I didn't have high expectations for this game to begin with, but I did not expect it to be this bad. This game is like a horrible throw-back from the 90's with bad graphics, awkward controls, and lame movie clips. Even the training sessions that you start out with were so boring that I literally had to force myself through them. The idea behind the game isn't bad, but the way it is implemented is.
I found it very hard to "keep playing" this game... let alone try to enjoy it. I know I'm being pretty harsh, but I really think they could have spent a great deal more time polishing it up.
Pros:
-Lots of weapons to choose from... even from the very beginning.
-Decent sound effects including ambient noise like birds chirping.
Cons:
-Bad Graphics, Bad controls, Bad Clips, Bad overall design.
-Very little fun factor.
-Difficult to play... even on easy mode.
Conclusion: I won't be playing this game again. I wouldn't wish this game upon my worst enemy... it is THAT BAD!

I'm normally a flight-sim gamer, but WWII is an area of interest, and the concept of a SMERSH-based game is pretty original. (But it could just as easily have been OSS, or SAS, or Abwehr, I suppose). This is a third-person action, with emphasis on stealth and resourcefulless rather than massive firepower.
I received the game without any booklet or instructions, but this wouldn't be an obstacle to most gamers. Controls are fairly intuitive (although I needed to adjust the mouse acceeration), and once you've made it through the "training" level, you'll be comfortable with the key assignments. I thought it took an unusually long time to install (over 20 minutes), but once in, everything worked smoothly and with no quirks. ("Train hard, fight easy", as Zhukov said!)
Gameplay is fun without being ridiculously difficult, although I haven't made it to the most challenging assignments yet. The graphics are very nice, right down to the grass blowing in the breeze, and you can easily get immersed in the atmosphere. I'm definitely looking forward to working my way through this one - recommended to anyone with an interest in WWII or "spy"-type games.

This clunky title matches the clunky graphics. Despite spending 90 minutes "training" and attempting to master the many control options, I still felt inadequately prepared for the first mission: even on easy level. Compare this with MOH and Call of Duty, which both use very simple keys and mouse combinations to manipulate your character.
There are simply too many individual key strokes for each action. The fundamental problem for this game is not the tricky input, but the premise of sneaking around and offing the enemy in stealth mode. After 20 minutes of crawling around in an attempt to sneak up on the enemy, you start to wonder how long before the action starts.
This is not an action game.
The graphics are of the standard one would expect from a First Person Shooter (FPS) developed 10 years ago. Anyone thinking of picking up this game and looking for something new and exciting in a well-worn genre will be disappointed.

No instructions to go with this, but going through the training level helped. Once I got into the actual game, I discovered that it is almost impossible to get past any guards without being seen, even if they haven't seen you! I couldn't hardly stand the fact that this game took about 30 minutes to install on my computer, which, in my opinion, was not worth it. There's much better games out there to be played having to do with WWII. I have a trackball mouse, which didn't work well *at all* with this game, having to switch to a normal mouse that everyone else uses. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone at any price.

'Death To Spies' is a first person shooter set during the time of World War II. It's an OK game and that's the best word to describe it top to bottom: OK. Everything seen here has been seen before, yet the controls in other first person shooters are much better. Gameplay is OK and level goals are difficult to achieve at times. I'm not going to bother naming the far superior first person shooters out there on the market because if you are a fan of the genre you will already know what they are, but this game isn't the best attempt at adding to the library of other options.
Bottom line, if you really love all first person shooters and like the premise that this one is set during WWII, you probably will be happy with this release, just don't expect Half Life 3 before you sit down to start playing.
All in all, minor thumbs up.

