I had been waiting for the next ghost recon game for PC for about 2 years. Imagine my dissapointment when I read many reviews telling how none of the aspects of the original game carried over. I thought maybe I'd buy it anyway and give it a shot but everything I had read about it was right. This is not Ghost Recon, just another Urban Warfare game. The vast open areas of the forest, jungle, and desserts - gone. The ability to switch between sqaud members - gone. The ability to quick save your game - gone. No more variable weapon zoom either. Everything that made the first Ghost Recon such a great game has been removed and in its place you have yet another game to add to the Rainbow Six series. Sure, its a decent game and the graphics are nice but it does not deserve the Ghost Recon title. If you loved the original game then I'd save your money on this one.
Despite a number of major flaws, this is simply an excellent game.

Provided your computer has excellent specifications, as in 1 Gig of ram (minimum) 256 MB Video Memory, and 2.8 gigs worth of CPU, this is an excellent game.
Ghost Recon is a war simulator, despite what it says. You duck for cover, issue orders to your squade of three, and brutally fight massive firefights against enemy terrorists while trying to reach an objective. This IS NOT done in a standard manner, this is done with absolute realism. You cannot simply run around firing at enemy soldiers and expect to win, if you do that, you will be killed, you have to fight in a realistic manner.
Here's how it all pulls together, these are the major flaws I refer to,
First off, you cannot save your progress. Rather, the computer checkpoints you every so often during a mission, and if you lose, you restart at your last position.
Second, your team mates seem reluctant to fight, that is, they stay very far behind, and their performance is rather minimal, definitally not Special Force's material.
Thirdly, there is no briefing before missions, none. This wouldnt be an issue, save for the fact that you equip yourself before each mission, and knowing what the mission has in it would be helpful.
The graphics in this game are amazing. The AI is decent.
Overall, this is an excellent game.
Different... but Good

Once you get past the fact that this is not the same as earlier GR releases on the PC, it is a fun game as well as being visually stunning. It is also difficult.
AI & Movement: The AI is intelligent, at sometimes I think the enemy AI behaves better than your squad AI. Having said this, you have to be careful when moving. If you're making a lot of noise the enemy will know what direction you're coming from. i.e. running and hitting items as opposed to sneaking/peaking. But, I do enjoy the new feature of running and sliding (either to prone or on character's back)
Squad-play: You're the squad leader and your survival is paramount. Due to this, you'll have to utilize your team and tactics to survive. Thankfully, the latest patches fixed some of the squad-related glitches.
It's also too bad that you don't have as many options (weapons, etc) when it comes to outfitting your squad. I do enjoy firing the sniper rifle *Through* objects but it has a slow reload (even for a bolt-action) and reacquire target time. I also miss "unlocking" characters w/ special abilities and the like.
Overall it is an enjoyable game and I look forward to the developments of GRAW2. However it's a toss up between getting the console or PC version.
If there was only a negative star rating...

This game is absolute trash.
I have a system running a 3.84 GHz overclocked P4, with 2 GB of RAM, and an overclocked GeForce 6800 GT. Suffice it to say, I never have a problem running games maxed out.
With THIS game, however, I was unable to maintain decent framerates, even at unreasonably low quality settings. It is essentially unplayable.
Search around the forums before you buy this one (I wish I had). You'll be hard-pressed to find a positive review of this turd.
Stay away!
Too damn hard, and it sucks

Quick saves are the only types of saves, and they are so damn rare you can't believe it. Easy difficulty might as well be impossible also. This game was tedious, it wasn't fun at all. Restarting over and over and over and over and over again made the game just plain suck. Do not buy this game. Yeah, I know it sounds cool: "Urban warfare" "Cross com system" blah blah blah, but don't buy it, it really sucks. Trust me, it really really sucks. AI sucks too, your squad mates might as well not even exist, they don't even do anything to help you out, the AI sucks. Also, the enemy are one hell of a shot. They are comparible to Marine Corps Snipers. They know where you are, and can hit you like you can't believe. Wow, a whole enemy army full of snipers, real good. Don't buy this game, you'll regret it.
good luck getting it to work

I have a brand new machine (albeit a laptop) with 1gb ram. but I can't get the game to run at all!
I've spent the past 2 days on every forum under the sun, all to nought.
It appears there only very few graphics cards that this game will work with & even if you have one of those, many people are reporting crashes, bad patches, all sorts of problems.
having read all the comments, my advice would be to stay away from this until Ubisoft sort out all the (many) problems
Not worth the money

Not worth the money. Takes too long to install, takes too long to load, and takes to long to replay over and over and over again because there is no save button.
In short, a game that falls well short of the standard set by F.E.A.R. and the like.
Might be worth it if it was in the $9.95 rack at Wal-Mart.
It's not the original or the 2 expansions. But?!

