LOVED IT!

I absolutely love this game! I would play it again if it would work on my upgraded XP. That's my only complaint with Journeyman is that it has never been upgraded to the newer platforms. It crashes my computer every time I try to play it now (my old Gateway is long gone...) Too bad they aren't going to come up with another Journeyman!

If you like role-play type games, this one is for you. It's not as difficult as Myst, but not as tedious as Sanitarium or even Syberia (at times). The storyline is excellent! It's the only game besides Myst III that I have played more than once. Get it - you won't be disappointed!

The best series ever

I had some compatability problems with the first game in the series. The graphics and game play were what you would expect from a mid 80s game.

The last two games in the series made up for what the first one lacked. The game storyline was it's biggest strength. The graphics on the last two games was quite good and their game play much better than the first game. The third game was the best in terms of game play. It was cool to be able to scroll around with the mouse and look all around.

After playing the second game, I was so excited to see that there was a third Journeyman Project being released. The third one was just as good if not better than the second.

My favorite part was the wise cracking computerized lifeform named Arthur that got downloaded into my time travel suit. Arthur kept me in stitches throughout the last two games.

I enjoyed these games so much I hated to see them come to an end.

Maybe someday the software companies will do modern day remakes of these classic adventure games. I can only imagine how cool this game would be if it were remade using modern 3d game engines. (I guess I'm just dreaming.) Hmmm. I just realized how big of a geek I am. I really should get a life. Maybe even a girlfriend.

I recommend this game series whole heartedly.

Awesome, educational, and I have a fix, hopefully

My first review of this game was written here in 2000 and it is now 2004 and Buried in Time and Legacy of Time remain tops on my list of computer games, and I have played a few over the years.(...)

Be sure and right click the icon for the game and select Properties, Compatibility, and change the settings to 256 colors, 600x800, and to run in Win95 mode, and turn off the visual themes, and make sure a few things as possible are running in the background to give up as much memory as possible. This program is so virtual in its reality playing, watch for signs of motion sickness and obession!

Never before has a computer game I've played had so much staying power in my memory. While I adore Myst, Riven, Exile, and have played many interactive fiction games, among others, few stay in my memory over the years as much as Buried in Time. Truly a delight and well worth every penny spent on the game, in whatever format, though I'm hearing it runs better as a stand alone on the newer machines than in Trilogy form.

Absolutely incredible, very educational, and a must play for teenagers up to the elderly but actively thinking.

Buyer Beware

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE PURCHASING THE JOURNEYMAN TRILOGY

As you read the reviews, you might notice that some reviewers had problems with the 2nd game of the trilogy. Specifically, disk 2 of Buried in Times would not read. In fact, if you look carefully, you will see that everyone who bought the trilogy had this problem. Those reviewers who bought Buried in Time separately did not.

I did not notice this at first, so I took a chance on a used copy of the Journeyman Trilogy. I also have a disk 2 of Buried in Time that cannot be read. I decided to explore this a bit further by examining the files on each of the 3 disks. Disk 1 of the Trilogy version of Buried in Time is named BIT_MPC_1 and has an identifying file called BIT_DISC.1. Disk 3 is named BIT_MPC_3 and has an identifying file called BIT_DISC.3. So we would expect disk 2 to be named BIT_MPC_2 and its identifying file to be named BIT_DISC.2, but its not. Instead, Disk 2 is named BIT_MPC_3 and its identifying file is BIT_DISC.3 -- identical names to those used for disk 3. Not only that, but the size and creation date of the BIT_DISC.3 file on disk 2 is exactly the same as the one on disk 3. In other words, the disk that is labeled disk 2 is really just another copy of disk 3; there is no disk 2.

Given the prevalence of the problem (see other reviews here), it looks like this was a manufacturing problem. It's likely that many packages were shipped with this error. In fact, it appears that the technical support folks weren't even aware of the problem so whenever it was reported, they just shipped out another copy of the same defective disk (see one of the reviews here).

I haved tried to track down a correct copy of disk 2 for Buried in Time, but since so many of the original developers and marketers have either gone out of business or have been sold and merged with other companies multiple times, I am having no luck.

I am still happy with my purchase because I bought an inexpensive used copy. I will be able to play Journeyman Projects 1 and 3. I am trying to find someone who has the original Buried in Time so that I might use their disk 2. I wouldn't spend the money for an unopened box unless I was interested in it as a collector's item.

I hope this was helpful

The series is good, but this collection has problems

First off, the games themselves are absolutely brilliant, especially Journeyman project 2. Highly enjoyable, though the third is perhaps too easy except when you don't know what you're supposed to be doing.

