This shouldn't count as a sequal!

First of all, this game is far too short and easy. The first Max Payne took me several weeks of near constant play to beat, this one was over in one weekend. Second, the "plot" sucks. It gives us no story at all for the first two parts and then wraps up with a non-sensical ending. My new girlfriend is dead so now I can accept the death of my wife. After killing a million identical "cleaners", Mona gets wacked and he's happy about it. Give me a frigging break. Oh yeah, I guess I should warn that there are spoilers in this review, though I'm not sure what there is to spoil. Third, when I shoot an enemy at point-blank range with a shot gun, I want him to fly backwards not fall towards me. The gunplay in the first one was so much more realistic, why the hell did they change it. Fourth, bullet time isn't really all that different from the first one, except that it's sepia toned and you spin around when you have to reload. And fifth, Max's personality has totally changed from the first game, (not to mention all the comicbook actors). All the humor has been drained from his character, leaving him dull and unengaging. The only good things about this game are that you get to play Mona (she does very nice cartwheels and somersaults) and there aren't any exasperating "follow the trail of blood in the dark" dream levels. Overall, if the developers and writer would have spent more time creating a worthy sequal to the incomparable original, they would have my $49.99 in a heartbeat. As it stands, one rental period was more than enough.

TERRIBLE

Who would even think about such a sad sick game like this. The first game was horrible these games should be band. Who would want to play games about murdering babies. People who like games like this make me sick and dont deserve a Ps2.

PS2 version sucks.

This is a near perfect game. For the PC that is. The PS2 port is nothing short of a disaster. Graphics are scaled down, extremely slow frame rate, and load times that will make you want to rip out your hair. Worst of all, you won't be able to make use of mods for the PS2, like you can with the PC. Do yourself a favor and buy this for PC. You won't be sorry.

Could be better

this game was just horrible....like its so easy and just incredibly short.theirs only like 4 parts...compared to the 8 in the 1st...the graphics are choppy and the plot sucks... im lucky i just rented it..dont buy it its not worth it....i expected alot more from rockstar seeing as they put out the great GTA games. The only good part was that their wasnt those retarded dream levels where u stay on the trail of blood......just horrible

One of the worst games I have ever played...

This was one of the worst games I have ever played (it really doesn't even earn 1 star). Your movement is very (and I mean very) choppy and there are even more cut scenes than Metal Gear Solid 2. These cut away scenes are not a bad thing per say. They work well in the Metal Gear games and games like Dead to Rights where the scenes load quickly and keep the story moving. However, in this atrocity the slow story line combined with the slow "loading..." makes Max Payne very bad for the impatient gamer. To sum up this game, it's choppy. Your character's movement is choppy and the constant jumping to cut scenes is choppy. It's not a good game. I was really surprised seeing such a bad game from Rockstar. I would not recommend this game. Get Manhunt instead, it's a lot more fun and the character control is very good.

I have MP2 on my computer and, to tell you the truth, it's one of the best games I have. So, when I rented it on the PS2, I thought it'd be better... I thought wrong. This game is, to tell you the truth one of the worst games I've played... period!

Not worth the money

This game is not worth paying for. If you played the first game then you have played this one. It is true that there is a new story and there are some new gun configurations but the gameplay and graphics were not improved at all. The whole bullet time thing is not enough of a reason to purchase a game. When I went to sell it back they wouldnt take it so i basically had to pay them to take this joke of a game. Waste of time and DVD discs.

An interesting idea, but not good enough

As much fun as running in slow mo, and diving while firing with cinematic flourish, can be, Max Payne 2 is, quite frankly, an exercise in frustration. The game has numerous good points, but in the end, those good points are weighed down by what can be a rather plodding, frustrating and monotonous game.

To give Max Payne 2 its due, there are positives that need to be mentioned. The environments are amazingly detailed, and Max is able to interact with most of it (though after a few times, turning on and off a water faucet loses its charm). Additionally, the game makes use of audio cues, providing another level of realism. The enemies are difficult, with good aim and a penchant for dodging and surprising Max. And, the game features a number of slow motion action options, including so called "Bullet Time" which not only gives Max an edge but can provide for some visually interesting sequences. Visual effects are without a doubt this game's forte.

Visual effects though, can only go so far before a player asks for more, and it is at this point at which Max Payne's defeciencies become obvious. While the environments are beautiful, they are in the end repititive. There is none of the free movement available in Grand Theft Auto. If Max is placed in a building, then you're stuck in that building. In the end, the environments seem to blend together. Additionally, the levels themselves are often the same. Max is asked to do the same type of activity repeatedly.

The second major problem is actually two problems interlinked. It is at time very difficult to figure out exactly what Max is suppoused to do. At times, cues as to the correct course of action are unavailable, and players can find themselves trapped in certain levels, with no way to advance. While some players may enjoy the challenge, the agravation of having to reload one's game repeatedly is accentuated by exceptionally long load times, often upwards of 15-25 seconds. When you're having trouble getting through a paticular level, having to wait that long repeatedly is annoying. Additionally, the game has no ability to reload to the beginning of a level. Indeed, if you die without having saved your game for several levels, you are doomed to go back to the last point at which you saved, regardless if that maybe one, two, or several levels before your current location.

Finally, at least for me, the tone of Max Payne was a problem. This game is listed as a film noire experience, but even film noire had a certain degree of levity. While there are certain elements of humour, on the whole I found the tone of Max Payne to be so dark as to be depressing. It strongly effected my enjoyment of the game.

Overall, visually interesting, but once you get past the looks, there is little there.

Severely disappointing port to the PS2

The PC version of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne managed to improve on the first game in some areas and was vastly enjoyable overall, however this Playstation 2 port of the game is severely disappointing. A noticibly terrible frame rate, blurry textures, missing sound effects, an even worse save system, and ridiculously long loading times plague what could have been a stellar game. The storyline, plot twists, and even the once mediocre graphic novel-esque cut scenes are the game's few saving graces, along with the run 'n gun bullet time action that was so enjoyable in the first game, but in the end Max Payne 2's flaws outweigh it's strengths. It's a shame more time wasn't taken to make Max Payne 2 something as memorable as the first game; I really wanted to like this game despite it's flaws, but they're just too much. All in all, Max Payne 2 is still worth a rental for fans who dug the original, but don't expect anything at all great from it.
