house WAY before you have even gotten your first career mastered and now I am at the end with no where new to go or no one new to meet but still need to master another 6 careers with 6 levels or promotions each, not to mention other things Ive yet to do to HELP the strangers my SIM meets.. even though Ive tried to meet ALL gold goals. AND ONE BIG THING.. if you are late for work and you have mastered all the skills for that career.. and you get fired.. guess what.. you will never gain your skills back once the game strips you of them. It will show all the stars and say you did but when you go into career it will show that you are still stripped of them and you will NOT get your PROMOTION no matter how hard you try to erase that day you were late!! GOD what a frustrating game. I play it because Ive won every SIMS Ive played.. and they were all great.. bustin out was not as good but the pace and the excitement and happiness of the SIM was great.. the URBZ was totally different and very challenging.. But this SIMS 2 was supposed to be the best ever ever and it was not at all. VERY disappointed. We just want it to be realistic!! When my sim becomes a supermodel at her last promotion after all that work she just stood there at the car and changed her clothes.. where did the jumping up and down and being so happy its silly go?? lol.. we like that kinda thing!! Heck Id be happy in real life to get a job as a Mayor! LOL SIMS 2 pets I am hoping and hoping.. is more REAL!!!! And maybe there will be a life for the SIM beyond the pets?? God I hope so. LOL. KEEP MAKING THESE SIMS electronic arts!! But please hire the guys who did the first one!!!!! HELP!!
Good but not great

I probably would have enjoyed this game more if I hadn't played the PC version with all of the expansion packs first. My brother bought this for me for Playstation2 knowing how nuts I was over the PC version. The PS2 version is definately completely different from the PC version which isn't bad. It just gives me yet another game to mess around with. My disappointment lies in the inability to have children and build families. My female Sim is hooked up with Hector, the romance sim hottie from the HMS Amore. I have two hot sims that I was hoping to hook up and create a gorgeous family with and much to my surprise I can't. What's the point of getting married then? I think I'm now just going to start over with a romance sim and conquer all then! :) It's a fun game but overall it's pretty pointless since you can't really go anywhere with it beyond the story mode set up. Free mode is pointless since you can't continue a family through generations. I hope they create a Sims game for PS2 that has the family capabilities eventually. I don't see why the PS2 format can't work the exact same way as the PC version. I have a controller for my PC that looks a lot like the PS2 controller and I bet if I wanted to hook it up and use it for the PC game, it'd work fine and I'd still be able to manipulate things with no prob. Not sure why the PS2 format was made so completely different from the PC format.
well.....

I really liked the origional Sims for PS2. But this one was terrible. I played it for a very short time and stuck it on my game shelf and now it's probibly covered with dust. You can only do one thing at a time and I hate how people just move in with you for no reason at all. Yes, the graphics are better than the Sims 1 for the PS2 and it is actually fun to create your people but still this game is just plain terrible. I also hate this weird socialization zone that you get into. I highly recomend not to touch this game. BAD!!!!!
Awful

I had played Sims 1 and thought that it was a fun game, which is why I bought Sims 2 Holiday version for my hubbie and I this Christmas. I was shocked to find how morally inappropriate it was. A game that encourages cheating on your spouse and teenage sex has no place in our home. No wonder the divorce in our country rate is so high! This is what we are teaching our teens is acceptable adult behavior? I also think that the rating for this game should definitly be mature!
Fun...at first

I received this game as a gift and it was fun/addicting at first, but I then realized that fulfilling the needs of your Sim was taking up the majority of the Sim's day. There was little to no time to work on skills. The time is paced fast and days go by quickly. Unlocking all locations is a bit anti-climatic, so save yourself the wasted time and get the cheat. While you're at it, get the Max All Motives cheat; it might give you time to actually improve your skills (but, then again, there's a cheat for that, too). Also, all the Sims look the same. They never age nor can they start a family. There aren't any pets either unless you count the 'dog in the purse' accessory as a pet. The game just runs through the same mundane tasks over and over. Sleep, eat, go to work, talk with a Sim, and repeat. For the first couple of months, I WAS addicted, but, now, I'm left wanting more. I read other reviewers singing the praises of the PC version, so I made the purchase; it should be arriving next week.

Ima start out with saying if you want to talk about the computer game then do that on another page.Dont come to the ps2 version's page and complain that its not like the computer game.
I like this game. One of the first ps2 games I dint beat or get board with in a week.Ive had this game about a year and still play it.
PROS: ~there is a 2 player mode
~although it doesnt seem like it would matter, you get to directly control your Sim instead of pointing and clicking
~food opitions are the best ever to come to come to the playstation consul.First you pick from tons of kinds of meats, veggies, fruits, etc then you choose how you cook it from blending to microwaveing and stove top cooking
~story mode is more resinable and exiting
CONS: ~costimizing Sims apperance (besides clothes) is somewhat limited
~most of the guys are extremly ugly
~There hasnt been even an attempt to improve jobs or hair styles
