Fun But Tiring

Unlike some i have seen no glitches in this game and find the story and great graphics enough to keep me interested. However this game quickly turns from action to puzzle solving and gets a bit boring after the first level. Great graphics and good controls but being a fan of fast paced shooters i found it a bit less than i hoped. RPG fans will love it and while im not saying i dont like it i am saying be sure of what you like before purchase.

For this to be the first game from Studio Cambridge(developers of the successful Medievil series)for the Playstation 2, I must say I'm really impressed with what they've accomplished. Being a fan of the more Darker third-person action adventure games out there, I was drawn to play Primal and I wasn't disappointed. This game reeks with atmosphere. You can't help but be enchanted by all the realms you visit. They are absolutely, undeniably gorgeous. Really giving the architecture and graphics of some Xbox titles a run for their money. You play as Jen who travels to four different demon realms with her friend, Scree, in search of her boyfriend: Lewis. The more you play as Jen, the more you find out about her and the sooner you find out that there is more to her than meets the eye. I have to admit, I'm intrigued by her character and want to know even more about her.
This game is slow-paced, which will prove taxing to those with lil or no patience, but if you can manage to see things through til the end- You'll get a rich and rewarding experience. There's unlockable DVD extras to be had and more.
Primal sports greatness and is sure to be a sleeper hit. Even more, it's sure to be to be a classic game in your PS2 library. Primal is one compelling, wildly addictive game worth recommending to all.

Waste of time and money

This game has gorgeous graphics... and that's all. What's wrong?

1. You have very little control over your character. You can't do anything but walk for the longest time. Once you finally get a knife, you have very simple attacks - L1 for left attack, R1 for right attack. yawn.

2. You can't read the damn messages because they are in font size 2. And I couldn't find a setting for this. If your TV is less than 50" you are going to have problems. Plus, important messages (like how to fight) pop up at inopportune times (in the middle of the fight) in the small font size so you end up missing them entirely.

3. No clear concept of what the hell you're supposed to do next. Nothing. You can press triangle and talk to the other main character. For this action you will get a simple one line "hint" and spend the next 15 minutes wandering around, waiting to stumble into the right place so the computer will take over and show you another cinema.

I feel bad for the development team on this game... obviously they spent a lot of time and money on the graphics but they overlooked the basics that make a game enjoyable, hell even playable. Rent this one, don't buy it. After renting you won't --want-- to buy it.

If you want to play a game that delivers on the promises of this one -- dark, gothic, kick ... graphics and environments, awesome fighting -- go buy Soul Reaver (1 or 2, both are excellent, but the first was more enjoyable.) This game does not live up to the hype. It doesn't even meet minimal expectations for a video game.

Good but Glitchy

I agree with all the reviews that this game has great voice acting and environment, so I won't beat a dead horse.

The problem I had with this game were some of the glitches I encountered. For example, a couple times when I switched characters, I ended up in a blank space outside the game environment and I had to save and reload my game. Also, there were a few times when the characters "stuttered" and didn't say the full sentence they are supposed to say (good thing I used subtitles).

I worked as a game tester and I know that these errors are considered critical and most companies would never release a game until these problems were fixed.

Just not enough action...

I was glad that I rented this game first before going out and buying it.With a name like "Primal",you'd think there would be alot of action, fighting and gorey moves(like BloodRayne). Alas, this is first and foremost a puzzle solving game. While there is fighting later on in the game(after solving three or four puzzels)it is not very fun.Using the shoulder buttons I thought was a bad idea, and the battles get very tedious.

The story however is very good and a diffrent take on the whole

good vs. evil plot;Order and Chaos needing eachother for everything to exist. Both Jen and Scree were very cool characters that made for a funny team.On the flip side though,I never really cared what would happen to her rocker boyfriend "Lewis" (stupid name;maybe they did it on purpose?).I guess I'm sexist,
but I've never really liked games were the girl has to find/rescue the guy.

The graphics are top notch beautiful, and look very life-like.
Bonus points went out to this game for voice acting with both Jen and Scree.I was shocked to learn that Hudson Leick did the voice of Jen,(actress who played Callisto on Xena) which was a nice suprise. And while I don't know the name of the actor who voiced Scree,I'm pretty sure it was the same person who did the voice of Vorador in Blood Omen 2.

The game's soundtrack however failed miserably;mainly because there was hardly any music at all.The only music that is played is during the battles;and after the battle ends,so does the music...returning to complete silence. That might not be a bad alternative however since the battle music is Lewis's rockin' pop metal garbage.(I just don't like him)

To end, this is a game you should definatly rent first. While it has some great suprises for a puzzle game fan,it is FAR from the best action game you could play.

