I have only recently bought this game, but I couldn't be happier with the gameplay. This is a great addition to the Resident Evil series. The story is a bit quite too linear for my liking though. I'd rather it be one great big story, but I'm still happy with the way it turned out. It's a very addictive game! Rent or buy? I'd buy it if you are a Resident Evil fan. If you are kind of unfamiliar with the series, still buy! Just kidding! Rent it first.

In a word this game is awesome. anyone who doesnt buy this game is not a smart game player. This is harder than all other resident evils and is ultimatly more rewarding. It takes time to master, but once you do this game is freaking awesome.
A must have!

I've always been a huge fan of Resident Evil. This is definitely a must have in the series, it's not a money maker or a quick fill in. Outbreak tells the story of the civilians of Raccoon City trying to escape the unexplainable nightmare. This game brings new light to the Resident Evil franchise. Online play makes the game so much more real. People do what they want to do and respond how they want to respond. The environments are breath taking and the game play is unmatched. It's the only Resident Evil I've played that has a good reply value, with 8 playable characters plus 31 characters to unlock. It's not just online either there's a scenario mode which you can also unlock new characters, levels, movies, photos, music, and a couple other things... he he! All I have to say is play it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
Hmmm...

This is my first Resident Evil game. It was pretty good, but a little underwhelming and as you play the game it gets a little boring and expected. Zombies get boring after awhile, at first it freaked me out. "Ahhh! Zombies are after me!" But, they are everywhere and it's the same thing, so they got pretty boring. Still, I like the puzzle solving but I hate it when there are items lying around that you don't know if you'll need or not. For example, there is a lighter laying around. I don't pick it up because I have a key, a herb, a gun and ammo in my inventory already. Later a policeman dies and drops a lighter and a shotgun and tells you to let out the gas on a fuel truck and burn the zombies. Wow, it's a good thing I didn't pick up that lighter and waste space, I thought.
The graphics where awesome and phenomenal and realistic. The game was also realistic. You can get chewed on by zombies while you are reloading your gun, and shoot them in the head to get off you. When you bring up the inventory screen, you can still get hurt.

You all know that all the Resident Evil game are hard and annoying. So don't be surprised when you pick this up. The game is very hard but more fun then the other titles. I like the idea that they set the game into segments. It makes it a little easisier. It's also cool that you can play with several different characters with different stuff there good at. The graphics are good and the gameplay is a little sluggish though
( Not a surpise) But you have to go back and play the levels more then once with all the players to successfully beat the mission. Because only one of them specializes in locks and say your somebody else you can't open the lock untill next time you play with that other guy. There's quite a bit of stuff you need to do in each level so it will take some time. As for the online mode it's ok. If you end up with a bunch of people not knowing what there doing it sucks but once in a while you get a good team and it's pretty fun. If your a Resident Evil fan but if you don't like the RE series or and horror games then this game won't change your mind.
cant take controls and bad without online

I really have to hand it to Capcom for making teamwork the cornerstone of gameplay. In every room that you reach, this game hammers home the message that you have to stick together and work as a group. When jumping from one rooftop to another, you may misjudge the distance and fall short. Thankfully, a teammate can pull you up.
Even before the game commences, you'll find yourself coordinating tactics with your soon-to-be companions at the character selection screen. In a similar vein to an RPG, each of the eight playable characters that you can select brings completely different abilities to the table that you must factor in. Do you bring a lock-picker? Someone with extra inventory spots? Or rely on firepower with a weapons expert?
Unlike the other games in the series, zombies can pass from room to room and are often found in packs. Taking this newfound hunting prowess into account, Capcom has implemented a handful of new techniques that players can use to survive. You can slide under beds, hide in lockers, and even repel a zombie attack by forcing their head away from your neck with enough breathing room to raise your pistol and shoot them directly between the eyes. You'll even find strategy in the reloading of weapons. For instance, a box of shells takes more time to load than a clip. As annoying as it is to watch your character get munched because he couldn't load the rounds quick enough, I really like this aspect. It makes you keep an eye on every little detail.
Where Outbreak excels in engrossing multiplayer and creative gameplay, the overall design of the game is very odd. Rather than creating one lengthy quest that players can really sink their teeth into, Capcom opted to break up the game into five separate scenarios that are roughly 45 minutes each. If you die, you'll turn into a zombie for a brief extent (and yes, you can attack your teammates if you like), then will be dropped out of the game. Sadly, you can't re-spawn. You either have to wait for your friends to finish up, or find another game to enter. While scripted controller commands are offered, it doesn't support voice chat at all or keyboard functionality in-game. Someone's head should roll for this!
A good addition to the RE family

