Grand Theft Auto: IV is a very solid game. The offline story mode is fun, but tends to get very repetitive at times. There is too much, "Go here, kill them, escape without dieing" style missions. As well, there are a lot of things that fans of past GTA games will find disappointing about this game. Some of them are:
- No firefighter, police, taxi, or ambulance side-missions
- Not a very big emphasis on property ownership
- No swimming underwater
- No controllable airplanes or jets (only helicopters)
- Not a great selection of vehicles; you'll see the same 20-25 or so basic cars for the entire game
- Difficult aiming system
- No "L2" or "R2" side views while driving cars; must use the right analog stick to look around
- Vehicles are difficult to steer from the start; no "driving skill" as seen in GTA: San Andreas; must make use of the R1 handle brake to make sharp turns at higher speeds
- Not many interior locations. Those you can go into are either small or virtually pointless
- No robbing pedestrians or shop owners at gunpoint (i.e. they do not drop money when held up)
- Cops are too powerful. They will blast you with a shotgun if you have even one wanted star. However, once you get moving and elude them the cop chases are great
Some of the better things about this game that I've noticed are:
- MUCH smarter traffic system; cars will attempt to steer out of the way if you are coming at them head-on or fast from behind; traffic cars use blinkers; cops are very smart and will use PIT (fishtail) maneuvers and spike strips (very detailed) to stop you
- Car accidents are simply incredible. They are detailed with an unbelievable amount of 'realisticness'. If you roll your car the body of your car will be damaged uniquely in the locations that got hit; If you hit a pole your hood will wrap around it; If you scrape a car the paint from the other car will stain yours, and vice versa; hitting pedestrians will leave a dent/smash mark EXACTLY where the pedestrian made contact with the car, including smash marks on the windshield; cars can be disabled if damaged too much or if the engine receives a heavy direct blow; tires can blow from smashing your car into something heavy/sharp, steering sharply, or gunfire
- Explosions look amazing. Fire in this game looks like the real thing, and explosions are the same with insane detail
- Police wanted level is VERY realistic. In the past games you would have the same wanted level no matter where you were. Now, there is a flashing range on the map where cops are *looking* for you. If you get out of this range then cops will call off their search after a short while and you'll lose all wanted stars. Of course, more stars means a greater police search range, but it's all good. Changing cars also will deter cops away from you and make it harder for you to be found.
- Hijacking a car or stealing a car is now a process. If you steal a parked car Niko (the main character) will smash the window if the car is locked, sit inside, and then proceed to hot wire the engine. When stealing a car that is occupied, the other drivers will often fight back
- The water graphics are jaw-dropping. When you fly the helicopter at sunset over Algonquin (Manhattan) you would swear that you were watching TV of an actual helicopter flying over New York. The glistening water looks great.
There are a lot more 'good/bad' things about this game, but all of them basically balance each other out. When one thing was taken out of this game it seems like another great thing was put in.
The online gameplay is very, very fun. You can play with up to 16 people in a free-roaming city. And yes, the entire city is freely open with all building interiors and traffic/pedestrians while online. There are also a lot of mini games online like Deathmatch, Race, and a few more. Free-roam seems to be the most popular by a longshot, though.
In all, this game is awesome. If you liked GTA III, GTA: Vice City, OR GTA: San Andreas you'll LOVE GTA: IV.
I've had nightmares that resembled this game

Walking around a city full of people who are all the same person, react the same way, tons of buildings and stores but they're actually just cardboard sets.
I cannot believe such an unfinished game was put out at such a high price on two new great high end gaming systems. Did they fire the people that worked on San Andreas? This game is empty and depressing to play, the characters are annoying morons, the controls and physics are AWFUL, the shooting is boring after 5 minutes and NOTHING HAPPENS IN THIS GAME AT ALL.
I have about 13 hours playing time clocked and a good handful of missions completed and its THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER, its pitifully dull. I was really shocked at the lack of content and wish I bought something else. Speaking of such past being able to play PS1&2 games and MGS4 there isn't anything worth looking at on the PS3, should've gotten an Xbox360, or a Wii.

