A little change coming your way....

Mortal Kombat!
Sure its neat that they have the good movies, etc. And the background, etc. has been developed quite nicely, but you have to unlock everything in this game. I mean everything. You only have Liu-Kang and Kung Lao to start with for either Single, Ko-op or Vs. You have to unlock the other characters for Vs.
You also have to unlock all the character's abilities, from their combos to their special abilities, by defeating enemies and getting EXP points (aha... so it's a RPG like X-men Legends you say?). Plus you can get other special special abilities such as wall run, swing, etc.

The best part is the interaction of the environment and ALL the fatalities to choose from. Very gory good fun.
It's a shame that you cannot pick from more characters to do the story, and if you're playing Ko-op, you cannot continue with just one character, you need both players to continue. So you pretty much need two games going to be able to finish the game. You cannot unlock everything with just one player either, there are special things that require Ko-op to complete.

While its fun to work with a buddy on Ko-op, it's not available online, and you have to work together. If an enemy is outside the current area of the sceen, you have to wait for your friend to move enough to be able to attack it. This becomes extremely annoying when trying to unlock things and requiring an enemy to do so.

Overall: It's a fun game and will take a long time to play and get everything.

Good diversion

If you are looking for breath-taking visuals, awesome gameplay, involving story, and suberb voice-acting, play God of War because Shaolin Monks is neither of those. However, it is very, very fun. The different combos that you can execute are fun to watch, though they get very repetitive real fast. The puzzles are...unique...but very frustrating because the cutscenes tell you absoltely nothing that you need to know.

About those cutscenes....the voice acting is HORRIBLE. It is amazingly cheesy and lame. However, most cutscenes only last 30 sec to one minute, so the agony is not that bad.

I rented this game a few days ago, and I am already 50% done. That might not sound so impressive, but I work two jobs and go to school fulltime...meaning that I only play like 1-2 hours per day. So that means that by putting in about 4.5 hours, I am halfway done. As you can tell, Shaolin Monks is a very short game.

Despite its mediocrity, Shaolin Monks will probably keep you entertained until that one game that you have been waiting for all year. Give this game a chance and play it. But don't buy it until you play it...trust me.

Mortal Kombat has gotten a whole new look!

Shaolin Monks takes place during the Mortal Kombat 2 timeline. The opening scene shows Shang Tsung, Goro, and the other evil enemies escaping to Outworld in pursuit are those warriors from The Order of Light, allies Lu Kang and Kung Lao. After a nearly fatal disaster, the duo make their way to Outworld where the action begins.

WEEEEE!!!!!!

This is definetely the best Mortal Kombat game I have ever played, and I own all of the games. I love the change from just fighting people to a huge action-adventure....adventure. Not only is this the best game of the series, it's also the goriest. It gets a 5+ for blood'n'guts. Hack people in half vertically AND horrizontally with swords and other pointy instruments, bludgeon enemies with a rabbit till they explode, cleave people's faces in half with a hat, break peoples limbs and snap their neck, set people on fire until they melt into a pile of blood and entrails, slowly hack off people's limbs, impale people on catapults and fling them at buildings and make them explode, crush heads, every move involves copious amounts of blood flinging everywhere, and TONS more. BUY IT. I'm brainwashing you. BUY IT. BUY IT. Trust me, you'll love it.

not too many choices for single player :(

the reason i dont rate it a 5 is because i have 2 big complaints for Mortal combat shaolin monks..This is by far the best fighter outhere,"THE" BESt" mortal kombat ever to hit a console...period!!! Its like the god of war of fighting games...for the single player mode, and im gonna go straight to the point...i dont have a partner to play with, so i gotta go solo on this...THE SINGLE PLAYER STORY MODE SHOULD HAVE BEEN JUST LIKE THE KO-OP MODE WITH THE HELP OF THE COMPUTER!!!!!!!!! i dont see why not!!!!!! ALSO THE VERSUS MODE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE FOR SINGLE PLAYER....IM UNLOCKING ALL THE SECRET CHARACTERS AND I CANT DAMM USE EM!!!!!!!! i dont expect my wife to be the second player, she doesnt like video games,, so im screwed!!!!! MIDWAY, TAKE NOTES ON THIS AND DONT SCREW THE NEXT GAME WITH THIS!!!! OVERALL, a total masterpiece but this issue messes it bigtime......

Basically, your Liu Kang/Kung Lao and you have to fight your way from the end of Mortal Kombat 1 to the end of Mortal Kombat 2 in a NON-CANON story. The fighting is cool and Kung Lao's air juggles are awsome, but that's about all I can say for this game.

Easy with friends and very hard by yourself. With a friend you can beat this game in a day (I did). Alone, if your anything like me, you'll get bored and frustrated after a couple of hours and say "Forget this game! Deseption is better anyway!"
But if you do manage to beat it you'll be rewarded with the added characters of Sub Zero and Scorpion, who don't work well in a free roam environment.

the best sequel to part one of the movie.

this game gives a better understanding and ending than the mortal kombat 2 movie.
graphics are cool. you can defend your relm with 4 characters, lots of moves, fatalities, combos, and there is 2 player mode.
the best mortalkombat game since mortal kombat 3 trilogy.

A different take on Kombat

I recently played the Demo for this game and I will say it is rather fun. I would prefer to have been able to select more than the two characters as over the years I have had different characters who are my favorites. The game does continue with the Kombat blood and gore action savagery although much of this is blacked out on the demo version although the audio is played. The action that occurs sounds rather grim! Shoalin Monks actually appears to be a very modern take on the old classic game Double Dragon where you have the two characters take on an entire mob. As in Double Dragon you can pick up and use objects against your foes (swords, rocks, and even skulls). Many of the old Kombat fight arenas are the locale for story line even those that were just added in Kombats last installment MK: Deception. I am eagerly anticipating the release of this game as it is definitely a fun game to play as I find myself playing the demo constantly. This is a mature game so parents don't buy it for the kids

SHAOLIN DISCIPLES

Mortal Kombat, next to Street Fighter, is my all time favorite fighting series and has been since Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Already with a slew of games in a decade long catalog, it's about time they focus on two of the most important fighters in the entire series. In the spirit of "Mythologies", "Shaolin Monks" offers background stories on Liu Kang and Kung Lao after the first Mortal Kombat. The graphics are a little dusty but the brand-new fighting system more than makes up for it. You don't even need to pick up the manual to drop all sorts of ass-kicking on Oni-demons, dark wizards, and Shang Tsung's guards. On top of that, the fatalities are more raw than ever, with each person getting 5 to choose from. Don't worry though, if you get sick of the shaolin disciples, you can choose between Scorpion, Subzero, and Baraka as well. Instead of adding new characters and making ish complicated, "Shaolin Monks" chooses to pay tribute to the classic characters that made us love MK from the jump. For the dedicated MK fan, it's a brand new system of fighting, but with a nostalgic touch.

Nice Change of Pace!

This game follows a similar formula to "MK Mythologies: Sub Zero", except the gameplay is much more well done and enjoyable. You play as Liu Kang and Kung Lao (or Scorpion and Sub-Zero by unlocking them). The story takes place at the end of the first Mortal Kombat tournament and proceeds through the tournament of "Mortal Kombat II" in Outworld. The game has a lot of replay value, though the final boss (Shao Kahn) is very difficult to beat if you're not fighting as Liu Kang ( since he fires projectiles the fastest). Now that the price is down to $29.99, the game is more than worth it's price! Even those who aren't fans of Mortal Kombat will enjoy this, but only the fans will catch the nostalgia from the old "MK II" game.
