So much right in one game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 6 / 8

I've never played a game like this before in which they get so much right. This is the game I've been waiting for for years. The sheer customization in this game blows every other MMORPG on the market out of the water. I mean, admit it, when you're playing a Massive Multiplayer game you want to be unique in the crowd, well Monster Hunter gives you that option with all the customizable armor and weapons available to you.

The combat system, though awkward at first, is brilliant. Once mastered it becomes extremely fun and exciting. It's a blast slicing veliciprey clean in half or striking monsters dead just as they're leaping at you.

While I could go on about what else I love about this game I think it's time to hop on what I'm not too crazy about.

Well, for one, the single player mode could have been much improved with a storyline of some kind. While I do enjoy playing it, the singleplayer game pretty much just an extended tutorial preparing you for online play. A blessing however is that your singleplayer character works just the same in online play and you keep all your armor and weapons collected in in the singleplayer mode.

Another issue I had was that you had to take missions in order to go out and explore/hunt. It would have been nice to just go out and hunt at my leisure or mine/gather materials to enhance my weapons and armor. You're often given enough time to complete the mission and hunt/gather but it's always a monkey on your back in the end.

Dispite those two flaws this is an excellent game that I would recomment to anyone.

This is a good solid game, although its not perfect its still great. On the week days monday-friday theres around 200-300 people playing online, and over the week a good 500. So theres a pretty good fan base. This game is more like diablo than anything less in my opinion. You get quest got out with 3 other players hack in slash and complete the quest. Its also cool because no other game as based its theme only on dragons and dinoaurs. It would be cool if they made other monster hunter thats a mmorpg like ff11. Just a thought. Great game and for the price its all good, you be spending countless hours on this game, and it goods way to fast.

Nothing is better and more addictive than Monster Hunter. If you get board offline then, go online and never be bored. I play it all the time. So just go and play it.

If you think capcom dosnt make good games then you need to check out this game. It should be the best game of 2004. Lots of fun.If you dont like games that take for ever then i dont think you will want to get this game. Rent it first. If you have broad band then i highly sugest this game. I here people get this game and 2 or 3 others for themselves but only play monster hunter. It is because it is so adictive to play. I cant seem to put the controler down. There are so many twists.

Even if it is a great game it still has flaws.
Flaws:
-no multiplayer offline
-the camra is not the best
Greats:
-Online is so fun because you can do even more stuff then offline
-monsters have weaknesses too
-there are so many weapons and armors it is hard to get them all

So overall I give it a strong 5*'s.

a must have for every gamer

monster hunter, this game blew me when i played it.
theres so much you can do in the game you'll never be bored with it,you can custumize your character, create your own weapons and armor from the parts of monsters you've slain, and can play online!
the graphics and sound are outstanding, the gameplay is fun and the controls are easy to learn.

I have not tried the online play, but the single player missions are plentiful and fun the game overall is really well done and very fun.

this game in my opinion is a must have for every gamer.

When I got this game at a store no one knew anything about it so I was a little worried at first. When I started playing it it was a little hard to get the gontrols right but then the game got awsome. I like how you can hunt and or fish for food when you get farther in you can hunt dragons and upgrade yourself and the world is huge. Overall I love this game

One of the best games i have played in a while.