Mediocre Spy Game

Crouched down in the bushes, you watch the gaurds pass. There are 3 of them, so you have to be careful. You reach into your backpack, and lob a gernade right in the middle of them, they try to scatter but in a suffocating blast all three of them are gone. You're next order of business is to carry the bodies off the road to hide them in the bushes. Next you confiscate the ammo, and disguise yourself with one of the uniforms that doesn't have blood on it. Now all you got to do is make it past the high ranking officer who will recognize you if you get too close....
So there you have it. Another level of Death To Spies. How is the game overall? To be honest it's a little bland. You take the role of a Russian operative. And you perform a number of missions. The game is cool because it does give you a number of real life options. You can sneak past guards, or try to knock them out, or use chloroform on them, or steal a uniform and walk past them, or you could whistle to distract them, or just steal a truck and run them over. The game does carry a lot of limitless possibilities.
That being said, the game is still pretty linear in the long run. You have a set number of goals you must accomplish with every mission. But at least the interface does a good job of keeping you informed so you're not lost as what to do next. There are a number of weapons to choose from, but at the same time stealth is usually your best bet. The game is realistic on the fact that even with your health you can't take too many bullets before you give up the ghost. The controls are a little too sensitive to me. So much that when I closed out the game my mouse felt slow on the desktop. But this doesn't detract from the game.
The story line is based off real events as well. But frankly I found the story really confusing. I do enjoy history, but I know nothing about Russian history during WWII so I was in the dark, and kind of bored watching the cut scenes. Although I do admit that the graphics are pretty good.
PROS: Good graphics. Tense missions make you feel like you're there. Good shooter scenarios mixed with stealth make the game work on more than one level.
CONS: Nothing makes the game stand out. Same old, same old. Hit detection is iffy sometimes. Story line is really obscure, and frankly kind of boring. Game is forgettable in the long run.
BOTTOM LINE: Game is very mediocre at best. It emersed me for a while, but not for long. It's a nice little piece of fluff. But if you buy it, don't rush to the store, or pay full price. Try to get this one for cheap. Don't go looking for much here, and you won't be disappointed.

Death to Spies, did you catch that last word? Spies? This is not a game about running pell mell through streets and fields, mowing down hundreds of enemies with every type of weapon known to man. It is a more subtle game, where patience, timing, and being invisible are desired traits. There is a training mode to get you started and let you get your feet wet. After that, you have missions, much like in the Metal of Honor series, where you must complete tasks before the level ends and you can move on.
My complaints: It is too linear, it would have been fun to be able to ramble around a bit and not be penalized by being "caught" just because you don't complete tasks in a particular order. There is usually more than one way to skin a cat, but apparently not in this game. When you do get an opportunity to pull out the firepower, good luck. Mouse control is jerky, slow and awkward. You can make adjustments on the mouse speed, but it is never a fluid movement.
Now for what I liked: I liked the laid-back attitude of the game. It required that you take a few moments planning your next move, then even more time executing it. For those who enjoy shooting everything that moves, you will be sadly disappointed with this game. If you enjoy solving problems, figuring out what to do next, and sneaking around without being seen (i think they call that spying, then you will probably have some fun with this game. I have to say, the more I play, the better I like it. It has no "WOW" factor, it just kind of sneaks up on you.
All-in-all, this is an okay game, but Atari can do, and has done better.
Frustrating and Slow

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge gamer. However, even I don't think Death to Spies brings much originality to the table. I did the training session, which was a must for me, but even after the training, I found myself tripping over the keys, particularly in combat mode. Maybe that's just because of my inexperience, but I think the occasional gamer like me will find it as frustrating as I did. After the first hour, I got used to the controls more, but I can't say that I was having fun. And for those with a lot more gaming experience, somehow I just don't think this would be all that exciting.
The story was just so so, the graphics weren't great by any means- even I could tell that, and the controls on my mouse were really off. I tried adjusting it, but it was either too slow or too fast and it just kept jumping around- and my mouse is brand new so the problem isn't with the mouse. It just added to the frustration.
After playing Death to Spies for 3 hours+, I hadn't come close to finishing it and I never will. It's basically an uninteresting, unoriginal, repetitive, badly acted and unexciting first person shooter video game. And at $30.00, it's way overpriced. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it. You're betting off spending your money elsewhere.

This game is not significantly different from any number of similar games already on the market and it's only redeeming value is the opportunity to play SMERSH. The controls are clumsy, often requiring multiple key strokes for actions that shouldn't require any more than one click. The graphics are not on par with other current games and are reminiscent of older games rather than anything new. Gameplay is long and drawn out; quickly boring players who typically enjoy this type of game. Even the cut scenes lacked excitement and flow. I found the entire game dry and dull.
In short:
Controls - clumsy
Graphics - sub par
Gameplay - slow
Cut scenes - dull

Not having played too many first person shooter games - I found this game to be quite fun. The game (for the vine program at least) arrives in a non-descript looking CD holder, and has no manual or directions (which isn't a problem in my view).
The graphics are very good, but stunning - at least on my machine which is a P4 with a 512mb Video card. Like another reviewer, I found the mouse control to be somewhat jumpy - and even after adjusting it I was still displeased with how the mouse worked. The keyboard controls are not difficult to remember.
You have to accomplish various solo missions behind enemy line. The super-imposed map feature that you can toggle on and off was very useful to me.
Overall a good meal, but not a great one!
