Awesome game

This is one of my favorite computer games around. The graphics are great, and the gameplay is terrific. I love all the different empires you can control, everything from British to Chinese. The strategy is much the same as the first installment of Age of Empires, but if it ain't broke don't fix it. Lots of fun with this one.

Fun but to hard to enjoy

This is a great game but I found it so hard that it became boring. I always lose on moderate. It's terrible.

It is fun...

It is fun, and the campaigns are ok and it is really good with some friends to play multi-player, but it gets boring.

Complex but flawed

Generally, I enjoy complex civilisation simulations, but this one didn't really impress me. The battle AI wasn't too bad compared to some strategy games, but the real-time aspect of it meant too often your own soldiers (or peasants) tended to wander off on their own (usually getting themselves killed in the process). Once soldiers are deployed, there's no easy way to recall them, especially if they're scattered all over the civilisation--I generally had to resort to highlighting each one and giving him a rallying point far behind the lines (I've heard that the upgrade fixes some of this, but I haven't tried it). This was hampered by the relatively small viewing window (if the designers had gone with less-detailed units and had the "camera" view a larger map area, players could do a lot more). The technology tree was fantastic, but unfortunately there didn't seem to be that much differentiation in buildings/technologies between civilisations (one European hovel looks very much like another, etc). The campaigns were well-constructed and challenging, and overall you can successfully kill a few afternoons playing this, but I got tired of it relatively quickly. However, with the design improvements I've been hearing about, I'll be interested to play Age of Mythology when it's released.

really I dont like this game....fun if you are peaceful!

I've been playing this game for a while. It's OK, but not the most fun game I've ever played, or even the most fun RTS game I've ever played (that's still Total Annihilation).

The graphics are incredibly beautiful, and the sound is nice. The voices of each units aren't as entertaining as, say, Starcraft, but they're well done in several foreign languages. There's a lot of small nice touches which really add to the game.

Unfortunately, it suffers in several areas. It requires a little too much micromanagement for my taste. For example, you must actively tell villagers to replant their farms once the field is exhausted. It's quite frustrating to finish directing a major battle, only to return to your village and find that the fields have lain fallow just because the farmers didn't replant. The tactical options were a good idea, but not implemented well. They're nearly useless. Directing your units in battle is far more difficult than it should be.

If you want lots of eye candy, this is the game for you. If a focus on tactics or even overall strategy is your thing, then it's not. These failings aren't specific to AOE2, they're endemic to most RTS games. But for such a heralded addition to the genre, it really should stand far above the rest. As it is, it's merely a pretty good game, leaving you with a taste of what could have been.

Just a cheqp Starcraft imitation

This is just like Starcraft except it's not nearly as good....if you like Starcraft this is a big dissapointment compared to it.

A Poor Sequel

I bought this game because I really like the first one. This one doesn't compare. The maps are darker, the movement stilted and clumsy. There are some good additions to game play, but the scenes and population are inferior IN USE, if not to the eye. I was really disappointed.

I thought this game needed a lot of work

This game seemed rushed. I couldn't figure why the producers would put it out so soon if they weren't finished with it. However, the graphics are good.

Probably should be in the hall of fame...

Age of Empires is the best game I have ever played. First of all, it's very wide ranged. I'm in seventh grade, and my thirdgrade brother is as good, if not better at it than i am. its true that it takes a while to learn, but not a terribly long time. if you're a stratagy maniac, and you don't have this game, you are missing a vital piece of your collection.