Monster Hunter is Capcoms most recent online adventure for the ps2. If you have read reviews about this game in a magazine or on a website, chances are they said this game was outdated and boring. This is not true at all. Look at monster hunter and you will see the landscape Capcom has prepaired, true, some parts look a little painted on, but its still an awesome view. Now take a look at the monsters, which are the focus of the game. They look wonderfully detailed and (for the most part some of the later wyverns are grey =]) very colorful. Monster hunter's graphics are far from outdated. i've seen better but that does not mean they are junk. Now on to the important stuff, the game play. Monster hunters controls are solid, the lack of camera rotation that is automatic is a + in my opinion as it would be annoying if your sitting there and all of a sudden the camera moves and you cant see that dragon about to run you over. The games sheer customization level is awesome. Tons of cool looking weapons and armor are out there waiting for you to collect the materials for them. Then online after getting your rank to level 13, you get "hard mode" quests. The materials in this let you make even stronger weapons and armor. Now, the monsters. They come in all shapes and sizes ranging from velociraptor like things to Boars to, of course, dragons (or wyverns as the game calls them.) They are all wonderfully detailed and very cool to look at. Some, like the basic Kut-Ku, are not much bigger than you. However later on you will find the gravios which is a gigantic rocklike wyvern whos hard armor reflects your attacks! There are also a couple dragons which are in hard mode only, one of them is so huge that all you can see is scales. (aka he is huge.) A cool thing about the wyverns is that some of them have body parts you can damage and/or destroy. Many of the wyverns can have their horns and tails removed netting you extra items if you carve up the part (or for some body parts win the level.) Monster Hunter is a great game but it does suffer from some flaws, the most annying of which is the little oh-my-god-I-think-he-saw-me action your character performs whenever a large creature sees them, this can prevent you from getting out of the way in time when the monster launches an initial attack resaulting in severe pain. Also annoying is the fact that if you get hit by certain attacks multiple times (or even a couple attacks once) will make your character dizzy resaulting in, you guessed it, more severe pain. Also annoying is whenever you eat something or use a potion you character does a bizarre I-feel-powerful action that, if your healing in the middle of a battle resaults in paaaaaaiiiiiiinnnnn... Some of the quests are also a little unreasonable, like being forced to carry an egg all the way across a level, slowly, and you will drop it if A.you run to much and run out of stamina B. gewt attacked my a monster or another player online, C. you use an item or D. you unsheath your weapon. A few levels have you taking these annoying items across entire levels 3 times... T_T Also, if you hope to get your character into the upper league of players, you will HAVE TO BE ABLE TO PLAY ONLINE OFTEN. You must play online to raise your hunter rank and it takes quite a lot of devotion and time to get your HR anywhere above level 5. However despite what setbacks this game may have it is still a must-have for any ps2 onliner. Plus, its free to play online so you don't need to worry about paying a monthly fee. My final statement? BUY THIS GAME.

Control Scheme

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

I have been playing this game since it was released in the United States, and I would like to correct some of the errors that I have seen in these reviews. The main error that I have observed is that people seem to think that the controle scheme is fataly flawed, that it inhibits the player, this is not true. Monster Hunter is a game where you have a lot of control over your character, most would say to much control. For example, you have to control both the direction of your weapon: Right stick, and your camera: D-pad. Unfortunately most people are used to games where you do not have to do much multitasking on the controler, Monster Hunter however forces you to do this. Honestly, I had to relearn how to hold and use a controler to play this game, but, it was worth it. Now, here is a list of errors I have observed in previous posts, and my nearly 4 years worth of experiance view on them.
Error 1: You cannot control the camera and move at the same time.
This is true, if you hold the controler with index and middle finger on the sholder buttons, and use your thumbs for moving and pressing the face buttons. However, as I had to learn, if you "claw" the controler, that is place your left index finger on the D-pad, your left thumb on the left stick, and your middle and ring finger on the sholder buttons, you will find that you can control almost every aspect of your character at once.
In the rare case that you dual claw, you can press and interact with every button on the controler while still controling the joysticks. As I said, it takes some time to learn, but it pays off in the long run.\
Error 2: Combat is sluggish/You move and attack very slowly.
This statement is not an error, per say, but the mentality behind it is. The game mechanics were made extreemly ballenced, in fact,(this is something that in my personal experiance is rare,)you actualy do about 4-10 times as much dammage on each hit as the monsters in this game do. Asside from the realism of your armor actualy preventing rediculously stong attacks,(for example in many games you(armored) take as much dammage as your unarmored enemies), the speed at which you fight is quite realalistic, think about it. If you had a 6 foot long 2 foot wide slab of steel on the end of a handle, how fast do you think you could swing it around? You are not Cloud, do not think that you should get to fight like him in every game.
Now, most of the reviews here have been right, this game has a lot of potential, and much of that is demonstarated in later titles of this franchise, but it is not a bad game, just a hard one.
Happy Hunting.

This game is a lot of fun to play, especially online. You get sucked into the game. The controls are a bit hard at first but you get used to it after a while. This game is the best!! The graphics look so real.