I really don't think this game was worth all the hype - sure its good and an excellent addition to the franchise but I was expecting more from Rockstar especially some celebrity cameo voices as with previous versions but sadly none.
4 stars overall
GOOD all around game

If you like Grant Theft Auto you already bought this game, but for those who are new too this well let me tell you very simply, this game has beautiful graphics and great free roaming gameplay that bring tons of variety too the table. You got assassin missions, chasing missions, stealth missions this game has it all and thats why these games sell soo much because you get bang for your buck, game is about 30 hours long and longer if you do side missions and with the addition of online play youll definetly get your moneys worth in entertainment in no time. and PS3 version runs really great and the online play is silky smooth. It had some issues online the first 3 day's of release but it was server issues and not ps3 issues, so if your thinking of getting something that will last you more than 6 hours of entertainment for your 60 bucks well this is a good choice, soo order it and ill see you online.
THE GAME IS UNREAL!!, but did expect a little more

my personal pro's & con's that stick out since I've been playing (45% complete)
PROS
very detailed and interactive envirorment, Still Hilarious, Good Story, just started playing online..wish I hadn't cause it's so addicting, LAZLO's still on, not as many annoying missions, the cell phone feature is excellent,
Con's
Driving is much more difficult, not as diverse a world as San Andreas (but much more detail), Not as many places (bars, clubs, etc) as I thought there would be, MUSIC is really lacking in my opinion,
Overall the game is great and VERY addicting. I expected nothing less, but was hoping for a bigger enviorment with a few more features and places like San Andreas offered. It is in a sense as people are saying GTA 3 to a grander scale. I was expecting the best of all GTA's but on a grander scale.
Very good but maybe a little overrated

The best way to compare this game to Vice City or San Andreas is like comparing Burnout to Gran Turismo. If you're just looking to have some fun(with the help of things such as jetpacks and crazy car stunts)Vice City and San Andreas will destroy your social life. But if you're looking for a more realistic experience GTA4 and Gran Turismo would be your choice.Personally I'm the type of guy who would rather play Vice City & Burnout, which is the reason why I've been having a hard time agreeing with the majority of reviewers on this one.
I'll start with the good first.I don't want people reading this to think I'm bashing this game, because overall it is really good.I just don't think it's as perfect as some websites are making it out to be.
The first thing that will really make your eyes open is when you arrive in Liberty City. The city has a life of its own,and it's unlike anything I've ever seen in a game before.Having lived in New York for ten years I really appreciate all the work Rockstar put into the city.
Another strong point for this game is the story. It reminds me of something Martin Scorsese or Michael Mann would direct. The pacing is perfect and you'll run into all sorts of characters throughout the entire map.
The graphics and sound are also impressive. You and the city move around with absolutely no clipping or lagging. The sound effects are incredible. It really helps the city come alive, and the weapons (especially the M16 & AK) sound like the real deal.
Rockstar also borrowed some ideas from games like Gears of War when it came to covering and aiming. While being able to cover was a huge step forward for this series,I still had some problems with aiming. There are a lot of missions where you're inside closed areas (such as warehouses) and you have at least half a dozen guys firing at you,and it doesn't help when the aim is still locked on a target you already killed.
And for a interesting addition, this game allows you to go bowling, drinking (you name it) with friends you meet up with throughout the game. While it may seem cool,I found this to be pretty annoying by the time I was about halfway through the game because my cell phone would be constantly ringing. If you don't choose to hang out with all of them they start losing respect for you little by little, but if you do choose to say yes every time they call the game gets repetitive in a hurry.Besides,I can watch TV or going bowling with friends in real life,so I don't understand why it plays such a large role in this game. But I guess if you're a fan of mini games like pool you won't seem to mind as much.I just feel like it can interfere with the actual missions too much.
The only thing that really gets on my nerves about this game is the driving. This goes right back to my Gran Turismo/Burnout comparison. Some of the car chase missions nearly drove me nuts because I'd take a sharp turn and my car would lose all control while the target escaped.I don't know why most cars control like a school bus,but I hope it's fixed for the next installment.Oh,and good luck making a U turn.90% of the time you'll end up smashing your car up or hitting a cop thanks to the camera.Steal yourself a nice sports car or a bike every opportunity you get, because they're the most stable ride.
Again,I hope people won't take this as a negative review.I just know everyone and their mother has heard all the great things about this game,so my goal was to be a little more down to Earth and point out the things gamers may or may not like about GTA4.If you like realistic games, this is right up your alley. If you don't but you're still itching to play this just know there will be a learning curve.
A blast to sit down and play

