I have played Age of Empires and Rise of Rome, but this by far is the best of the three. You have a lot more control over your villagers and military units and you can even garison units inside of buildings. The town center has a feature that if you are attacked you can signal all of your villagers to go hide inside of buildings. The castles have a lot of great features too. I have a pentium 350 megahertz computer and I haven't had any problems with the speed at all. The buildings definately aren't too big because in this game they are very well proportioned. This is definately among the three best computer games that I have ever played!
Best Strategy Game Going Right Now!

This is the best strategy game available at present. It is better than Comand and Conquer, Red Alert, Starcraft, Warcraft, or Age of Empires. And you can play it on on-line like these other great games.
Things I liked:
Multi-unit production: Click 15 times on a unit production icon and go do something else while they are produced. Set rally points for the troops or unit to go to when produced. Pick a rally point in a forest for workers and they will start cutting wood.
My favorite scenarios are multi-player sea battles. The ships are powerful and useful. Defenses like fences and stone walls can protect your island leaving you more latitude for marauding against your opponents. Fireships increase difficulty. Wow, it is awesome.
When playing against the computer I find the sea battle gives you breathing room to build your forces. Otherwise you are likely to get overrun before you get started.
One fun thing to do is play teams against the computer. This is useful if you have a friend that is not up to speed and not a worthy opponent. My brother and I play against 3 or more computer opponents. So one could drop out for a while to answer the phone while the game keeps rolling.
I like to save interesting games and replay challenging situations or games with unusual maps.
Try putting a bunch of units in a fortress for protection from ships and then surprise your opponents when they land thinking you are out of land units. Guess what--they heal in there too!
I found that setting the game for high resources, and a population of 200 would sometimes bog down the network, so I upgraded my network hub and network cards to 100BaseT and now I can get some really huge multi-player games going.
This is the best game I've ever play with 4 or more players.
The game is great. Have fun.
Will please newcomers and old AOE fans, too.

In a nutshell: A Good buy. A Great game. All the new features are wonderful and the game balance has become extremely good. The graphics are stunning and the multiplayer is awsome. The units are also great. Several new features add new depth to the gameplay. However, there are a few shortcomings. These are from a old Age of Empires 1 addict's point of view. First of all, the gameplay is very balanced. This means no rushing, at all. Rushing is close to impossible. Only a diverse army can win. No more cav rushes, sorry! Second of all, the priest thing has gone too far. I hate them. I wish i could turn them off. They are by far the most annoying things in the game. Microsoft messed up when they chose to put them in. Other wise, the game is great. Microsoft is obviously trying to target unexperienced Age of Empires players, as well as new players. However, there are advanced options that can be enabled which give you more controll over your units. Overall, worth the $$.
Great and VERY relaxing!

This is the kind of game that you must play when you're stressed. Just pick up your favourite civilization and ravage your enemies' towns! Some people wrote that you need more than 100 Mb of memory... It's false. I play it on my good ol' PC with 64 Mb of memory and runs pretty smooth. If you love strategy games, do not think it twice. Buy it right now!
The only mistake is the buildings from Middle East. The byzantines did not have those type of mills! Also, they do not have any mosques. They were Christians! Those are the only mistakes.
Simply Amazing

AOE2 is simply amazing...I've never played AOE1 so I can't make any comparisons, but look--AOE2 beats out much of the great RTS games (including my favorite game Starcraft) by including 13 civilizations with infantry, cavalry, archery, naval units, siege weapons... and all kinds of defense measures, including all-mighty castles and bombard towers. The diversity of units might be less than some widely popular games, but you can understand and feel every single part of this game. Upgrades from Cavaliers to Paladins and Archers to Crossbowmen make sense--they aren't just words from nowhere. And if you're looking for a great campaign game, this is it--there are carefully made videos and sounds (just as starcraft) for the campaigns, and I especially enjoy the diversity of these one player missions. The 1st Mongolian mission was very interesting, requiring you to befriend the different tribes by bringing them sheep, killing the wolf pack, founding the sacred relic, etc. I also liked how this game handled commerce. There are a variety of types of resources (gold, stone, food, and wood to be precise) and you can build trading carts to earn gold by trading with other players, pay tribute, etc. etc. This game is simply a must-buy...it's worth every penny.
well balanced master piece

Most stradegy games that i've played have just a little economy and alot of milatary. This game has alot more economy than most, i think this make s it better. But its balancied becuase it has alot of milatary too. This game is worth the money. The AI is much improved over AoE. I do think that single player is to hard sometimes, but that makes you think more, after all what is a stradegy game for.
It has a minor bug though (i hope they release a patch soon), when you put it on easiest mode with 150+ the comp. will resign after 5 minutes.

