When I first heard of this game, I thought it would be very cool. I also thought it would be like the next GTA3 (Grand Theft Auto 3). But, after about 15 minutes of gameplay it gets boring. The graphics are terrible. Everybody is ALWAYS running around and causing a huge commotion which disables you from anything to do. But, if you are convinced that you HAVE to have this game, do yourself a favor and rent it first.
PRAY WITH ME PLEASE.....

Dear Lord, why dost thou send us crappy games like this one? All I wanted was a game atleast as good as GTA 3, but instead Rockstar sent down a large turd disguised as a PS2 game? Thanks for GTA 3 though and please b*tch slap ROCKSTAR for making this pathetic waste of time.
Forever and ever whatever,
amen
This goes out to all of the people who said this game sucked

Look people, I don't get it with you guys! This game is not GTAIII! I don't know why everybody said that they thought this was going to be like it! Look, it's old-school, hardcore, old-fashioned, Streets of Rage action! And I know this just sounds like another review but trust me, don't listen to the ones who actually thought this game was going to be like GTAIII, because it's not. But it's old-fashioned, kick butt action! And I think Rockstar couldn't have done a better job...

When I rented this game, I was expecting another GTA3 except you get to run around rioting. But what I found was nothing near what I hoped for. Instead of the realistic graphics, weapons, and people like in GTA3, I found a cartoonish world without the graphics and realism of of GTA3. In this game, you just go around rioting. I mean smashing windows, burning buildings and cars, tipping over cars, eveything you'd expect in a riot. Rockstar, you could've done SOOO much better.
Great concept, good execution, some flaws...

When I picked up this game I was still reeling over the sheer fun factor of GTA3, so I was expecting at least something comparable. Problem is, when your standard happens to be last year's best game your expectations tend to be rather high.
So let me begin by covering the highlights. First off, I cannot stress enough how disturbingly theraupic this game is. Oh my god, the violence! The gore! The massive bloodshed in this game is worth the price alone. The graphics are stunning; how VIS got that many characters at once onscreen with no slowdown is beyond me. The true sense of a populace's collective flying off the handle makes this game a truly unique experience.
However this game, like all games, suffers a bit from its flaws. The structure of the game doesn't do much to support the action onscreen. Its two modes, Chaos and Revolution, just seem like secondhand ideas that justify the point of the game. you also have to consider that the camera angle at times throw off your perspective a bit.
If you're pondering getting this game, by all means do, but dont come into it thinking youre getting another GTA3, you're not. but what youare getting is like nothing you've experienced before.
Just strap in and get ready. ;)
Lives up to the hype

This game has gotten nearly as much hype as Metal Gear Solid 2, and like that game, it lives up to it. I got State of Emergency a few days before release (Feb 16) because a local department store (think bullseye) accidently put it on the shelf early. There are two modes in the game: Chaos and Revolution. Chaos is fun for a while but gets old quick. It reminds me quite a bit of Dynasty Warriors 2, the key exception being that nearly everything in the game is interactive. You can pick up almost anything, break any window, or destroy any vehicle. If someone gets decapitated, you can pick up their head and use it as a weapon. Oh yeah, in case you don't know yet, this is an EXTRAORDINARILY violent game. The true heart of the game is Revolution mode. Here you fight to overthrow "The Corporation" by helping your fellow freedom fighters accomplish different missions. There are a ton of missions. They are mostly relatively short but they are also just the right mix of entertaining and challenging, which makes this game actually Fun to play. Unfortunately, not many game designers have that goal in mind lately...
Very good game, but with many flaws

For those of you thinking this will be like GTA3, it isn't. Not even close. I'm not going to compare it because neither can compare. But I may have to just to contrast the two a bit.
This is a great game. Much credit is due to Rockstar, because once again, they set the bar for entertainment, violence, and fun.
The modes of SOE are cool. Revolution, the story mode, and Chaos, the mode where you go around beating people senseless. (Very therapeutic after a hard day, BTW)
Revolution is nice. The story mode isn't as in depth as GTA3 (first comparison), but it gets the job done. The missions are pretty challenging too. At first, things are easy, but then, things get very hard. Almost to the point where you can't do them. For instance, this one missions in China Town, you have to follow three members to the Corporation People, where they will spill where they are holding your ally. Easy? Sure. Then, you must go to the guy where he is surrounded by a gang. At the first shot, they will start attacking your ally. If you somehow manage to kill all of the gang, Corporation Guys show up with guns. If your ally doesn't die there, you must go to the safehouse. By that time, your ally is really low on health and anyway you go, people will show up with guns and kill your ally. Mission failed. VERY VERY HARD to pull off. But still fun.
Chaos is pretty good. Like Crazy Taxi, Final Fight, and any other fast paced game combined. Very nice.
Graphics are great, and the amount of people moving around are cool. (Though they really don't notice you until you fire a gun where they all jump to the ground, or you start killing one of them) Music is good also.
Weapon variety is very good, not to mention.
Unfortunately, I can't give 5 stars. Because there is all of this bad stuff. For instance, the camera angle is horrible! HORRIBLE! You have to constantly fix it, and if you don't, you may take a blind corner and smack into a bunch of enemy guards. Also, you can't pillage stores. You can't go in them and wreck things. (Not really a problem per say, but it may be a good idea for the future) Also, no cinematics. Would have been nice to have them. People also run around like drones.
All in all, this game is a very good game. You can't compare it to GTA3, because both games are completely different. To be on the safe side, rent this game. Most people like it, but some don't. You can find out for yourself by doing so. This game is extremely violent, and it deserves the M rating. So, go buy or rent this game with the knowledge that this isn't like GTA3. Keep your mind open to this. Don't expect another GTA3 or sequel with this game. Because this game is a whole other game.

This game has pushed the limits on what a game should be even further than GTA3. Parents are garunteed to hate it and kids are gonna love it. you can be on screen with more than 100 people at once. the textures are planer than what you might be used to, but it more than makes up for it with the level of interactability the game has. YOu can pick up just about anything, break any window you see, and all the people react to you in their own way (well, there will be repeats, but there is a lot of variety). there's a great array of weapons and just tons of stuff to do. if you liked GTA3, get this game!

wish there were user reviews when I went out and shelled out the dough for this one.1st off, im an avid gamer, so listen when I tell you DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! I understand you cannot compare GTA3 and SOE, so I will not do that and review that game solely on its own.I'm all for senseless, silly beat downs in games, but all this game is a limited environment, cant go into stores and loot like I thought.with mongoloid-like AI characters.Oh, and there are "missions", which are actually, "go here, do this, get that...blahblah", all within constricted environments. The game says "18 and over", but to be, it should say "18 and under".Its just that tedious and juvenile.
the graphics, and I know they are supposed to be "cartoony", look like some N64 garbage. I love Rockstar, but it seems some of there "in-house" companies are churning out some serious lackluster, over hyped titles such as this.
I'm, bummed even my friends were glad I bought it first so they did waste their money. this isn't even worth a rental, im serious.and I bet they were will be a whole bunch of bad reviews to follow from other customers....

Title basically said it all. This game was ok at first but it got old quick. Every level acts and looks the same. I found it more fun just running around shooting people, not going with any story line but that got old quick. This game is worth renting, playing two or three times but that's about it.
