All-Action Heroes

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 55 / 58
Date: October 20, 2006

JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES is an arcade-style actioner. There's no deep thinking here, just twitch movement and slam-bang action with some of DC's greatest heroes. People looking for something deep or something more along the lines of a true RPG need to look elsewhere. This one is for the kids -- and for dad (and moms) who want to be superheroes with their kids.

We bought the game yesterday when it came out. So far, my 9-year-old has spent hours on it. My 17-year old has been there as well (giving up time on MySpace to hang with his little brother during fall break), and dad and mom have suited up with the caped crowd as well. As a general across-the-board game the whole family can play and have fun at, JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES succeeds.

The game is for 1-2 player(s). It has a preset course that doesn't allow you to choose heroes, but you get to cycle through them in pairs. There's even a feature that allows a single player to shift characters in the pair. Players playing together can do the same, swapping characters over and over as they go along.

The primary choices for the missions are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter. It looks like there are possibilities to be other superheroes as well, but we haven't gotten there yet.

For the younger crowd or players wanting a no-brainer with awesome graphics and cool cut-scenes, JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES really hits the spot. This is the perfect game to get the kids for Christmas, then sit right down with them over Christmas break and be a kid again yourself.

More than meets the eye.

As a previous reviewer pointed out, there's nothing groundbreaking to be found in this game. It was built on Snowblind's Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance game engine; it's the standard smash and grab game and the game itself is kinda short too. If you're only interested in beating the game once and putting it away, you're sure to be disappointed.

However, if you're a DC fan you'll find the game's story interesting and if you play the game over, continuing to develop your characters as you go, you'll find the game MORE CHALLENGING and MORE FUN! You can't fully develop ANY of the character's powers and abilities playing the game only once. There are also lots of perks for certain characters (Superman) in the unlockable game items that REALLY enhance the gameplay.

If you buy this game, plan to play it through MORE than once to get your money's worth.

If you own this game, finished it once and put it away, get it out and play it again with the saved characters from the last game! You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Surprisingly good

With Marvel making huge splashes in movies and video games, DC has began to follow through, with some very good results. Justice League Heroes allows to play as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Zatanna (yes, Zatanna, fishnets, top hat, and magic spells and all) as you take on Brainiac and other baddies. Unlike other comic licensed games, Justice League Heroes isn't necessarily a generic beat 'em up. Instead, the game sort of follows the X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance formula by injecting a sense of strategy into the gameplay along with some RPG elements. The environments are wonderfully done, and there's a great roster of villains to take on (including Doomsday), and while the voice acting doesn't include any of the talent from the hit animated show, the actors here (including Ron "Hellboy" Perlman as Batman and one time Spawn Michael Jai White) do a great job. Each heroes' powers are nicely implemented, and the game looks good to boot, not to mention that the game is surprisingly easy to pick up and play. The only real drawbacks to Justice League Heroes is that it's easy and a bit on the short side, and why of all Justice League members is Zatanna included over heavy hitters like Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, Firestorm, Hawkgirl or Hawkman? Despite all that, Justice League Heroes is a more than solid game that does it's license justice (no pun intended), and is more than worth picking up for any comic fan looking to get away from Marvel Ultimate Alliance for a while.

Underwhelming

For all the pre-release talk about how this game was going to try and make each hero both distinctive and evocative of their comic-book inspiration, this game is basically a reskinning of a standard-issue arcade punch-and-shoot-em-up. Superman can fly, technically, but really what he does is sort of hover and geriatrically creep forward through the air. Batman and Superman take the exact same amount of damage from getting punched in the face by the same robot. And so on. For someone who hasn't played this sort of game before and really likes DC Comics, it's a decent enough effort. (My five-year old thinks it is fun.) For anyone who had even modestly higher expectations, it's a disappointment.

Well worth waiting for ...

When I first heard that we wouldn't be able to choose our own characters in the first few levels I was a little ticked, but as I progressed towards the end of the game, I understood why as you do need to know how to play all of your characters. This game will have you play two characters at the same time. If you don't have someone to play with, the computer will be your partner. With one easy click of the up direction you can switch your character throughout the levels. As for graphics, I think it looks good overall. I'm not hard to please. As long as it doesn't look like Atari 2600 animation, I'm satisfied...although they could have made Wonder Woman a bit more sexyier in the face.