However, the packaging is horrible. The Cd's are in cardboard slips, which are just taped together. The tape was broken before I opened it, so the cds had slid around and gotten scratched up. In any case the first game was unplayable (but that was because the game itself doesn't like new operating systems). The second game was nearly unplayable, as it failed to recognize disc 2, which is strangly the first disk you use. I managed to play it by using a demo disk, but I was severly limited in how far I could get. Furthermore, in the medival section a wall never blows up, making that section impossible. There was a patch for this, but it's sad they didn't patch the version ON THE CD. The third game seemed playable, but I ran into a corrupt file on the fourth cd, making me quite mad since I was close to beating the game at this point.

So, if you want to take the risk of having your cds scratched and unplayable, feel free to order this... the games are brilliant, but you might not be able to play them.

Best ever.

The first CD Rom drive I ever got came with a voucher for a program. The original Journeyman Project Turbo was my choice, and, I'd wager, one of the better choices I've made thus-far. This game series ranks as the BEST I have ever played, outstripping anything else in originality of story line, dialouge, ambient sound and graphics. I bought Buried in Time the day it came out, another worthwhile purchase. I did the same with Legacy of Time, which I foolishly loaned a friend who promptly moved out of state. Today I bought a used copy of Legacy on DVD, and it rekindeled my love afair with Journeyman.

Excellent game during it's time.

I have had Journeyman Project Turbo for a long time, and I've always enjoyed playing it.

-This game also works on Windows 2000 with service pack 3!

I've tried it on Windows 2000 and still works with no flaws.

Move over, Gabriel Knight!

Jane Jensen (the Gabriel Knight series) has received worldwide acclaim for her writing, and deservedly so. But I think the Journeyman series rivals GK for the best-written adventure game "saga" ever. Each game individually carries great storylines, packed with suspense and mystery. Additionally, games 2 and 3 contain quite a bit of humor from Arthur, your wisecracking AI sidekick. Now ADD to that the fact that there is a wonderfully consistent overriding plot that ties all three games together...a plot that plays out like the best episodes of Star Trek: TNG.

Of course, it isn't writing alone that make TJP so wonderful. The puzzles are original and top-notch, varying in difficulty from "piece of cake" to real head-scratchers. Each game offers a different kind of interface, allowing different types of puzzles for each volume. (Another similarity to the GK series.) And the acting (particularly in TJP3) is some of the best ever in a PC game. Only GK2 and Black Dahlia even come close to the same level. Given the notoriously bad acting in many Full Motion Video games, this alone would make TJP a rare jewel. When you combine all the elements, TJP ranks right up there with Gabriel Knight, Myst, and Monkey Island (for its incredible humor) as the best adventure game series of all time. Not bad company!

A word about the complaints of bugs in TJP1: Most of the problems can be solved by simply running your QuickTime player in the background while playing the game. (The most common problem is that the game calls for a file then decides it can't find it faster than the QuickTime can load.) Also, There are some compatibility problems with the nVidia TNT video card. Most other cards or integrated graphics chipsets will play the game with no trouble so long as you configure the game correctly. TJP2&3 also have the problem that on many computers you MUST fully disable any sound acceleration (Go to control panel/multimedia/audio/advanced properties/performance on Windows9x.) or you get garbled audio.

The Journeyman Project is Great!

When I bought the Journeyman Project Trilogy, I absolutely loved it! The graphics were very intriguing for the second one and third one, but I could have sworn that the graphics in the first one were hand drawn! In the second and third games you have an artificial intelligence named Arthur who gives you hints, if you need them. He will also give you very funny comments. The main reasons I like the games are because of the graphics and puzzles (they're really good). The only thing I didn't like was in the first and second games, you could die, and in the first game, you had a limited amount of time. I highly recommend this one! Note: If you have problems with the first and second games running windows 95/98, try setting your graphics resolution to 256 colors (right-click on your desktop and click properties, click the settings tab, and set the colors to 256 colors). If you hear garbled or popping sounds in the third game's audio, consult the game's booklet for the solution.

Lots of humor, and nicely made

The Journeyman Project 3 (TJP3) is a nice game overall, and certainly worth the money. Ok, the graphics are a bit outdated, but having said that, it is certainly a game worth buying and playing. The storyline is not all that orginal - you have to go back in the past to find clues to a mystery in present day or future. In short, it's up to you to save the earth. For those who played the (very disappointing) `Schizm', yes, it must have been a inspiration to the Schizm-makers.... TJP3 has lots of humor, more than any other adventuregame I've played. It provides you with hints and nudges if you want to. The suuroundings, especcially the Tibetan region, is stunning, and very true to life (I've been in Tibet...). So, long story short: this game is a good buy. Note that the first two installments of this game, TJP1 and TJP2, will encounter frequent problems on newer computers. TJP1 might not run at all, TJP might experience difficulties in reading some of the cd's. TJP2, by the way, is in the same class as TJP3 - great story.
