Death To Spies Is Clunky & A Visual Mess

When I got the game I immediately started feeling like this was going to be a bad experience, mainly because the game is called Death To Spies. Then after the long installation process I proceeded to play. The opening intro grabbed my attention. The cutscene had some nice lighting and environmental design, but I felt like the characters looked cartoony. Then I played the game's opening training mission.
After I got used to the clunky controls I became frustrated just trying to get my guy to move. Jumping over obstacles was ridiculous, shooting was harder then ever. The mouse controls are awful and I have a Logitech MX Laser Mouse. The character design is horrendous and the graphics overall look like oatmeal. The colors are all drab and dull and nothing looks vivid or jumps off the screen. I played the game for no more than 30 minutes and couldn't take it anymore. Stay away.
Complete and total mess

Where to start with this game. Death to Spies could have been a good game, but it fails in every area except for the original idea.
Your character is assigned to counter intelligence missions within the Soviet Union during WW II. You're tasked to assassinate or kidnap German agents and generals, steal or photograph blueprints and plans and other counter intelligence related missions. Unfortunately, the idea for this game is about the only good part of it.
The installation process is quite easy and straight forward in my opinion. It states that the game is compatible with Windows XP, but it did not run very well at all on my machine and it has more RAM and a better video card than the recommended system specs.
Once you get the game installed, it all goes downhill. The training mission is outright ripped off from another Atari game for the PS2. Getting your character pointed in the right direction and moving properly is a chore and I've got an optical mouse that has no problems with other games. Once you complete the simple tasks of running over boards and climbing a latter, you get to learn weapons. You're stuck in a third person mode and aiming is a disaster. Even with a good mouse and turning down the sensitivity in the game options the aiming reticle jumps all around the screen. I finally gave up on the training mission and went into the first mission of the campaign. This is where the problems with aiming are at their worst. No matter what I did to aim at certain soldiers I wanted to kill in order to steal their uniform, I never could hit them for some unknown reason. Also the graphics were VERY clunky. Instead of simply taking steps, the enemies would basically "glide" all over the screen and were suddenly on top of me. But then they didn't stand there and shoot at me, they glided on past only to somehow locate me again and shoot from behind after looking for me for a couple minutes even though I was right out there in the open. Nothing could fix this game, even after I turned down the graphics to their lowest setting. At that point I quit. I simply could not stand this game any longer.
Stay FAR away from this game. It's a glitchy, horrible mess.
This game is torture... and not in a good way.

I didn't have high expectations for this game to begin with, but I did not expect it to be this bad. This game is like a horrible throw-back from the 90's with bad graphics, awkward controls, and lame movie clips. Even the training sessions that you start out with were so boring that I literally had to force myself through them. The idea behind the game isn't bad, but the way it is implemented is.
I found it very hard to "keep playing" this game... let alone try to enjoy it. I know I'm being pretty harsh, but I really think they could have spent a great deal more time polishing it up.
Pros:
-Lots of weapons to choose from... even from the very beginning.
-Decent sound effects including ambient noise like birds chirping.
Cons:
-Bad Graphics, Bad controls, Bad Clips, Bad overall design.
-Very little fun factor.
-Difficult to play... even on easy mode.
Conclusion: I won't be playing this game again. I wouldn't wish this game upon my worst enemy... it is THAT BAD!
Unimpressive

This game is not significantly different from any number of similar games already on the market and it's only redeeming value is the opportunity to play SMERSH. The controls are clumsy, often requiring multiple key strokes for actions that shouldn't require any more than one click. The graphics are not on par with other current games and are reminiscent of older games rather than anything new. Gameplay is long and drawn out; quickly boring players who typically enjoy this type of game. Even the cut scenes lacked excitement and flow. I found the entire game dry and dull.
In short:
Controls - clumsy
Graphics - sub par
Gameplay - slow
Cut scenes - dull
Frustrating and Slow

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge gamer. However, even I don't think Death to Spies brings much originality to the table. I did the training session, which was a must for me, but even after the training, I found myself tripping over the keys, particularly in combat mode. Maybe that's just because of my inexperience, but I think the occasional gamer like me will find it as frustrating as I did. After the first hour, I got used to the controls more, but I can't say that I was having fun. And for those with a lot more gaming experience, somehow I just don't think this would be all that exciting.
The story was just so so, the graphics weren't great by any means- even I could tell that, and the controls on my mouse were really off. I tried adjusting it, but it was either too slow or too fast and it just kept jumping around- and my mouse is brand new so the problem isn't with the mouse. It just added to the frustration.
After playing Death to Spies for 3 hours+, I hadn't come close to finishing it and I never will. It's basically an uninteresting, unoriginal, repetitive, badly acted and unexciting first person shooter video game. And at $30.00, it's way overpriced. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it. You're betting off spending your money elsewhere.

No instructions to go with this, but going through the training level helped. Once I got into the actual game, I discovered that it is almost impossible to get past any guards without being seen, even if they haven't seen you! I couldn't hardly stand the fact that this game took about 30 minutes to install on my computer, which, in my opinion, was not worth it. There's much better games out there to be played having to do with WWII. I have a trackball mouse, which didn't work well *at all* with this game, having to switch to a normal mouse that everyone else uses. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone at any price.
They can keep it!

This game has so many modes of copyright protection, that it leads me to believe that there are parts of it that will not be uninstallable. I have had such problems and they require rebooting the computer which isn't nice. So, I chose not to install it. Consumers should make it clear that they will not buy such monstrosities.
Would not work on my PC

I tried several times but this game would not work on my PC. There were 2 discs to input. They kept saying "unable to launch" and "format not recognized".
I couldn't run it on Windows XP

I tried to load this game twice and it never worked. Not sure what the problem was since it arrived without instructions. I am sure the game is great and I was looking forward to checking it out so I was disappointed. The operating system I was using was Windows XP

Death to Spies is easily the most frustrating PC game I have ever played. I can understand making a game challenging but this game far surpasses challenging and moves into ridiculous. Here you are a USSR counterintelligence officer who is trying to infiltrate the Nazi party. The game does have great graphics, gameplay and is extremely faithful to historical settings. But overall, this one is just too time consuming, difficult and annoying for me to deal with.
