I recommend going straight to the Preferences and reducing some of the animation. This makes the game move much faster.

I would give it zero stars or even negative stars if I could. Will not even play on my top of the line new Dell. Sid should be ashamed of this mess!

i picked up the last copy of this from my local bestbuy and its already off my hands. why? because it only took a few hours for me to go all the way through the game. some people have complained that it was too much micromanagement, but i felt it was really the opposite....a superficial game lacking any meaningful depth or strategy on the level of something truly great like medieval: total war. after i placed my settlers and staked out my cities, i pretty much just hit enter a billion times only stopping every now and then to research something new or build military units when threatened. hugely disappointing.
Fresh look to a grand old game

Civ 4 is a fascinating expansion to the game. I am going to discuss a couple of high points that point out the improvements.
The combat system. I must admit that I was a bit leary when I read they were going from separate values for attack/defense to a single value. What no one said in the pre-release press was that units can be promoted in different ways. For example, a unit can gain a 10% attack bonus, or do better at city defense. A unit might be better at fighting in forests and jungles or in hills. The point is that you can tailor make your units to achieve specific results. The end result is that the combat system is far more sophisticated and requires a lot more thought that you might think at first glance.
The tech track is quite different. You can find many of the same sorts of things, but this too requires you to think through your strategy. Going for tanks might leave you without horseback riding, and before you get to your technology that produces tanks your civilization could be completely overrun - even though you are more advanced.
Barbarians - I really like what they have done here. Barabarian technology proceeds along the same pace as yours and sometimes ahead. They have cities! Instead if just wiping out a camp and getting 25 gold pieces, you can conquer a barbarian city and make it yours. Of course, you need to survive the opening turns. I've had a few games where things turned into a Fort Apache outcome where wave after wave of barbarian overruns your civilization.
BTW: Pillaging is a blast. It turns out that you need more than just mines. You need mines for specific types of materials (i.e. copper, iron, uranium etc...) and a successful pillaging campaign can target these resources denying them to the enemy. What makes it great are the graphics. The new graphics system zooms in and out and pans smartly.
Worth the wait - yes, although I wish I had this game a couple of years ago.
Worth the money - definitely.

I am a Civilization fanatic. I play Civ III a couple of hours each day, as I did with Civ I and Civ II. I also own several expansion packages for Civ. I really looked forward to this new release.
When it arrived (advertised as working on Windows ME), we installed it and then proceeded to try playing it. Problem after problem occured, but we continued modifying our PC until finally we finally ran into a problem with the video graphics card. Nowhere was it ever mentioned that a new graphics card was required. The systems requirements have been revised to do so since I bought it, but NO MENTION was made back then. If it was made to be run on Windows ME, it should be capable of running with graphics cards from that era or it should be clearly stated otherwise - not something a customer has to dig out for himself. I have heard that 40% of people have encountered some problem that stops them from playing right out of the box. That's disgusting. I am out the purchase price unless I buy a new system for this one game. Maybe they should hire somebody who cares about their customers to manage the next project.

The good news is that thre is enough in civ iv to keep you deeply engaged for a long time. THe bad news is that it is a 50/50 shot whether your hardware will run it and this will keep you deeply enraged for just as long. As for the game, a lot of effort has gone in to dumbing down civ so that all the player has to do is watch animated battlers. Sort of like battle chess, only the squares you have to move to have been highlighted for you. Religion is in and its nice to know that if you found a religion you potentially have a nice source of income, one of the few things in the game that correspond precisely to reality.

I pre-ordered this game as I used to be a big fan when I was younger, however they moved away from the simple strategy to big graphics
I can be easily entertained with simple strategy but graphics are pointless in my opinion if the strategy is boring
this game has no strategy involved just better graphics
it annoyed me so much when I bought it because I wasted all my time with it to begin with because of all the problems with the game play and saving
Civ 2 is still a more interesting game to me than civ 3 and civ 4 combined
can't get enough of the world war 2 scenario
Great but buggy

Teriffic game, but inital release was very buggy, lots of problems with video cards, esp. raedon. Largest scenarios essentially unplayable, even with a computer with massive resources. Patch out last week in November (supposedly) will correct memory leaks and video driver issues.
Even so, its a teriffic game, easily the best of the Civ series. Just read the "read me" file carefully, and avoid theHuge(or even large) maps and youre in for a treat.

This is a wonderful evolution of my favorite game series of all time. The graphics are beautiful. The music is beautiful. Most importantly, the gameplay is beautiful. I cannot stop playing this challenging game. My wife is already casting the stink-eye in my direction for playing so much. The changes to rules and gameplay are logical and in response to the many comments and outcries of Civ gamers who have put Civ 1-3 to the test. Diplomacy is more natural and realistic. No more does every nation on the globe suddenly attack for no apparent reason. There is a system that makes sense now. Overall, this game is just incredibly great.
Why do I withhold the 5th star overall? The game is demanding of your system. You will need to ensure you have the latest video drivers, minimum 1GB of RAM, minimum 64MB video memory (I have an Nvidia Geforce Go 5200 w/64MB RAM, and I can play the game, but I certainly wish I had 128MB. With 64MB video is a little jerky but playable. Before I updated my video driver with an Omega driver the game tended to crash or lock up. It's fine now.)
Have you enjoyed previous versions of Civilization? If so, you must get this one. But first, you might want to buy some flowers for your significant other and apologize in advance for the impending neglect of your relationship. This is the most addictive game in history.
Where are the up dates???

The first two thousand years sing- and the song for Turn Based players is sweet...however the end game leads to continued crashes- (and I have a 3k cherry gaming system) WTF? All in all a must buy for the Civ fan- but I hope there's a new mod page and/or some add on's coming which alieviate these problems.