I didn't notice anyone else telling you all the characters you can play so here it is. The original start up is Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern (john stewart), Martian Manhunter and Zatanna. Through the course of the game you can collect shields which are used as points to buy alternative costumes for your characters OR you can unlock other Justice League characters. Those characters are Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Huntress and two other Green Lanterns Kyle Rayner and Hal Jordan. Its a good selection of characters but the problem is that there isn't enough time to build up these characters strengths giving them the "boost" combos. There are only certain levels where you can choose to play these characters and you don't want to face big opponents with characters that have weaker powers. Some of the enemies you'll be facing... The Key, Zazalla the Queen Bee, Braniac, Gorilla Grodd, Killer Frost, Doomsday, etc. I won't spoil the ending by giving you the main villain if you don't already know it. Overall, I found the game to be incredibly fun. The storyline is mediocre, but its a blast to live out your fantasies playing these characters and use their powers. The game is playable again. I concentrated my efforts on building up the powers of Wonder Woman and The Flash but it'll be cool to check out the maximum strengths of the other characters. I was never really big into the comic book series but I have always been a DC fan of the Super Powers, Super Friends and Justice League cartoons so I think any DC fan can appreciate this game. Here's hoping we get a sequel soon!

For those of us who aren't video game masters

First, for you hard core gamers.
This game probably won't interest you much. It's quite simple and quick to play (about 8hrs for two people). It just won't be very challenging for you.

For the rest of us.
My 16yr old son and I finished this game in about 8hrs or so. He's the game master, I'm just the dad, but it was fun for both of us. It gave us a chance to play something together, since I can't memorize 20 or so 6-key combos that it takes to play most action games today (the ones my 16yr old plays. I just don't have the memory for it.

The basic idea is that you get to try to save the world using the heroes from the Justice League (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and some others). You tackle each level in pairs of superheroes. You can play with another person, or you can control one hero and the AI can control the other. You can switch between the two characters too.

It's mostly a matter of bashing your way through lots of enemies (robots and such) and wind up fighting a big boss every few levels or so. The animated snippets in between levels helps to fill in the gaps of the story line.

There are some ways to get through levels that you have to figure out, but it isn't anything you can't find out on some gamers website. Some of the 'puzzles' are a matter of pressing a sequence of buttons on your controller within a limited amount of time. Others are just specific things you have to do in order to complete a level which aren't intuitively obvious.

Good Things:
-No memorizing of hideously complicated button sequences. The melee combos are XXO, XOX, and OXXO. There are only 5 special abilitiy sequences (to get your hero to do stuff like heat vision or throw a batarang). Those 5 sequences are each 2-button combinations. Not hard at all, even for me.
-The levels (about 18 or 19 altogether, including sublevels) are short, unlike some of the mazes that pass for levels on other games.
-Your heroes gain levels and 'boosts' that you can use to amplify the effects of your attacks, make it harder to kill you, or help your health and energy levels recuperate faster.
-You pick up gold shields along the way, which you can cash in later to change a character's costume or unlock a new character.
-Once you are done playing the game for the first time, you can play it again while keeping the stats and upgrades of your heroes from the first game.
-The animations are cool and there's a little humor here and there to make things fun.
-You can smash up just about anything in this game. You can pick up stuff to bash opponents with (picking up cars, for example).

Bad Things:
-In about half of the levels, you don't get to choose which two superheroes you'll use. They are predetermined and all you can do is switch between them. There is only one level in the whole game which requires a specific hero in order to finish it (you need Flash on one level in order to successfully complete it). We should be able to choose on each level what hero we want. Hopefully the game designers will fix this flaw in the sequel (there's ALWAYS a sequel, isn't there?)
-Wonder Woman is very strong, but limited. Her distance attacks consist of a tiara-toss (that's just sad) and using her lasso to pull in opponents. She doesn't have much to work with, I guess.

