Short and Sweet

This is the best FPS I own and I own ALOT. Single player game is exilerating but a little short. Multiplayer is a mix between CS:Source and Unreal Tournament. MP gan get frustrating since you can get killed easily but when you wipe out 5 guys with one clip from the assault rifle it makes it that much more sweeter. This game is on the same level as Half Life 2 , Call of Duty and the first Halo. FPS's are a competitive market but among all of them F.E.A.R. takes no prisoners.

I FEAR the bad language but LOVE the game!

You should FEAR not having this game! This is the best FPS I've played in YEARS. The game had a good length, not too short or long. Can't wait for more. This game goes WAY overboard on the bad language. I found a hack to cut out most of the cursing (google it) and that made it better. I'm all for throwing it in as an accent to the action, but they go too far and it does nothing for the story. minus 1 star for language

Impressive visuals, fantastic gunfights, but boredom sets in.

I love first person shooter games. Games like "Half Life 2", "Far Cry" and "Call of Duty" have all been thoroughly entertaining. After reading great reviews of "F.E.A.R.", I figured I would undoubtedly enjoy it. As it has turned out, I did enjoy playing it, but I have quite a few complaints to make about it too.

I'll start with the good stuff though. This game looks absolutely fantastic! The graphics are awesome, the lighting and shadow effects brilliant (and used for good effect) and the animation is second to none. My PC isn't massive, but the game ran perfectly well with nearly all the bells and whistles turned on. "F.E.A.R" attempts to be a frightening experience through use of creepy sound effects and visuals and I must admit that I did get a serious jump quite a few times, along with that hair-raising-on-the-neck effect that comes with good horror. But the absolute best thing about this game is the gunfights. The enemies are reasonably intelligent and the weapons are satisfying to use. Time after time you will find yourself surrounded by enemies, having to use all your skills to keep personal damage to a minimum. I'd have to say these battles are more intense and satisfying than in any other single player game I've had the pleasure of playing.

Unfortunately, it's a double edged sword. The creators realised they were onto a good thing and ran with it. The game becomes extremely repetitive within a couple of hours. Fight your way through 5 or 6 enemies, walk down a creepy corridor hearing voices and seeing strange images, fight your way through 5 or 6 enemies, walk down another creepy corridor etc. etc. repeat over and over for the next 20 hours. The problem is that while the creepy parts are indeed creepy, they don't actually amount to anything, and by the 50th creepy corridor, it's just not creepy anymore. Half the time, you'll just be confused and hoping that eventually you'll find out what the hell is going on. While you will find out the cause of what's occurring, there is certainly no satisfying resolution in my opinion. I guess I feel that the "Half Life" games have a much better story, the "System Shock" games did creepy far better and the majority of major similar styled games (other than Doom 3) have a heck of a lot more variety than "F.E.A.R.". Perhaps some vehicles were needed, or contrasting environments, or a chase scene, or a defend point A from enemies B scenario would have broken things up.

Anyway, I've whinged enough. If you love "Doom 3", you'll love "F.E.A.R.". It looks spectacular and plays really impressively. But if you need more story and more variations than the standard fare, you may want to look elsewhere. I can't say it wasn't good, but I had to make myself finish it instead of wanting to, which isn't a good sign.

Easy to see why this was voted best shooter in 2005.
This game had great graphics and a good story.
Most fun I've had from a game in a long time-
Weapon selections are a crack-up!

I just got this game a while ago, and I have to say, this game is non-stop fun. The enemy A.I. is very impressive and very hard to out smart at some times. The graphics are incredible and the sound is amazing. The horror moments arent as scary as everyone says they are, but they can be somewhat disturbing. This game is awesome in every way, I definetly recommend this.

Fun game, but really taxes your system

Overall, this seems like a fun game. The AI is quite good (enemies will hide from you when under attack, they will yell out "flashlight" if they see your flashlight, etc.). Read other reviews if you're interested in the game play.

My biggest gripe is that it really taxes my system. I'm about halfway through, but I'm about ready to call it quits because my system keeps freezing up when I play it. I have a 2.66 ghz Pentium 4, 1 gb of RAM and a 128 mb AGP Radeon 9600 Pro. I realize that this isn't quite the optimal gaming system, but it more than exceeds the alleged "minimum" requirements listed on the box. *Allegedly* this game will run on a 64 mb GEforce 4 Ti card; I highly doubt it. If you're considering this game, make sure you have a top of the line system *and* a system that meets the "recommended" specifications listed on the box flap (and not just the "minimum" specifications). I played Half-Life2, Far Cry, Doom 3, the entire Call of Duty and Medal of Honor series, and a host of other games on my system and have not had any problems until now.

The fan on my video card burned out about 1/3 of the way through (not sure if stress caused by the game caused that, or if I had a bad card). I had the manufacturer replace it (it was still under warranty), and the game ran fine for a while but is once again freezing up and showing distorted graphics. I tried swapping out my video card with a different card, but this game only seems to run on the handful of cards listed on the box flap. I looked around, but many of them seem to be discontinued. I tried a 512 mb GEForce 7600 (which is not a supported card), but got weird distortion in the graphics, so I put my old card back in. I don't really want to spend $80-$90 on an obsolete card that I'll only use for this game.

I'd be interested in suggestions (short of dropping $$$ on an entirely new system).

Seems like a fun game (I'm already up to level 8), but I'm about at my wits end and may have to ditch it entirely.

good game but i bought it and then when i was surfing the web i saw that fear multiplayer is available free off of the fear site. so if you just want multiplayer then don't buy it because you can get it for free and they email you a valid cd key and can play with people who bought it and its all free.

Simply the best game I've ever played. This game has the best AI I've seen yet and the plot is deep and complex. Towards the end I felt a lot of sympathy for "Alma", and I some ways this game is a little like the movie The Ring. Play it, you won't regret it.

Fear is the sort of game I've been waiting for, amid a sea of lukewarm shooters and forgettable sequels. I found my Athlon XP-3700 with a 6800GT was able to run it acceptably at good old 1024X768, which was good enough for me.

The story was confusing at first, but the mystery of what was going on kept me moving. I don't think it spoils anything to say that one of the characters was based heavily on the little girl from The Ring. The plot expands and builds on the premise, to a conclusion that is wide open for a sequel.

The gameplay is state of the art, with enemies that are fast and smart, and for once plausible sci-fi weapons beyond the rank and file you normally see in shooters. The game plays like the city levels of Half-Life 2 mixed with a horror story, and it's well balanced, giving us slow periods in between the action levels.

The atmosphere, however, is what compels it. I believe the game is supposed to be set in the modern day, but I felt it was more a near future, with a lot more going on than we're seeing on screen. Definitely a must-play.

this game was AMAZING. i never usually play pc games, i only played halflife 1&2. but a friend of mine was talking about this game called FEAR. i listened so intently to his explanation about it, that just HEARING about this game made me buy it. this game had my skin crawling... it is MUCH SCARIER than doom 3. in fact, it will spook doom3 off your hard drive. i get so scared sometimes that i will have to quit the game to gather my thoughts about what was going on. key "boo" moments had me yell out and jump. the gameplay itself is fantastic. from the great graphics to the matrix like slow mo to the awesome story line. this game was a hit to me befor ei even played it. get this game. it is a must have.
