This game is truly excellent and just falls short of a classic. It depicts the rise of various civilizations and the wars they go through. The graphics are excellent, the variety of units is excellent, and each civ actually provides a different feel and can cause a different playstyle to the game. The only downfall is slightly weak AI, with many of the enemy's men not grouping into formations and my own occassionally wandering off to attack houses while the enemy's Teutonic knights kill them. Other than that, this game is funa nd worthwhile to purchase.

This game is a very good strategy game based on real world history.the graphics are spectacular and the computer controled charachters are realistic. I give my rating of 4 stars because the program had certain conflicts with my system.Do not let my rating make you think that this is not a must have game. If you must know, it is a "MUST HAVE" game. This is an exellent game and I would recommend it to any strategy lover.

Age of Empires is a very, very good game. There are realistic settings, and you can even play a historical event, with your own civilizations. You don't have to have to participate in wars, though. You can create your own maps, and set your villagers to work! There is also a very nice 5-part tutorial, which teaches you how to do almost evrything in the game. But, some things you have to learn on your own. The tutorial helped me a lot when I first bought the game. When you start a civilization, you can choose the culture of your people(EX: Turks, Japanese, Goths...) and your team color, which is what color the clothes of your people are. As your civilization build, you can upgrade to different ages, which will allow you better technology. You can also upgrade things in the buildings, from things as important as making your soldiers stronger, to things as simple as making monks and villagers walk faster. I can't wait to buy the expansion pack/new game, Age of Empires: Age of Mythology.
Why is this so hard?

You know you're in trouble when the first scenario after the tutorial pits you against three foes. If you've played a RTS before it's not that bad but if you're new to the genre it's the deep end of the pool. True, I'm more of a explore and build player but I was still disappointed with the difficulty of the campaigns. If a game wants to be difficult I'd prefer it be with good AI, not swamping you with an early rush or overwhelming numbers. There is a simple formula to win most scenarios: survive the early rush, create a defense and assault the computer opponents one at a time, and you'll win.
There are good things here, a lot of them. Huge maps and tech tree, updated graphics and well-balanced 'rock-paper-scissors' units. I also think the random scenario generator is great for a couple hours of play.
If you're new to real-time strategy it isn't the place to start. If you want to David vs. Goliath, this game is for you.
Cool Game if you like RTS games

AOE2 is one of the best on its genre, still is so damn popular on the multizone, no matter if you play the solo missions or the standard games you will get a thrill. As always it's an excellent companion to many of our "lonely nights". Maybe the only thing is on the multiplayer option which is sometimes a little bit complicated. Anyway, this game is a must for your collection.
It's just an ok game

I have been a real fan of turn based video games (civilization, civ2). I wanted to try a real time strategy game and this one is ok. The one thing I really don't like is that you just build the same things in every scenario, and there is not that much to build. It's an average game.

At first the game was great I had lots of fun. But then, the computer players in every game I played started to surender. I put it on the hardest level and was the weakest civilization possible, and they still surendered. It takes about two minutes, by that time im still in the feudal age. Now I don't play the game anymore.
Magnificent, beautiful!!

This game is MAGNIFICENT. The games pro outweight the con soooo much that I want to give it a hundred stars. I also recommand this with its expansion: The conquerers, because in solve many problems, such as micromanaging villagers.
PRO:
Tatic: There are a lot of tatic involve in AoK(ex: rushing, booming, castle rush) and you also require to plan and capture important location such as chokepoint and gold mine(nearly all strong units require gold). You also need to know each units strength and weakness(knight is weak against pikeman and camel, but strong against infantry, seige unit, other weaker calvery, archers). Sending your entire army loose in enemy base usually is unwise if your opponent is very skilled and know your weakness. Also, in early stages, EVERY seconds counts. If you are delayed even by one minutes, the consequences may be terrible.
A.I. : Computer's A.I. can be very har, but it can also be very easy. If you are on the easy level, your computer opponent will rarely attack(or not attack at all) and will not research any tech.
If you are on the standards level, computer will attack late in the game when you usually have enough units to crush the attack.(the attack usually consis of some cheap infantry/calvery with one or two seige unit.)computer only research important tech, such as chemistry.
On moderate level, the computer no longer letting you slap their faces(or screen). They advance through the ages rapidly(ten minutes adverage, I once see a chinese advance in seven minutes). They normally launch attack during about 16th minutes, which consist of many knights, infantry, archers, and seige units(early is rams, and later is cannons and trebuchets). They also build mass navy and shore bombard your town/city if you are not prepared. The computer also research many tech, such as armors and attack points.
I won't explain more because I hope you got the idea. Personally I can beat 5 computer opponents in standards, 2 in moderate, and (rarely)1 in hard(without cheat)
Senario: you also can be Joan of Art, Saladin, and more historic figure and help them accomplish many things.
ART: The art in AoK is stunning, and the building size is also reasonable. The unit animation is believable(especially trebuchets)
I could add a lot more than those things list above
CON:
Micromanagement- You need to tell your villagers to replant farms, chop trees, mine golds after the mining camp is complete. Most of those things was solve in the conquerer expansion(there are farm quenes, smarter villagers, and more)
Are you a strategy gamer? Do you like Star Craft/War Craft? If you are looking for a new game to get adictive, PUT THIS IN YOUR SHOPPING CART RIGHT NOW!!
P.S. : like starcraft, there are also multiplayer settings.

The mother of all good games has given birth to yet another beautifully done game.
AOEII is what one could call the prime example of its genre. Most RTS's force you to ... your oppenent with bigger guns, but in AOEII that is not the case. Military is simply a defense, and in times of need, an army for war. The various paths and civilizations make you all warm and comfy.
The first thing you are greeted with is a beautiful cinematic from yours truly, Microsoft Games. Then there's the multitude of campaigns, all of which were done excellently. The engine is a truly refined version of ye old AOEI. Formations for your men (and women) is a great new thing that adds some strategy to your game, and the new game options are just terrific.
My true favorite is Regicide, in which each player has a King character and the last one standing wins. Sometimes when others destroy my entire civilization I like to hide my King in the forests, just for time.
AOEII is definetely an enjoyable game, instead of wasting $20 on Starcraft, spend it on this better game.

The Age of Empires series is one of my favorite games. I play it all the time even though it came out awhile ago. I like playing civilization games and this is the best.