I have played the GTA's in the past, but never too in depth. I wasn't sure if I was going to get this one until I saw it had Multiplayer.
First of all the single player storyline is great! Its like you are playing a movie and everything you do effects you in different ways later in the game. The controls aren't perfect and some of the graphics aren't next gen per se, but they definatly do not take away any of the games' coolness that it adds from every other aspect that is thrown at you.
I played Multiplayer for the first time last night, more to test it out for a few minutes than to sit down for 2 hours, but after getting into a game I got so engrosed in what was going on that when I looked up it had been 2 hours!! The multiplayer alone is worth getting this game!! The multiplayer is very dynamic in that you don't just hop on and start shooting people in deathmatch (although you can). There are many other online options and games that allow you to customize how you want to play online, which is different from most games because their online mimics exactly the same game offline.
My Scores:
Gameplay - 5
Audio - 5
Graphics - 4
Controls - 3.5
Multiplayer - 5!
Replay - 5

Ok, this is the opinion from a person who had never played a GTA game before. This game is great, the design is amazing and the best game play experience that I have ever had. I have not been lured by GTA series before because I do not like to be the "bad guy" in a game, however, Niko is not a "bad guy", he is just a guy with bad luck and that has not taken the best choices in his life. This game is more like a really good movie.
Pros:
1. GAMEPLAY
2. Music is fantastic.
3. Story is fabulous.
Cons:
The only one so far is that graphics could be much better, but this game is not about the graphics, despite the fact that is a "next gen".
Best PS3 game by far

This has got to be the best game in the world ever made. Graphics are unbelievably awesome. Gameplay fun and challenging. Missions make sense. Better storyline than san andreas. San Andreas just plain sucked in the storyline. I don't mind the russian at all. The strippers ain't bad looking either.
More hilarious commentary on American culture

There seem to be a great deal of reviews either praising the enhanced physics and realism of the new GTA IV, or lamenting the lack of variety of sub-missions and extra activity featured in earlier GTA's. I think both points are valid, but what tips the scale for me, and makes GTA IV a very good game, is the incredibly generous 15 or so radio stations, which has always been a highlight of the franchise for me. In particular, I was really looking forward to their treatment of the post-9/11, war on terror era we find ourselves in, and I wasn't disappointed. The events of the last seven years are all over this game, and it's great! Seems possible it may have even been a factor in the return to Liberty City, perhaps. As usual, it's refreshing that representatives of the entire political spectrum are torn apart, but their depictions of the far right media and the brand of reactionary, twisted nationalism they pedal, are inspired.
I was initially a little disappointed that there just isn't as much to do in Liberty City as San Andreas. The scope and imagination and constant surprise of San Andreas is gone, but in it's place (is it a question of disk space?) is a far more realistic, and cinematic, experience, with greatly improved physics, and I'm now glad they've gone in this direction. Driving is an entirely different experience now. Cars handle a lot more like cars, and other drivers can be killed in accidents, brilliant! Find (or create) a corpse, shoot at it and note the detail as limbs move as limbs really would. There are countless examples of this vastly improved detail, I won't go on. It all just adds up to more of the thrill that comes from exploring an open city that GTA has always delivered better than anyone else.
Adding to the realism is a compelling central character. Even if Niko Bellic's struggle is a little cliched, I am thoroughly enjoying watching this flawed, compromised individual strive toward realising the moral potential he clearly possesses, but hasn't had the opportunity to achieve. And references to the growing history of GTA itself are a nice touch, with minor character's backstories frequently involving San Andreas and Vice City, as well as numerous references to the advertisements featured in past episodes.