First to address some of the below complaints. I too was disappointed with the purely Mexico City setting; what a shame.Team mates show flashes of brilliance but are generally average, but they can shoot like Rambo, and often save your butt by pluggiong a threat from great distances. Limited saves plainly suck and I miss playing as other characters, however I really enjoyed issuing commands on the realtime satalite map, while watching, in an abstract manner, one of my men pop a guy from behind because I directed him there using KeyHole (KH Satalites, or whatever they have up there now) technology. No one has brought this up yet I believe. Isn't this supposed to be 2013! Where is my OICW with mounted camera sites? Why does the sniper use a bolt action 12.7 mil. rifle? Some of the tech seems right out of Yesterday, while other's are state of the art. Very Disappointing not to mention inconsistent. Hell the OICW was unlockable in the first games, are they suggesting that it will be out of date by 2013 and we'll have gone back to using single load and lauch underslung Grenade launchers. Oh!and the one feature the OICW was going to have and may now have is an airburst capability the can be set for distance by the soldier for dealing with gun nests and entrenched enemies.
Now that wasn't all criticizm, but this is pretty much all praise. The game is Beautiful. the charaters look and move great. The action is INTENSE and at the risk of sounding like a marketing Kool aider drinker, the lack of more than 8 to 10 saves per level adds a certain reality, and as I said, intensity to it. How often do the guys in Bagdahd get to save their "games". HERE is a novel thought, and I had a lot of fun with it. Leave the other guys behind (the three other ghosts). You can pick up fallen ammo from dead enemies, and though it is tough with no one at your back it's a hoot to take on all those guys methodically by yourself (always remember the satalite view, check it often and do it zoomed in, it,s absolutely necessary while attempting this). In fact there are 2 missions you have no choice in the mattter, you are solo and lovin it. It's hard as hell even on the easy setting, but what the guy said below about omniscient enemies just isn't true, you can line up a shot on distant enemies and close encounters with the comp. controlled soldiers seem to make them panic and miss worse than most people would. A single soldier working smart, methodically, and tactically sound can wipe out a whole base given patience, luck , and yes reloads galore.
Oh yeah, one last thing about 2013 why doesn't the pc version have thermaql goggles? I think they are present in the Kiddieboxes. why the heck would you send a guy into combat in 013 w/o thermal sights? Hey Sam Fischer's got em and he's just a washed up Marine, He's a badass though. Really WHERE ARE THE THERMAL GOGGLES!
But I have only owned it about a week and am done alredy, while holding down a mid 6 figure job 2 kids and a wife who understandably wants help. In other words I really liked the game, even when I was stuck on a 250 meter stretch for 2 real life days, I'd stay up till 3-4 trying to get by and this was the middle of the week.
Okay I'll give it a rest now, it's not the old GR, it's GRAW, and it can be appreciated as such.
Really good game, even though its not the original

First of all, those of you who say this is a console game, shut up
Go actually play the port of this on the PS2 and see what the difference is.
Ghost Recon is not a port onto PC, Ghost Recon was originally a PC game and therefore will always be a PC game ported to console.
Ghost Recon 2 was absolutely terrible and I'm glad it was skipped on for PC
They didnt carry some features over from the originals and that kind of sucks, but look at the reverse aspect of it
If you could pick your squads and take 6 guys into a mission, think of how much longer it would take to effectively move those squads through the gigantic environments that are provided in this game. It would take at least an hour or 2 i'm sure.
With a small 4 man team you only have to worry about those 3 guys, if you had 3 guys over somewhere 4 blocks away...you'd have to switch to them to move them closer, even with a waypoint system, you wouldn't be able to coordinate things that well.
You were never able to pick up weapons of fallen enemies in the original, and you never had to, those of you who played on easy never had to worry about ammo.
Actually you shouldn't have to worry about ammo in this game either, you can run a mission started with 16 mags for your main weapon, if you burn through that before you're done then you need to learn how to aim. The M8 rifle allows you to pick up ammo from fallen enemies so, there's your solution.
As far as I've played this game has the best outdoor urban environments in existence. notice I say urban, because Far Cry's are bigger feeling. But GRAW allows you to pick almost any route in a 5 block radius to reach your target, which allows you to flank and maneuver effectively.
The graphics are great, when you have a machine that can run it.
The gameplay is fun and exciting, I think the enemy AI is quite good.
The only real complaint I have with this game is the multiplayer...and its not the gameplay aspect, its the fact that I seem to have trouble getting connected sometimes, hopefully which will be patched soon.
to close, dont bother with this game on console, and dont call the PC version a console game, no its not the original, but its definitely a damn good game to play
Dont knock it til you can respect the things that it did well
Not in the tradition of Ghost Recon

What made Ghost Recon a great game has been removed from GRAW. The open play of the previous games in this series is missing. Not being able to Save your progress except at the checkpoints takes away from the fun. Forces you to replay long segments for one bad mistake.
