Very original

I really enjoyed this game. The voices of the characters were so well done. It had many puzzles that were quite challenging. The main character could take on four forms with different skills for each. The other main character, a gargoyle, who was quite interesting. He helped her solve puzzles and collect energy. Each scene was beautifully detailed. The only drawn back, there were a few glitches in the game. You may get stuck in a spot and have to restart that level again. The main frustration for me was the ending. I have not gotten there yet. It is a very tough boss fight. I loved everything else about the game.

game tries to be "cool" but falls way flat. the main girl voice actor is incredibly annoying, its the first time i ever skipped cut scenes i hadnt seen before. her dialog is just so lame, they tried sooo hard to make this game "hip", but ended up being about as hip as my grandmother doing the macarena

Primal: Average but beautiful.

Primal at its heart is a run-of-the-mill linear adventure. It's obvious the developers were going for the interactive movie experience. The gameplay in Primal is average but it's the story and the beautifully animated cut-scenes and quality voice acting that elevate this game from cookie-cutter adventure to an entertaining game. This is one of the best looking games on the playstation 2, with character models and animation unequaled by any other PS2 game. In fact the character models in this game are at least as good or better than most next-gen games. If your looking for a deep engrossing movie-like experience but don't mind just average gameplay, you should check this game out. Now that it's only $10 for a new copy, it's well worth the price.

One of my Favorites

I just reordered this games since I wore out my old one, playing and replaying it. It does what videogames to best (for me) which is that it takes you to an interesting world/worlds with amazing visuals, challenging puzzles, a good story-line, exciting action and characters that you really like.

I had a lot of affection for Jenn and her little gargoyle companion, Scree. You can tell a lot of care went into the design and creation of Primal.

One of PS2s best!

I purchased this game when it was first released and must have played it at least 10 times. This game is excellent and deserves so much more credit than it has been given here. The story that unfolds throughout your quest has to be one of PS2s most thorough and enticing! No where did this game come up short as it has excellent controls, innovative combat style, unique characters, an excellent replay value and a variety of awesome environments to hold anyone's interest!

There are two protagonist characters, Jen and Scree, who will not only provide you with great gameplay, but will also entertain anyone with a good sense of humor. They are very well developed, so much that the audience will learn to sympathize with each of them equally. Each has their own strengths, weaknesses and abilities which motivate the plot differently as you must play both simultaneously to be successful on you quest to fight against Abbadon and his reign of darkness. Aurella, who needs to restore balance to the Nexus and save Chronos, guides you through the four corners of the Nexus and provides you will the necessary keys to prevail in the end.

The worlds themselves are unique and beautiful in their own right. Each is occupied by a different race and holds a separate power that Jen must learn to wield in order to survive and overcome the obstacles only found within that world. Scree is always at her side to provide additional strength and another perspective to help Jen figure out the correct course of action to fulfill her destiny. You will journey to the lush, dark, wintery forests of Solem where you discover the horned race of the Ferai. Journey next to the deep blue waters of Aquis and meet the Undine, a mer-like race. Journey off to the grey, dreary, wet and gothic towns of Aetha, where the Wraith aristocracy is on a vampiric hunt for blood. Last, travel to Volca, the fiery world found deep within a volcano to overcome the Djinn race that is the most fierce of all and provides Jen with the final essence needed to restore the Nexus.

Many interesting items wait to be discovered such as tarot cards, lodestones, energy fountains, keys, and most importantly, rift gates which allow you passage from one end of a world to another.

If you love fantasy games and are looking for a unique adventure, give this one a try as I am sure you will be completely satisfied and appreciate everything that the game has to offer.

If you don't fall asleep...

So, I'd heard both good and bad things about Primal. I bought a really cheap copy so I wouldn't waste too much money, just to be safe, but to tell you the truth, I wish I hadn't spent that $3 bucks.

Yes, the graphics are pretty good, if nothing new; and yes, it is very tempting to parade around as a little midget gargoyle dude, but it's just not worth the first 45 minutes of the game.

It is so incredibly boring to start out with, I'd recommend it to anyone with insomnia or other serious sleeping disorder. 10 minutes in and you'll be fast asleep. If you can, through some miracle or act of witchcraft, stay awake long enough for the game to pick up slightly, you're still not out of the not-so-proverbial woods. Very, very slowly, almost like watching grass grow, you'll notice some increased action/excitement, but just when it starts to get mediocre, it's over.

Despite the Yawn factor, the midget a la gargoyle makes the game. Hell, I could have done without the girl all together. Most of their banter is forced, and you just want to shout at the screen "Gee, thanks Mr. and Mrs. Obvious!". However, if you get into that special place where you are very easily entertained, play it for the sole purpose of watching a bit of "Waddling Gargoyle Walk."

Good graphics and characters, crummy gameplay

In this game you play as Jen, a heavy metal girl who's boyfriend has been kidnapped and taken to the "demon realms". Jen is taken to these realms by Scree, a gargoyle, and told that she must restore order to the realms in order to save her boyfriend. There are four of these realms, and the graphics are very good, the environments are very creative, and there's a lot of exploring to do.

The first realm is mostly a forest at night, though there is also a city, coliseum, underground caverns, etc. I didn't care for this realm too much, it's very maze-like and I spent the whole time having no idea where I was supposed to go or what I was supposed to do when I got there. The second realm is underwater, and you'll spend the whole time swimming. It's also very tough to navigate as you have to go from place to place and it's a big puzzle as far as how to get there. At least the mission was straightforward, you have to achieve a number of objectives one after another. The third realm was by far my favorite, you travel through an incredibly gloomy village and eventually wind up in a marvelous castle. It was worth it for the scenery alone. The fourth realm was so-so, it's a bunch of underground volcanic caverns and you'll spend a lot of time trying to get from one place to another. The challenge in this level is fun though.

Probably the biggest problem with the game is the combat - it's the most basic button mashing imaginable. Just press R2, over and over and over. By the end of the final boss battle I though the middle finger on my right hand was going to fall off. You basically get one weapon on each level and use it throughout, so there's absolutely no strategy when it comes to combat. Though to be fair, in the third realm you could run away from your enemies, then get a powerup from your gargoyle pal, kill one enemy, get another powerup, repeat until they're all dead.

The story is another problem - you start out trying to save your boyfriend, but spend the whole game trying to restore order to the demon realms, which doesn't seem to have much to do with the original story setup, and left me feeling totally uninvolved. They should have just ditched all the boyfriend stuff and instead come up with a different setup that would have made more sense and been more relevant.

Overall, good graphics and characters, lots of (often frustrating) exploring, and repetitive combat. It's a pretty game and some portions of it are certainly quite fun to play, but overall the bad outweighs the good.

Primal means glitch, i hate it when a game is filled with glithches

I am not going to waste time, i hate this game! not so much the game play but this game is filled with glitches, and it is very boring the kind of game that gives you a headache that last until you turn it off and then sweet relief. i don't have time for that kind of incompetence by games designers, i did not see this through i got stuck some where in a pool of water and got fed up, or! i did not save often so i lost all the other save points so don't over write just in case laters folks.

What crack were you smoking when you thought this game was good?

I bought this game after reading all of the reviews on here. I thought, wow, super, this game will be awesome. I played it for an hour and was bored....maybe this just isn't the type of game for me. Maybe I should have given it another try. Maybe it really is horrible. All I have to say is rent it. Save your money. Don't be stupid like me.