I haven't tried the online part, but I look forward to it. This is a review of the single-player gameplay.
The concept of playing with three A.I. characters is unique in this type of game. Although, it is not done as well as it could have been. The characters are not exactly geniuses, and you can't coordinate with them very well. But, they are a help, and this game is a change from the usual RE games. The combat is the same as the games preceding Resident Evil 4. You cannot move very fast, or dodge, or aim. It is somewhat difficult to fight. But, many of us are used to it, and the learning curve isn't too bad for those new to the challenging (some say crappy, but I won't take sides) controls. I liked the music, especially on the title screen. Most of it just blends into the background, or it just wasn't there, I didn't really notice. The voice-acting is somewhat weak, and the characters can get annoying. They say things like "Dear God!" and "I don't wanna die!" repeatedly. The graphics are pretty good. The opening scene got my attention, showed how the crisis came to be, and looked good. The cutscenes are well done, while the graphics during the rest of the game are decent for the Playstation 2. There is little variety in the enemies; they are mostly zombies. Some are difficult, like the parasite-mutant boss, but there are different levels of difficulty, so you can play on easy if you have trouble. You cannot save permanently. If you save, you return to the title screen, and when you load, your save is deleted. I guess that is supposed to add to the whole multiplayer feel. The major problem I have is the long load time. It takes about ten seconds to load in between rooms, and about 15 seconds or more to load after a cutscene. Overall, this is an interesting new concept for survival-horror, and I recommend trying it. Most likely, the multiplayer part of the game adds to the value of this game, so take that into consideration if you have the proper equipment to go online.
Several months later...
I finally got a network adapter, so I've tried going online. It has added new life to this game. The people I worked with were quite a bit smarter than those AI characters. But, it can be difficult to communicate with them. You can chat before the game starts, and you have a few set things you can say like "Go!" or "Help me!" or people's names, but you can't actually type. So it's hard to strategize during the scenario. Working as a team was still worthwhile, though. We helped each other when we were under attack, we shared, we solved puzzles together. In one level, friendly fire was on, and my partner suddenly went nuts and turned on me and the other players. He came after us with a shotgun. We stood no chance with our handguns and knives... So I died, turned into a zombie, and went after him. But zombies are really slow, so my teammates died as well. It was a little sad, but it was also an interesting twist. The zombie experience is pretty fun, but short. You succumb to the virus or your injuries within minutes. The multiplayer feature adds a star to the score of this game.
I recently discovered costumes and characters in the Collection section of the game. You get points when you play, and you can spend those points to buy various costumes and NPCs to play in. They each come with an extra item, which range from an antidote pill to some extra handgun ammo. Also in the Collection are movies, music, and pictures to buy.

Just a question, everyone. Can you play with 1-4 players offline, using only the game & a (multitap, etc.), and NOT be online in Outbreak 1 & 2?

This is basically a good game that could have been great. The main issues that keep this from being a great game are the long load times and the fact that it is often difficult to figure out what it is you need to do to complete a given level. Also, because there are a limited number of preset responses, such as "help!" and "what's going on?" you end up feeling especially annoyed when you are stuck and the impatient AI characters keep running around repeating the same phrases over and over. I suspect this would have been a fun game to play online, although I also suspect the online support has probably ended because this is such an old game. I love the concept of this game, especially the real time gameplay whereby zombies keep coming even when you're reloading, which feels very realistic and authentic. I also hope Capcom does not ditch this idea completely, but rather that they continue to hone and improve the shortcomings of this game for a much better next-generation version, possibly even with headset support and being much more massively multiplayer online and DEFINITELY NOT SCENARIO BASED. It needs to be more of a free-flowing game, possibly quest based, with character building and players being able to group with others by CHOICE to survive, not being required to start in a group of 4 from the beginning that you HAVE to do every scenario with.