Dark and Gothic Fantasy

First off I would like to say I am a big fan of Darker Games, like Devil May cry(1), Vampire Masquerade and other games like this. So when I started seening previews of this game, I got really excited because, Devil May Cry 2 was a huge disapointment, I't couldn't hold a candle to the original. So after being depressed about that game, I was glad to see that primal was coming out and it actually looked good. Cause I really like darker games.
Anyways, back to the game, I've spent about 2 hours on the game so far and have to say that this game is totally story driven, and what a great story it is, it's about a girl named Jen who gets a violent wake up call to her demon self. It starts out with a scene at a club where her boyfriend is playing at(he is the lead singer of a metal group). Her boyfriend totally gets freaked out by this really strangly shaped person in the crowd and leaves the stage. Back in the dressing room he meets up with Jen and she tries to reassure him that everythings okay. When they leave the club, the stranger is right behind them and reveals his true form.......

This game is very deep, and submersive, it really keeps your attention. Gameplay the controls are kind of hard at first but you figure it out. Graphically this game shines, its very beautiful, and some of the effects are simply amazing. The worlds are big, and the layout is breathtaking. I really like how Jens pants are shiny, thats a really cool effect. The voice acting in this game is great I especially like Scree's voice, it is perfect for him. I also like Jens voice it reminds me of the actor that did the voice of April from The Longest Journey (a pc game).
When ever Jen gets in a fight, this kick [word] hard rock music kicks in and the fighting is awesome, you can preform combos and fatalities to finish off her enemies.
I love everthing about this game, and would recommend this to anyone who likes dark fantasy games.

I told people that I liked Silent Hill 2, GTA: Vice City, Final Fantasy X, and Devil May Cry (the first one!)...and they recommended this game.

It's a true to form adventure game. Not necessarily another slasher. You don't have to slash if you don't want to. There's plenty of story (Funny characters and real humor), puzzles, beautiful scenery to keep your mind involved in this game. I give this game 4 out of 5 stars. Recommended.

If you like slashers where that's ALL YOU DO. Go elsewhere. This is mostly an adventure game, not a first-person slasher/shooter.

Oh, and the music (sounds like Goth Rock and classical scores from the movie Abyss) and graphics are excellent!

A classic that PS2 owners must have.

This is a very unique game made by the creators of the MedEvil series. It is a story about a girl who finds out she is more than what she believes: she is part demon, and she is the only one who can save the world.

The two primal forces, order and chaos, must be at a balance in order for our world to remain consistant. Chaos tries to break the balance, giving himself more power. Jen (you) is sent into another realm, the "demon" realm, in order to repair the damage. The reason she is sent is because she is a unique person - she is half-human half-demon, therefore she has powers that no ordinary demon has. She can morph into other demon forms. You are also joined by a demon made out of stone (Scree) to help you through your travels.

The gameplay is very challenging, because there are a lot of puzzles throughout the game. This isn't one of those games where you play and go through the motions; this is a game where you have to think. You have to solve puzzles by switching between the characters and your demon forms.

The fighting can become a little tedious, where all you have to do is bash the back shoulder buttons. Fighting can become quite annoying because the block button is very clumsy, and you lose a lot of health.

All in all:
the plot is very interesting.
the gameplay is medium-hard.
the replay value is high, because there are a lot of unlockables.

For people who want a challenging game that involves action and the use of the brain, then this would be a great game for your collection. For those who don't really like thinking games, but prefer like some action, you could get this game with a guide to help (but that ruins the purpose). If you are looking for a game that is purely action and is full of gore, don't look at this game. Look for BloodRayne, or something like that. This game is for people who love solving puzzles.

I loved this game!

I really loved this game becuase it had a really awesome battle system and wonderful relms to wonder though. I bought this game becuase it looked cool and beat it in 2 weeks. I would suggest getting a strategy guide becuase there are hidden tarrot cards throughout the different relms. My personal favorite relm was Aetha -- at least i think that is the spelling, it is a world of wraiths and the houses and mansions are beautiful. The other relms include : the nexus, mortalis, aquis, aetha, and volca. In each of the different relms Jen, the main character gets a new demon power and each is more powerful then the last. The game really begins to pick up in the end of solum so don't give up if you are bored :)! Give this game a chance! :)

What can I say, this is a classic.

Even though it's not very old, this game is a classic, the adventure is truly a blast, I've beaten this game over 5 times in less than the 2 years I've owned it. The basic plot of this game is that you (Jen) and your side-kick (Scree) explore four different highly detailed realms. Forest, water, haunted, and fire, is what I like to call them, can't remember the real names of them, and my PS2 isn't connected so I can't check, but basically those are what the reamls are. They each take well over an hour to beat, even when you know what you're doing. Another great feature in this game, is you get to control your side-kick "Scree" whenever you like, so basically you have 2 characters to pick from, having to switch to progress in the game. Ifyou don't already own this game, definitely pick it up, it's worth every penny.
