Won't work on XP

I have tried installing this game on Windows XP after I was told by the seller of this product that it would be compatible. On the first attempt, the install screen did show up and went through the tests, but then said it could not read a file in the program. Now when I try to install the game, it won't even display the install screen. This is a huge dissapointment because the games are such huge classics.

An uneven collection of a (mostly) influential game series.

The King's Quest series has been long regarded as one of the most influential adventure series in computer gaming history. That may or may not be true--you can decide for yourself if you purchase this package. Unfortunately, only a couple of the games are worthy of being influential--the middle games in the series are the most fully realized and most satisfying games. Most of the others are hollow playing experiences, offering little besides scintillating graphics and usually interesting sound and music. Even the bonus games are, for the most part, mediocre offerings at best. If you are a long-time fan and would like to own the games, it's definitely worth it. But you will most likely otherwise not be swayed to think King's Quest is the greatest game series ever.

you can get it cheaper

I have enjoyed the Kings Quest series very much, but I didn't get started until Kings 5. I got this set, but the gameplay and graphics, though a head of their time in their day, was real tough to play in this current day and age. While these all have great stories, graphically and challenging wise, Kings Quest 6 & 7 are the only 2 that are really playable now. Kings 7 is graphically very good and the story and gameplay is pretty cool. The only thing missing from this set is The Mask Of Eternity which is actually Kings Quest 8. Graphically, it's a stellar upgrade over these and the gameplay is faster paced with alot less puzzles to solve. Roberta Williams was definitley ahead of her time and I hope she continues to create these Kings Quest games(go to gamespot.com and look for an article on Roberta Williams. It was an excellent story).

I've been playing King's Quest since I was 4 years old, starting obviously with the first one. I can honestly say that KQ1-KQ6 were absolute masterpieces. If you love fantasy, you will love these games. The only one I can't praise is the 7th one. It was sort of experimental, and the graphics were far too cartoonish (for my taste, anyway). But the rest of them are really pieces of art. Although the earlier ones do not have state of the art graphics (when compared to current games) they are nonetheless enjoyable. In fact, the graphics were amazing for their time. I think my favorite one would have to be KQ4: The Perils of Rosella. You journey through the mystical land of Tamir as Princess Rosella on a quest to find a magical fruit that will heal your dying father and a talisman that will heal a dying fairy. These games are for those of us who would rather test our wit than our reflexes. Both the Laura Bow mysteries are also incredible. I find myself replaying them often, and noticing things I hadn't before. And both of them, even the first one with its EGA graphics, have spooky moments. Roberta Williams created the first ever non-"text only" computer adventure game. I think anyone would want to play one of her games based on that fact alone.

The Colonel's Bequest

I bought this collection for one reason only and that was it contained the fabulous murder mystery Colonel's Bequest - a true lost treasure.

Laura Bow accompanies her friend Lillian to her grandfather's estate in a Southern bayou for a weekend where all her relatives discuss her grandfather's will. Of course the first night is riddled with murder and your job is to find out who is killing the guests.

The game has no "point" system in it which makes it hard to play and to complete the notebook at the end. But this will keep you playing. You won't believe one bayou has so many secrets. Play this game at night for maximum effect like I did. I also believe the early VGA graphics add to the errie atmosphere. A must play for a cold lonely night!

King's Quest is a game for a king!

King's Quest is an adventurous game series that includes such adventures as trying to save castle treasures, searching for a queen to add to the throne, escape an evil wizard, rescue a fruit that can cure heart attacks, find your missing house, save a damsel in distress, and reunite with your mother from a witch's spell. It also comes with extra games like the fantastic Colonel's Bequest mystery game. The WONDERFUL Laura Bow 2 game (talking version on disk 3) and some childrens game called Mixed Up Mother Goose. Even I'm reviewing King's Quest, You should buy the Laura Bow series (Colonel's Bequest and Laura Bow 2: Dagger of Amon Ra) as a game becauuse they are a lot more exciting murder mystery games than some average fantasy game about dragons, flying monkeys, and talking ponies. So, in conclusion, I completely reccommend the Laura Bow series (Number 2 is better because it has completly catchy music and talking characters! )

Great for everyone!

The Kings Quest series are probably the most memorable adventure games in existance. They appeal to children, adults, men, and women alike. The games are serious, slapstick, romantic, dashing, and so many other things all rolled into one. I really loved this series and I'm glad that someone decided to package them.

Each game follows a member of the Daventry family in one manner or another. As an added bonys, girls.. sometimes the hero is actually a heroine! As the series progress you can watch the Daventry family grow, have children, and suffer tradgedy through at least three generations.

The only thing that might be a problem is that as some of these games are old they might not work on newer machines. Make sure that you have all the patches from Sierra and read the documentation thoroughly in case the games don't function your first try. With a little bit of computer coaxing you should get them going again, but you also might decide it's not worth the trouble.

Great overall, but one glaring flaw.

It was great to revisit the old Sierra King's Quest games, but my favorites have always been the Laura Bow series. It was great to be able to play The Dagger of Amon Ra on a new, faster computer than the one I had five years ago when I bought the game originally. But beware - you can't finish the game. There is an explanation with the game that they couldn't fully convert it to work on today's computers, and you completely forget about it until the killer begins to chase you at the end, and you realize that the game freezes and you can't do anything. It is very disappointing. I wish they would revamp it and make it work for today's computers - it's such a good game. Otherwise the set is great - and it is hilarious to see the primitive graphics that we used to think were so cool. :)

An absolute classic.

King's Quest was Sierra's milestone maker from the 80s up through the early 90s. King's Quest 1 was the first computer game with color graphics, King's Quest 4 was the first game with digital music, and King's Quest 5 was the first game with complete voice actors, and King's Quest 6 was the first game exclusively on compact disc.

But besides all that, the games themselves are practically masterpieces in their own right. That is, except for game 7. I'm not sure if that was made before or after Sierra was bought out by Cendant, but it would certainly explain some things. In any case, the mediocrity of it doesn't detract from the rest. However, you should note that King's Quest 1-4 and the Laura Bow games are made for DOS and may not work properly under new versions of Windows. They do work for me under Windows 2000 with VDMSound, though.
