Computer crasher

The first Age of Empires was great. The second one just plain sucked. Sure it has good graphics and an easy to use interface, but the game would always crash both of my computers. You can only play in 800x600 or above which is a downside also. My computers are not old either, one is a 300p-2 160megs ram 17 inch monitor, voodoo3 etc. The other is a 450 amd k6-2 96 megs ram, Ati graphics, 15 inch monitor. I just wanted to put this warning out to those who will be purchasing it. It may work fine for you, but I had problems. It sure is not addictive as the first AOE. Buggy software! Blahh! I am not anti Microsoft by the way.

Age of Kings is a good game, but NOT as good as age of empires and rise of rome. If you're going to buy this, buy the first one. The gaming experience is much better as a whole if you master both!

A game for everybody!

This review is really directed for those of us who consider themsleves casual gamers. Like many people, I find my time soaked up by a variety of responsibilities. As such, we may only get a few hours every so often to play a favorite computer game. If you should find yourself in this category, you should most definately consider this series (pick up the expansion pack--well worth the money). The game is easily learned but challenging to master. If your time is precious, it is relatively easy to return to a scenario or campaign without having to review what you have done in the past to remind yourself what you were trying to accomplish (e.g. as in a complex role-playing game). That being said, the game is fantastic fun and a learning experience as well. It is simply the most addicting game that I have yet played. The concept of starting a civilization from scratch and building an army to conquer your foes or establishing trade routes has proved to be an absorbing experience. If you are looking to have only a few games on your shelf, this game and the expansion pack should be on the short list.

This is a real game. If you ever get tired of a game because it's always the same thing over and over. Well finally you have a game that never repeats itself. The random map games are never the same because they generated every time you click go. Plus there are several different ways to mix the game up and make real easy or real difficult. Trust me you will be playing this game untill your computer overheats.

Onward to Adventure!

What would have happened if the Mongols under Genghis Khan faced Alexander the Great, both at their peak strength? Or, what would have happened to the English if they invaded Turkey at the height of the Ottoman Empire? If you play this game, you will learn and learn and learn again. History isn't fixed. The same armies can win or loss, depending on their commander.

Age of Empire II is a real time game which continues and improves on the original. Thirteen societies with different strengths and weaknesses compete for dominance of the world. Victory can be achieved in three of the four ways found in the older version - genocide, construction and holding of a "wonder of the world" or capturing all the world's religious artifacts.

The key to any victory will be to exploit your enemies' weaknesses while capitalizing on your strengths. The English archers can fire further and faster, the Turks have gunpowder which is devastating at close range. The Vikings have stronger ships and the "Bezerkers" who heal on their own. This is one game where you really should read the instruction book.

The pluses to this game, and there are many, include, (1) new army formations (which I rarely use) (2) new buildings including the "castle" where you can make a special unit unique to your society (3) and an adjustment to the "hit points" of the earlier units. Gone are the days when you can send one calvary to a new society and wipe it out. Now they will flee to the town center and shoot you down from relative safety.

There are, of course, some negative things. My pet peeve is that as the game progresses you citizens seem to get dumber. They will stand next to your men who are being killed and do nothing, waiting for their turn to be slaughtered. A better program would allow them to fight or flee automatically at the sign of enemies. I also despise the diplomacy (read bribery) options. Pay or die is how this game works. You need to pay off your enemies, or they will destroy you. I think this could be better designed. As it is all the computer armies attack me right away without mercy. I kill them of course. But it would be nice if they didn't focus on me first, every game.

Still, all in all, this game is fun! I have played for many hours and, except for Civilization, this has been my most used computer program. Fun, fun to play and, right now, its price has been reduced, so there isn't much to pay. Enjoy it and have fun.

The best there is, a credit to the genre

Amazing, from everything from the play balance to the graphics an unbelievable sequel to an already good game. Go out and buy this game.

Highs: Inspirational AI; Amazing models; Great graphics; Tops the original; Nice extra features; good multiplayer.

Lows: Some monotony in the later campaigns.

Final verdict: 96%

Bottom Line: Go buy this game right now.

I'm bad at most games. I mean that I'm not as good as most of the people that I've played with on-line; with the exception of sports games. I was really leary of buying this game because I'd never played one of this ilk before, and the term "turn based game" didn't sound all that great to me. Of course, I have come to find out that this isn't a turn based game. When I first played AOK I was terrible (even on easiest setting.) But now, with a little practice, I'm actually pretty good at it. Not great (yet) but pretty good. If you are just getting involved with "Strategy" games I would highly recommend this title. It's just plain fun. I put the game on the "slow" setting so that I can experience all the graphics and sounds that it has to offer. this also helps in situations where you're not ready for an attack and you need time to think. Anyway, that's my two cents. This is the best game that I've ever played!

Age2 Aok is Great! GET THIS GAME

I must say that this game is the best game I have ever played. I bought this game a year ago and I have been getting better and better ever since. For those of you who dont know, Age of Empires 2: Age of kings is a game where you choose from 13 diffrent ancient civilizations( Teutons, Celts, Byzantines, Persians, etc) and build a Powerful Empire, then you destroy other players empires. The diffrent civilizations have almost completely diffrent technologies so it is impossible to get bored. The best part of AOK is multiplayer. I have made so many friends and have had so much fun. The most popular types of play online are Random Map (RM) and Deathmatch (DM). Random Map is where you start with a limited supply of resources in a dark time or the Dark Ages and work your way up. Death Match is where you start in the Post-Imperial Age with a huge supply of resources and basically get straight to the battle. Of course there are Scenerios, and Regicide but those arent as popular. Another fun aspect of online play is the rating system. With this sytem you can see how you rank up to other players. In conclusion I would like to say one thing, BUY THIS GAME! YOU WONT REGRET IT!

Wonderful game with a major flaw

When I first got this game, I loved it. I played it over and over. Soon, I wanted to play online- I figured, with some allies, I was good enough. But, Zone.com would somehow not work. I ran into hundreds of problems. It said AoE was not installed, or that the program could not be launched, or a number of other things. I got frustrated and went back to single player. However, eventually, I tired of playing the computer. But, I couldn't get zone.com to work, so I stopped playing.

I finally picked it up again and tried zone.com. It took me hours, but eventually I overcame each problem until a giant barrier stoof in my way. FIREWALL! After 3 days I got the ports to open.
This is a wonderful game in which you control a civilization to victory by conquering another civi's city. It is different every time you play. I HIGHLY reccommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the Command and Conquer series.
