I just got off the phone with Take2. They say this game is incompatible with ALL Intel Graphics cards. I can't comment as to its playability as when I try and play it the players appear to be floating in midair and there is no map. In addition do a google search. Even non-intel graphics cards are having SERIOUS issues with running this game. I'd hold off on buying it..
Very Buggy!!

If this game was at all playable, it would rate 5 stars. However, as other reviewers have noted, at best this is BETA software. I have a fairly powerful system, well in excess of the recommended requirements, and CIV 4 crashes constantly after I reach the 1800's. The game is completly unplayable! Save yourself a headache and wait for patches. Until then, I'll be playing Civ 3.

Everyone has either been complaining of all the bugs this game has or how it doesn't run on their computer. Well, for every bad report, there deserves to be a positive one if a person has a positive experience. Well that would be my case. Let me say, I really didn't expect the game to run very good at all on my computer. I plan on upgrading in a couple months, and figured I'd just buy it now and try it out a bit until I got my new system. Well, I was pleasantly surprized to find it runs mostly smooth on my system, at 1024*786 res and medium graphic settings. No locking up, and pretty much no sputtering. Mostly smooth. And the graphics are quite beautiful. My system is the following
AMD 2200+
GeForce TI4200 128mb 8x
512 MB RAM
Nothing too special at all. But hey, it works pretty nicely for me. Also, I may have experienced some bugs in the tutorial, but nothing to really gripe over. I haven't come across any real bugs in the game, so it's all good. Don't let the bad reviews stop you from buying this game. There's so much depth to it, and it really has the potential to keep you enthralled for who knows how long. Well, I didn't know what to expect going into this after all the complaints, but my experience turned out good, so you should take the dive too!!
I'm so frustrated

Like most of you I play Civ since 1992 and I was very excited to start today with Civ IV.
Sadly, most of the bad comments I have read before are right.
I have a ATI graphic cards and it is simply impossile to see the main map, instead I just have a black screen with cities and units... I will not expand on the long list of bugs I have already faced, you read that before :(
I bought the game today and I KNOW there is nothing I can do about it, I will bring it back to the shop tomorow and wait for an updated version. So disapointed.
Wonderful game, bad company

I am a huge Civ fan. I have been playing this series since Civ II and I bought this game only days after it came out right here on Amazon.
One important thing this review must explain about this game is it is more fast pace then the previous installments.
When it was intially released, numerous compliants were made on Civ fan boards that there are a lot of bugs and problems trying to play this game.
Recently, there was a update that fixed a lot of problems, but cause some problems for some. This was a big disappointment for me when every time I made it to the modern age while playing a large map, the game would crash to my desktop.
For many people, they were required to fix a lot of system settings before they could play. These people were not merely low end users, but people who never had problems playing Half life 2, battlefield 2 or quake 4. These games are one of the top system demanding games out there right now and for some reason they were experiencing problems with Civ 4.
One explaination that was said was that the company that made this game (2K Games) released the game too early and a lot of people complained that they were sucker in to buying a beta version instead.
It took over a month before some changes were made and because of the frustration, the hype of playing this game died.
I advise you all to read fan sites before buying this game. Make sure problems that happen now, are fixed before buying this game.
Buggy but promising

I have to agree with all the negative reviews. I have a powerful machine, 3gh Intel processor, 1 gig ram, 256 mb geforce fx 5500 graphics card with the latest drivers. It runs (and plays) great for about 50 turns. But as more of the map is exposed it runs more and more slowly and eventually crashes. The game is fun, I enjoyed it as long as it ran. But I should have waited about 6 mo's for the patches.

Please be VERY VERY care before buying this.
The Minimum specs are NOT enough to run this game. You need a truely powerful beast.
Go over to any of the CIV Forums and you will see just how many 100's of people are having with this game.
Wait a month a least for a couple of patches to be released.
This release is a rushed and shambolic disgrace.
WAIT. DON'T BUY IT.

I have been a fan of CIV games since CIV I. I haven't been able to play Civ 4 because the wold map is black. Checking CIV forums you will notice many other problems with different system configurations. Even with those that exceed the min requirements. Check the CIV forums first.
Moreover, customer support is non existant. I have sent emails, checked the web page, and called tech support. Nobody shows up.
Very disapointing. 2K Games needs to work harder to solve the many issues CIV 4 has. Wait at least 2-3 months.
It's brilliant!!

This game is fantastic, seriously, don't give it a bad review because you can't get it to work. I mean, obviously you haven't played it yet, so how can you possibly give a legit score?
If you simply have a look for the many dedicated fansites this game has, they'll help you out, just like they did for me.
My game wouldn't allow me to even play at the beginning, and woulden't tell me the problem, but, sure enough, after 5 minutes of websearching I found the solution...and after about 30 minutes of following instructions I was deep into the wonderful world of Civilization 4.
It's a top game, with a fantastic soundtrack. It definately has a faster pace than the old Civ games, however, it gives the option of slowing the game down to the pace of the old Civ games too. It certainly adds intensity in the rush for religious domination in the early stages of the game, and makes you keep your focus on staying above the computers.
Take heed, however, slower computers will strongly sour the experience. If you have a computer any less than a year old, you're most likely pushing your luck with Civ 4.
But all in all, it's definately one of the best strategy games, or even...best game, I've ever played. Very, very strongly recommended.
Civ 4 Let down!

This game was hyped from the get go...Look at the first post, well before it was released.
I received the game which locked up as it has major problems with ATI video cards.
Also, with my new alienware laptop where the inital load movie plays it jumps and pops like pop corn.
It's like this game wasnt even play tested. Very disappointed.
Don't buy this game until a patch is released!