Nitpicking:
-Some of the characters didn't look too good. Batman's face was kinda dufus and Wonder Woman's face looked like a zombie. Hey, I said it was nitpicking, didn't I?

Favorite Characters:
-Superman. Probably the most powerful character in the game once he gets powered up a bit. Heat vision, superbreath and superpunch are great. I can kill most bosses with one long blast of heat vision (after Supes is powered up a bit).
-Zatanna. Magic user, who when powered up is as powerful (if not more so) than Superman. Even better, one of her spells turns the enemy into a bunny rabbit! Of course, then you have to kill the bunny, but no game is perfect.

Overall, I love this game and look forward to playing it through a few more times to get all the heroes fully powered up.

Great game...still a lot of lost potential...

After about 8 reviews, one can pretty much get a feel for the games pro's and con's...but I loved playing this game so much that I felt compelled to come write a review and praise the game makers. I think this game is a must for any Justice League fan, but it COULD have been an amazing game for anyone...if they put a little more thought into it.

The pros:

First off, this game plays WAY easier than Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I loved this game, where as all the text windows and details of MUA just bored me. I liked the simplicity of things.

Graphics. The smooth graphics and animations of the game were top notch. You can't ask for anything more. Some people are complaining about the top camera view, but I thought it was fine. Plus you can zoom in for a different perspective anyway. The top view graphics feels like a gauntlet game, which is a good thing. It makes for a fun fighting game that I can come in and play without a stupid walkthrough book to tell me what to do and where to go. Sometimes people just want to bash up monsters without puzzle solving.

The powers are also wonderful. They didn't go overboard here, but they gave each character some mega cool powers that are animated great. My favorite is batman's bat beacon and superman's heat vision, but there are definitely some great moves here.

The con's

Like everyone else says...it SUCKS that you can't choose your characters every stage!! At first, I didn't care, because I liked playing each one...but as the game went on, I developed my favorites, and it stunk having to go play with others. Everyone has their own favorite character, so it bites we have to wait to use them. By the time you can actually pick your characters, you are nearing the end, so you can't really develop them...and need to just go with your strongest few to win the game. I get that the movie clips tie into the 2 characters, but just find a way to make the clips so they aren't depended on using 2 specific characters.

I love the characters, and unlockable characters, but what is the point in getting to play with them if you can't play with them whenever you want?? I unlocked all the characters, but I couldn't really enjoy them because I could only play with one new one. It takes a while to "master" each character's powers....so by the time you've mastered them, you're back to being forced to play with someone else...and next thing you know, the game is over.

This really leads into the game being too short. It wouldn't be so bad to have the game be short if you could just play it again with other characters, but you have to go back and play the same scenes with the same heroes. It's just dumb.

I really hate this trend of buying powers. I hate having an energy meter. Whatever happened to the good old days when you got so much experience, you learned a new power? Or how about being able to have all your powers from the start? The game is so short, you can't really power up any one skill too much because you need to invest in combat and health. I hate having to decide where to invest my 1 point. Lol. Like I said...if the game was a LOT longer, then it wouldn't be so bad because you could really build your character. By the time this game ends, only 3 characters can really be strong.

Summary

Awesome game, but I hope for a sequel soon where we can pick all of these characters whenever we want. It would also be fun to have some kind of arena where we could somehow duel. I'm not sure off hand how to make that fun, but I'm sure it could be somehow. Or maybe make the game more like gauntlet...more monsters so you could enjoy using all your powers...and longer battlegrounds.

GREAT WONDER WOMAN HERO!!! Fun-- but replay value ???

The Justice League Heroes game for PS2 is great fun! Nice graphics and all the super heroes are pretty much like they should be (meaning they are equipped with their individual powers, plus some special ones). Players have the option of setting the game to Easy, Medium, Hard, and Super Hero so even inexperienced gamers can play all the way through without getting too frustrated. The game's camera doesn't swing wildly, so it doesn't cause motion sickness or screw you up while you're battling bosses.

