What a gem!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

I enjoyed this game more than I have enjoyed a game in a long time. The puzzles are fun rather than irritating, it is not a button masher, and the graphics, music and characters were engaging. The game is a bit buggy (froze on me once) and there are not enough save points, particularly in the mummy sections (where a freeze put me back an hour). Also, some of the battles were hampered by bad camera angles. But overall, the experience outstripped most platform games. I am looking for the sequel!

Great idea marred by one glaring flaw:lack of saves

This is a good idea for a game with almost perfect execution and some amazing graphics with one glaring problem: In an effort to challenge long-time gamers who blow through their games in a week, this title let's you save too infrequently as incentive to perform well along the way. What could be more frustrating, especially in the initial hours of gameplay when you're trying to figure it all out? Ugh. Having to replay the last 30 minutes because I couldn't save it before I go to work or whatever is a mindboggling oversight.

Very nice, sharp game with one thing that will kill it for people who just want to have some fun.

Good game but...

This is a fun and challenging game. Like one of the previous reviewer said, this game really resembles the old Zelda games on NES, or more recently, the Indiana Jones series on N64 (and probably other systems). It's mainly a puzzler with some run and
jump qualities to it. As an experienced gamer, I'll tell you that the mental tasks this game really makes me scratch my head. But at the same time, I'm enjoying the quest as Sphinx and Mummmy (I love that Mummy!).

Here are my criticisms:

Need more save points or option to save on your own...need maps of the worlds in the game...can be very frustrating at times...desperately needs voice acting!...if you cannot solve a challenge, you'll most likely end up shutting the game off and leave it to get dusty...There's a lack of consistency with both characters' appearances and comedy...colors could be better.

If you're looking for something a bit less mentally exhausting, especially if you're a gamer of little patience, go for Jak II or Ratchet II. Although the content of the game seems ok for younger gamers, they'll probably end up playing for an hour and putting it on the shelf.

The Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is a an ok-ok game. To start off they really need some voice actors in the game. They just have the charactors move thier lips and captions are below for you to read. Next thing they need more save "statues" or you can be able to save by yourself because when you get a "GAME OVER" usally you start back 30 minutes from the last time you saved which can be very frustating. The good thing about this game is that there is very good graphics. You can clearly see whats going on. But the good/bad thing is and that the "Missons" are very challening. Some missons take 1 hour untill you figure out what to do. It got so frustating for me that I gave up and had to print out a walkthrough of one misson because I was still stuck on it after 3 days. Another thing about this game is that this game takes a very long time (Maybe 3 weeks for the average video player) to beat so you get your moneys worth out of it.For all you video players out there think you can beat this game in less than a day you think wrong. To conclude I think every video player out there should own this game. I think you would enjoy it.

Great Fun

Excellent game. I am a big fan of the Zelda games on Ninentdo and this is the first PS2 game I've played that comes close to the look and feel of the Zelda games. Great graphics and story keep the action moving. I also like being able to explore without having a time limit. The only real drawbacks -- and the reason I did not assign 5 stars -- are the "save" feature and the long load times between segements. Unlike other games (such as the Zelda games), your place is not automatically saved when you "die" or when you have to shut down for the evening. This leads to having to play the same course over again just to get back to where you were before you had to shut down. Other than those two issues, this is a game I can recommend without hesitation.

Egyptian fun

If you like the Zeldatype games then you will love this game. There is so much to see and lots of puzzles to solve. There is plenty of fighting monsters that range from very easy to OH MY GOD that's tough! There are plenty of mazes to get lost in, lots of jumping and running. The graphics are, to say the least, awesome! The only drawbacks to the game are the lack of save points and the awful camera views. Sometimes it seems as if the camera is working against you and leaves you quite frustrated. There are many places where you must position the camera manually. That said I still recommend this game. It is very fun and absorbing. At first I didn't like the fact that the action switches from Sphinx to the Mummy and back again, but you get used to that and it is necessary to advance the game. If the camera views and save points were better I would give this game 5 stars. It is worth the money, especially at only $20!

this game is great i just got it for Christmas. This is one of the best games of the year.Graphics 10, music 10, gameplay 10, diffuculty 10, weapons 10..I love the stragety tasks, they are really fun to figure out. I especially like the part when you get to use the blade of Osiris that you can slash your enemies with and i really like the shield of Osiris because you can guard yourself against powerful blows and magical attacks. The blow pip s tight to because you shoot monsters with darts from far away. I doubt you'll get bored of this game

Interesting game; some frustrations

This is a great game, but it's not for the faint of heart. Some areas might frustrate even the most experienced gamer if you don't know what you're doing. Remember that this game has an emphasis on weapons of opportunity, meaning you have to use stuff lying around to make the boss vulnerable to your sword attack; i.e. use the caged spiders when you're up against the Geb Queen, and the loose rocks when you're fighting the Pharaoh Spider. The bosses themselves have to enable you to reach these weapons. This game jibes with what I know of Egyptian history with a few exceptions: Tutankhamen is Akhenaten's son, not his brother; Heliopolis is near the Pyramids, not Abydos; plus the obvious gamer's license of animals that talk, and the use of force-fields and electricity. I highly recommend this game for those who like Legend Of Zelda-style RPGs and other "armchair Egyptologists" like me; I just wish we could fast-forward through cutscenes we've already seen, and use actual voices instead of subtitles.

One of THE best video games I have ever played!

INTRO.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy is an original, inventive game set in Ancient Egypt. You have to play as two characters to advance the story: the powerful and daring demigod, Sphinx, and the reluctant but un-killable Mummy. This game is the absolute top of the line, with the best plot, graphics, and gameplay I have ever seen. There are a few drawbacks to this game, but there aren't many and they're really minor.

GAMEPLAY

The game as said before, follows Sphinx and the Mummy, both in their own different and detailed environments. The areas for both characters are beautifully well done and just show how far the creators of this game stretched the limits of animation. The controls are easy to learn, the music is great, and the plot is deep and draws you into the game. The Sphinx levels revolve around strategy AND fighting, not just one or the other. (Thankfully, this is not a game where you just kill other enimies.) The Mummy levels are almost all strategy. Why? Here's the bad news: The Mummy has no weapon and can't fight. Here's the good news: He doesn't have to! There are no monsters, and here's another bit of good news: The Mummy can't die. He's dead already. So that means that you can do nearly anything to the Mummy... >:)
And that includes flattening him into 2-D, cutting him into three mummies setting him on fire, getting him electrocuted, turning him into smoke, and changing him into a bat mummy. Sound fun? It is!

PROS AND CONS

Pros:
1. Great graphics
2. Wonderful music
3. A plot that draws you in the farther you go
4. Easy to learn controls
5. Fun levels

Cons:
1. Some levels do seem almost impossibly hard.
2. There is a glitch in the game: beware of this.
When you're getting the Abydosian Crown, and you return it to Anubis, some people have a problem where he says that you better hurry and get the Crown, even when you have it.

OVERALL

Overall I'd say this game is a must have. I don't think I've met one person who didn't like this game.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy freakin' rocks!

I love this game so much! I'm very into Ancient Egyptian stuff, and I know a lot about Egypt. This game was not only a blast to play, but, concerning things that actually could've happened, it was also very accurate! The story line is easy to follow, the game play is pretty good, and the graphics are pretty decent, too. I highly recommend this game!
