Great game, but AOM is even better!

I'm revising my original review where I originally gave this game 3 stars. After reading more about strategy and tactics I discovered that this game is much more fun than I gave it credit for. I realized that my own shortcomings were to blame and not the game. An excellent and fun addictive game that I recommend. This was my original review:

I only gave this 3 stars because it turns out I don't like real-time games as much as turn-based games. If you're like me and you don't like real-time games where everything moves super fast and you don't really have too much time to plan things out, then you won't like this that much, because you need to be quick on your feet! But if you like that kind of thing, then you'll love this. Hope this helps. If you prefer turn-based, try Civilization III (have a fast computer!) or my personal favorite Call to Power II (some people don't like this one as much, but I love it!)

A rush to play....

If you love history, and you love strategy, and you love it happening all in real-time, you'll certainly enjoy this time-sucker. And I DO MEAN time sucker! Especially when you and your opponent(s) can resource and defend their economy well, even after several waves of attacks. Talk about dancing!

My only complaint on the game and genre, as a whole, is that it soon becomes a game of "whoever can level up the quickest and get to the next Age" usually wins. In this instance, I suddenly long for turn based games like Advanced Wars, or even Chess, where time is allowed for thought-out, planned-out strategy. But this is just personal preference, and should be taken as such. (Maybe I SHOULD enjoy those turned-based games more often before playing this to counter-balance my likings and dislikings...hmmm.)

The bottom line advice- buy this game as an educational device as well as for something that will be truly enjoyed by the real-time strategy fan. And I recommend buying the "Age of Empires II: Gold Edition" where you get the game and its expansion pack for nineteen dollars and ninety-five cents. Don't just get Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. You'd be cheating yourself out of bug fixes and game balance tweaks, as well as new civiliations and other small but truly worthwhile goodies.

Great Strategy

Great Storyline, Great Visuals, Great gameplay. The AI is fairly smart and pretty ruthless. The expansion pack is good too, but the units of the new and the old sometimes don't mesh very well- Mounted Conquistadors with Guns can generally slaughter basic tribal archers.

fun

The one player mode in this game is a little more fun that the starcraft, warcraft, red alert one player modes. Internet multiplayer is great. The game is deep enough to be fun and challenging, and easy enough to get good at quickly. Buy it!!

Yes, AOE2 does deliver your need for strategy games, but....

Start with villagers, some resources, a town center and build up you little outpost into a great center of trade, diplomacy, and a place where enemies, who want what you have, are going to destroy you! this is what Age of Empires 2 is all about. you start from scratch, with just some mere villagers. you gather up resources to build an army to conqueror and defend. its really like all real-time strategy games. however, unlike some of its counter-parts (ahem... cough starcraft warcraft cough) it has a lot of the same buildings and lots of the same core units. in warcraft and starcraft, every race has different resources gatherers whereas in Age of empires2, you always have the same villager. in AOE2, the only differences between races would be unique units, and unit/tech trees. each race has their own econonic boosts and disadvantages. the unit/tech tree that i am talking about is that each race can make a certain unit and research a certain technology that another race cannot. for example: the chinese can build bombard towers, but the celts cannot. the chinese can build Camels, while the celts cannot. however, celts can research much stronger infantry technology, including weapons and armor advancements, while the chinese cannot. overall, you will have lots of fun playing this game no matter if you have played both starcraft and warcraft previously.

Caesar III is way better

The problem with this game is that there is no room for artistry. You put up the same buildings, usually in the same order, and it doesn't much matter where. Games like "Civilization" have wonderful movies (showing, say, the blasting of a Titan rocket or the building of the pyramids) and require a great deal of strategy. Games like "Caesar III" allow you to feel as if you are actually presiding over a Roman City. Indeed, as you build your city, you have to balance every aspect of Roman life, from water resources to the worshipping of Gods. However, Age of Kings enjoys none of these dimensions. I have found that the one-player version (that I play)is simply more frustrating than fun. The messages from other kingdoms flash too quickly on the screen, the demands are outrageous, and then you get invaded by all three other kingdoms at once. And, unlike Caesar III, the stockpiling of resources in Age of Kings is simply dull.

The best Real Time Strategy Game I have Ever Played

I love Age of Empires II. It is easliy one of the greatest RTS's in gaming history. Every review I myself have read of this game had said it was incredable. I agree completly. A faboulous game, I recomend fans of the first Age of Empires to buy this right away, and get the expansion too. There are no words to describe how awesome this game is.

Some Details on the Game:
The greatest part about this game is what they added. There are now many more units, buildings, and technologies than in the last game. The finer additions to AOE II are the unique units, castles, and gates. Each civilization has a special unit that is actually a unit that exsited in that civilization. Take the Briton's logbowmen for example. The logbow archers were the elite archers in the army of england during that time period. The English were feared during the middle ages for the masses of longbow archers. An the Mongolian's spcial horse archers. The lightly armored horse archers was an innovative tactic actually used by Ghengis Kahn. He used it to conquer most of Eurpoe and Asia. So there is a lot of historical base to the game.

The addition of other units and gates has improved the game tremendously. Gates have made a full defense system possible and has change the way you have to win. no more charging with hordes of soldiers on an un-protectable town. Also, large amounts of catapults can no longer win you the game. The new ongers (as they are called) are defensless agains all but the slowest troops and must be guarded.

The gameplay is very simple and is almost exactly like AOE I. For new players, I suggest reading the manual, but you won't have any trouble figuring it out after that. But don't think this game is easy. The phrase "Practice makes perfect" really applys to this game. You develop winning strategies and a favorite civilization over time, but to get there you actually have to play the game. The campagins aren't great, but are still pretty fun. Regular matches are the best though. You can even play online against other players.

This game is an absolute must-have for all RTS fans. And even if you're just looking for a fun game, this is a good one for you too.

Age of Empires is better than other simulation games.

Age of Empires is better than other simulation games. Age of Empires 2 Age of the Kings has many features. You can play a Random game which allows you to chose how many players, who is your enemy, what color represents your empire, and what kind of land you want. In a Regicide, you do the same except have to [do away with] the king of the enemy empire to win. AOE Age of the Kings has the best campaigns like the William Wallace Campaign. In the History page you can find out the history from the Britons to the Vikings. Age of Empires represents a strong game. Only if a 3rd version would be made. If you have the game or thinking about buying it here are some cheat codes that may help you:

Before typing in the code click ENTER on your keyboard and then type it in

Cheese Steak Jimmy's- 1000 food
Robin Hood- 1,000 gold
rock on- 1,000 stone
lumberjack- 1,000 wood
aegis- Build buildings fast
how do you turn this on (must be spaced& not capitalized)- Cobra car that shoots
to smitthereens- a sabotuer that explodes

Hope you like the game! I like it so much I play it practically every day.

A fun and educational game!

Age of Empires II is a fun game, as well as educational. It's a lot like Pharaoh and Caesar III. You take control of different armies and conquerers, such as Ghengis Khan or Barbarossa. Though it may be difficult controlling huge armies at one time, you get use to it. Age of Empires II also has a different control interface that you need to get used to: left-click selects, right-click commands. Taunts are added to this game; they are mostly for fun. Some taunts are: "Raiding party!", "Nice town; I'll take it.", and "It is good to be the king." Overall, Age of Empires II is a great game. I recommend it to strategy game- lovers who are quick with their mouse.
