First of all I give this collection five stars in the FUN rating because I love Age of Empires, I have since I started using a computer way back in '97. My two star rating goes for this collection because I haven't been able to get it to play yet on my High End machine.

High End Users beware of this one. If you've got XP, you'll likely run into the same problem I've had. "Cannot initialize graphics" error. I've done what they've suggested in the FAQ and on the Microsoft Support, but no go so far. It says to reset the display resolution to 800x600 and set compatability to 256 color mode, but so far no luck for some reason. I'm runnig a Radeon 9800 on an Athlon 2600+ and XPPro SP2.

The game is great, but keep these problems in mind. It says XP on the box too, but don't be too hopeful that it will work on the first try, you may have to do some tweaking to get it to work at all if you're on a high-end PC. Just keep that in mind and be smart, it's a great deal for only ten bucks, but I would have thought they would have been able to put a fix in for this by now.

So the good: Great games on three discs for an unbeatable price.
Now the bad: Expect problems running on high-end machines.

Hope this has helped and just be aware of this issue.

I've always loved AOE and for good reason!! This game is fun!

And for those of you who are wondering if this works on Vista, yes it does. I didn't have any compatibility issues at all on my machine.

Well, at least the Age of Kings game works...

You all should know about the game play of these games from other reviews. I'll focus just on this package.

I bought this for the Age of Kings and the AOK expansion pack -- I already have the Age of Empires: Gold Edition. So, it shouldn't matter that the version of AOE doesn't load on my computer (it freezes just as the load is about finished). I mean, I did get an AOK: Gold for a good price. But, I'm kind of sorry all the games included don't work.

Good game, but not for windows vista.

This game is really good, but make sure you have a windows xp computer. Only one out of the three games works on windows vista.

Don't assume that more is better

Honestly, I believe that this packaging was made for parents who've heard their kids say the words "I want AGE OF EMPIRES", and who, unfamiliar with the series, will think that more is better.

Truth is, once you play AOE II and its expansion pack, "The Conquerors", you'll stick with that version. The original AOE (and its "Rise of Rome" expansion pack) will just gather dust. It's not that AOE and "Rise of Rome" are bad games. Obviously, they're great games--which is why AOE was one of the highest-selling PC games ever. But the improvements made in AOE II and "The Conquerors" mean that game is simply more fun. Make no mistake: it's no bargain that you're getting AOE and "The Rise of Rome" along with AOE II. These are units Microsoft simply couldn't sell after AOE II came out.

Still, it's possible this double-pack is priced right. The list price of this Collector's Edition is exactly the same as the list on AOE II and "The Conquerors" combined. Essentially, Microsoft is throwing the two older titles in for free. However, Microsoft very frequently offers rebates when buying any of these titles separately. As far as I know, this Collectors Edition offers no such rebate. I'd therefore highly recommend that you see whether any rebate promotions are currently being offered by Microsoft before buying this Collector's Edition. If there aren't any, go ahead and get this Collector's Edition. But if there's a rebate, you really are better off buying just AOE II and "The Conquerors" separately--and putting the rebate in the bank.

The collector's edition is not very useful. You'll probably only play Age of Empires II: The Conquerors. Age of Empires: Rise of Rome and Age of Empires will probably not even be played. Just buy Age of Empires:The Conquerors, and don't buy the first two versions.

Good strategy PC game- In the PS and x-box era....

I like Age Of Empires PC game a lot cause this is the only best game that allows you play strategy game on a PC and still can learn a little bit of history(just kidding).....I have spend a lot of time (I should say lot of my life).

It is really good on a big/fast processor..with a good video card...

I rarely buy PC games, but this one is definitely worth a look. The first one is generally regarded as one of the best PC games of all time, and the second one is even better. Plus, it is insanely cheap, if you don't already have it, buy it.
