A great game for Splinter Cell enthusiasts

IGI 2 Covert Strike is the latest in a line of single-player stealth, similar to Splinter Cell and Hitman.

Your character, Jones, works alone with a variety of weapons through 19 campaigns. Each one, like Splinter Cell, emphasizes using stealth and avoidance over in-your-face confrontation.

The weapon selection is impressive. There's everything from the basic Colt python and AK47 that we all know and love to the M104, LAW 80, twin UZI and RPG7. If you hit a situation where firepower is necessary, you've got it there.

There's thermal imaging and binoculars to help you plan your attack. On the downside, like several of the other stealth games, it assumes you will probably play a mission a few times to figure out the best way to avoid the paths of your enemies.

However, the single player missions are (like just about every other game I've played recently) mostly a training ground for the challenge of playing this on line. The AI in the game is reasonably good - but wait until you go up against other humans on line! That's where you really start to have some fun.

The graphics are rather good, but not as stunning as far as light and shadows as Splinter Cell was. Still, Splinter Cell was rather amazing, so it's not a bad thing to say it comes relatively close. Motion is smooth and the environments realistic. Sounds are realistic as well, with footsteps and mood music drawing you in.

A good game for those who have played through Splinter Cell and are ready to take that style of gameplay to the next level!

IGI 1 was one of my fave games of 2001 although it was quite frustrating. The promised stealth aspect of the game never quite worked, and most missions ended with you killing just about every guard in sight or at least making a mad dash once the final objective was in sight. IGI 2 fixes a lot of these problems. First, stealth is absolutely necessary. Unlike most shooters, you can't carry an entire arsenal under your kevlar. Like in Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon, you can carry a realistic amount of ammo for one rifle, one sidearm and some grenades. The enemy AI is much better than the first. The amusing but annoying trick of nailing a perfect headshot while a tango 5 feet away stands idle is no more... these tangos are twitchy and will call for backup in a heartbeat. In the first 3 levels which I have played, Jones only kills a few tangos and must avoid the rest, since engaging in an all out firefight a la Soldier of Fortune will quickly result in a shallow grave. Second, Jones has some neat gizmos at his disposal, mainly the thermal imaging device, which can see through some walls although not all. Completing a mission usually involves crouching while observing patrols and waiting for the best moment for a quick, unseen takedown. The stealth aspect keeps the tension high. Many times, I have planned a stealthy assault only to be surrounded by tangos blazing away. The graphics are quite sharp.

It's unfortunate that this game is coming out just as Red Storm is releasing Splinter Cell and Raven Shield and Novalogic is releasing Black Hawk Down. IGI 2 deserves a look and will not disappoint. Don't buy it if you're looking for a hyper violent run and gun shooter - buy Allied Assault or Soldier of Fortune 2 instead if you want that. But if you want an engrossing, well planned shooter which relies as much upon planning and stealth as upon firepower, then IGI 2 is for you.

F.P.S. Delight

I purchased ' IGI-2 COVERT STRIKE ', a short time ago, to replace one I lost due to DVD malfunction.
Thankfully, ' Amazon ', carried NEW Games of IGI-2.The game it's self is a dream to play & set up to your own liking. I use a 256MG Video Card & Windows XP system & have had no difficulty playing the game. The graphics are wonderful, The landscapes are so real, it's really hard to tell the difference from real life. The AI characters all respond to your every sound or movement.

But here's the real kicker, regardless what others say, I have not found any working CHEATS!!, So you must take your time, be very careful or you will be shot.
In most of the levels you may save the game, but your severely limited on how many saves you get.
While there are some keyboard moves you need, Primary control is in the mouse.
One Hint, Keep those Heavy weapons for emergencies, You will need them.
Overall, Great game, Great play, Few if any glitches, Well worth the price.

Forget all these lame reviews. I played the demo, liked it, waited for the price to drop and bought it. I am extremely happy with it. I am a veteran stealth gamer, and this one is quite hot. Forget Splinter Cell. It's a console game. Does everyone like that ... third person view? Gag. It pulls all the immersion right out of the game. IGI, on the other hand, offers a ton of killer missions in a great 1st person view with a bunch of cool gadgets and weapons. It was exactly what I was looking for. Play the demo 1st, then buy it. If you hate it, go pick up ROTC or some other mind numbing shooter.
(It loses 1 star for being damn hard!)

I found IGI-1 so interesting that I had no second thought in buying IGI-2... and yes it did pay my money.... The graphics and sound is extremely good giving you full real life effect. The objectives are not so easy. The enemy can easily strike you and it is not possible to recover your health unlike the first part. If you get killed you have to restart the game all over again. At times this may be frustrating but one way its good. It will bring you more ideas and strategies to achieve those objectives. You can carry a max 2 weapons and few grenades and nothing more than that. For most part of the game you will find the AI acts pretty smart and it will always keep you busy. But yes you can find loop holes in some of missions. In IGI-2 you will have thermal imaging camera which means you can see your enemies even through walls and locate their positions. You can now stay behind the wall and start shooting your enemies right through the wall. All your enemies are dead without you loosing any life. It is difficult to move right or left if you are crawling. But overall you find this game interesting and is worth buying.

Waited a long time for this game was worth the wait

Back in the year 2003-2004 I played the heck out of this game. I enjoyed every moment. Back then the graphics were considered "very good". This game is somewhat a stealth based game so if your into stealth this should be in your collection. I see a writer of a review had stated that it is/was annoying that he had to start over if he got caught and that he had to sneak around in some parts of the game. Well yeah...Duh! it's part of the game man. Maybe you aren't geared for stealth based games but back to this game. This is a story driven single-player game. Continuing from where the first game left off. I think you have the option of having 1st & 3rd person views. There are several levels to this game. 19-missions are set in real world locations spanning three continents. Missions ranging from all-out fire fight and assaults. There are some Covert surveillance ranging from thefts, escapes in urban and rural environments. You get to use several weapons if needed though sometimes you are encouraged by Intel to use stealth & intelligence. You will have more than 30 guns and other weapons. These weapons are; Sub-Machine guns, miniguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, rocket launchers, grenades and knives. To my recollection the ending didn't leave me hanging. It is a very fun game and for the price? Why not!? Buy it and have fun!

Got this for a friend, and he absolutely loves it, though he's still busy finishing IGI 1 still.

So-so on fun, but frustratingly buggy!

As a fan of the first IGI, I eagerly awaited IGI 2. As other reviewers have stated, the game looks very nice, but something about the gameplay is lacking. Worse, when you reach the 3rd or 4th mission, many users are encountering a major bug that shuts down the game and brings you back to windows. I haven't been able to proceed past this point and I gave up trying. I'm now waiting for the inevitable patch. (I'm running XP on a 2.4GHZ, HP wih a 128 NVidia 4200Ti.) I was enjoying the game up to that point. I certainly wouldn't call it great, but it WAS fun. That is, until it stopped working altogether. Save your money until a patch is released.