This game is extraordinary! Beautifully rendered 3d graphics(for a game with the same overhead view as C&C: Red alert)and awesome AI make it even better! Unlike the first Age of empires, Your soldiers are now more likely to join a nearby battle the stand around like idiots. You can Even assign formations to your soldiers like flanking, where they split into to groups a few hundred feet apart. Or staggered which is pretty much self-explanatory. There are some cons though. There are some slight AI issues over the water and you can't assaign formations to your navy. You also have a population limit. Hopefully someone will release a patch that gets rid of that. You can choose from one fo 13 civilizations. they are: Franks, Goths, Britons, Celts, Chinese, Japanese, Mongols, Vikings, Tuetons, Searacens, Persians, and two others but their names elude me. You can select your map of choice and how many enemies and allies you want on your team or against you. The battles are brutal but fun to watch. It's like watching braveheart all over again. There are several modes of play to choose from including Deathmatch, Regicide, Conquest, Time, and a few more. The gamelay is great. But to enjoy it to its fullest you should have at least A Voodoo 3 2000 PCI, But its beautiful on a Pentium 2 with 300 mhz and a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP at the 1024 setting. This game has tons of replayability All in all this game is a worthy buy. I reccomend it for anyone who wants a break from all other Stratedgy games.

Microsoft has really outdone themselves this time. I've been an Age Of Empires fanatic for a long time. When I heard AOE II, Age of Kings, was coming out, I had to get it. When I popped the CD and started a game I was overwhelmed. I took so much time analyzing the new and improved features I forgot I had opponents and was deimated in the first few minutes. But that's not the point. First off, they have male and female villagers now. Another great feature is the better balancing of the civs. Each has a unique unit that corresponds to that civ's history. I also love how each civilization talks in their language. And the multiplayer features are a breath of clean air. The Zone is a great place to play, and the modem connection is better than ever. Overall, this game is great, so if you're a RTS player, this game's for you.
The best strategy game out now.

AOE2 melds gameplay and strategy in a way no other game like it has been able to. The days of 2D isometric gaming are far from over, the visuals in AOE2 are amazing and beautiful. This is a game anyone can pick up and play, with a very good tutorial, you'll pick up the controls quickly and then begin really playing to increase your strategies. Overall this game is great and with the upcoming expansion pack, AOE2 looks to keep up the great gameplay.
Quick, but missing some of the magic

Personally, I am a HUGE fan of the Civilization type games. I was looking online and found, however, that the ratings for "Call To Power 2" were not so high. I was looking for a game somewhere up to the level of the old Civilization II, and when in the computer store, I was recommended "Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings". I bought it, and was not unhappy. It IS a very good game, and it goes quick enough to not get bored. Things happen without having to sit around and wait (or cheat) for them to happen. The villagers even have funny voices, and they make sounds when you click on them. I listed some of my own personal thoughts on Pros vs. Cons below.
Pros:
1. Great graphics for a strategy game--very up close to the action.
2. Goes quickly
3. There are various ways of winning, not just by destroying the enemy. (Although if you are the bloodshed-loving type, have no fear...it's still an option)
4. You can fight battles from the standpoint of famous leaders, such as Joan of Arc.
5. It's easy to build structures if you have villagers, and it is quite easy to move from Age to Age.
6. Many options to enhance gameplay
Cons:
1. There should be more ages to make it more interesting, and for that matter more civilizations.
2. Though it is shorter than say Civilization I and II, gameplay is not quite as engaging. There are more options in the previously mentioned games.
So overall, I feel that the pros outweigh the cons, and this is a very good game. Even for those of you who don't enjoy strategy games very much, I believe you will get a kick out of this one. It's worth what you need to pay for it. These kind of games are a dime a dozen, but this one certainly stands out in the crowd.