When you start the game you have access to play as either:

** SUPERMAN
** BATMAN
** WONDER WOMAN
** THE MARTIAN MANHUNTER (J'on J'onz)
** FLASH
** GREEN LANTERN
** ZATANNA

However, the game doesn't let you choose which character you can play with. In the one person game, the two super heroes are chosen for you in each world, but you can switch between the two. As you progress through the game, characters gain experience and power and you can equip certain special powers they each have--in addition to the powers they're each known for. You also collect shields that you can use to buy different costumes for each hero and you can buy other heroes like:

** HAWKGIRL
** TWO DIFFERENT GREEN LANTERNS
** THE HUNTRESS
** AQUAMAN
** THE GREEN ARROW
(I might have forgotten one of them).

Again, these unlockable characters can only be chosen at certain stages, even after you buy them, which kind of sucks.

I'm a huge WONDER WOMAN fan, so I love playing as this hero. Snowblind studios really did this character justice! First off WONDER WOMAN can:

** FLY - like in the Jutice League cartoon series
** TIARA - her tiara can be used as a projectile, damaging distance objects or enemies
** MAGIC LASSO - the magic lasso has a number of different uses: WONDER WOMAN can temporarily bind enemies with it and use it to rope enemies in the distance and snatch them to her (like Scorpion in Mortal Kombat). She can also use the lasso to catch an enemy and swing him around and around in a circle--over and over, like a wrecking ball--to smash other foes or objects in the way
** FLYING CHARGE ATTACK - she spins around, flying forward like a missle, destroying everything in her path
** BRACELETS - last but not least, her fabulous bracelets! She's the only character that has this ability to deflect projectiles back at the shooter! By pressing the BLOCK button, Wonder Woman blocks all bullets, plasma rays etc., sending them back towards whatever it is shooting, causing damage. And if you can angle her just right, projectiles will go towards a different enemy

She's also as strong as Superman, so they didn't skimp on her. The sound effects for each of her special powers, like the tiara, are great too! You can also buy two different outfits for her, TOGA and BIKER STYLE. Near the end of the game, when the team gets closer to the final show down with Darkseid, Wonder Woman spins around in the cinematic and her outfit turns into the warrior outfit with the eagle headress, sword and shield (I think this was from one of the comic book series called "Crisis On Inifite Earths," but I'm not sure). This is like a bonus so you can't change the costume and you can't choose this warrior outfit for other stages. BTW, in case you were wondering how to change the outfits back to the default, just select the outfit they're wearing and press deselect (I couldn't figure that out in the beginning and it's not in the booklet).

Now here's the reason why I didn't give this game a perfect 5/5 score. Once you complete the game, you can choose to continue and this allows all the characters to retain their experience and health points, as well as their special powers. You also keep all the purchases you make, like outfits and hidden heroes. However, you can't choose which character you want to play as! Like the beginning, you start off with pre-chosen characters and progress through the game in the same fashion, so you can't play as a different hero-in a different stage. Maybe it's because I have proceeded on the easy setting or something, or there's a hidden cheat code that allows you to choose whichever character you would like to play with, but so far I haven't figured that out! Not sure if this applies to the two player game, but this is not good. It would have been better if you can play as other characters in different stages, to see how they would fair in the game and also keeps things interesting. Hopefully it's because I haven't figured out how to do that, yet, but if players can't choose, the game becomes redundant.

Another thing I've noticed is that I can still collect shields, even though I've bought everything there is to buy. Maybe this means that there are more hidden characters or outfits in the game and I just haven't accessed them. Not sure!

But aside from all that, JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES is still enjoyable to play, particularly for fans of the comic or tv series. And it's much better than the JUTICE LEAGUE CHRONICLES, that came out several years ago, for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance.

Disappointing

"Justice League Heroes" is disappointing for several reasons. First, the arcade style seems a bit outdated and due to the camera angle, which primarily has you looking down on the characters, makes you feel almost detached from the game. It doesn't help that your character often blends in with the bad guys, especially in the darker levels. This isn't as noticeable when you are playing as Superman or Flash with the bright red costume but it is a bit of an issue when playing as some of the other characters. You have virtually no control over the camera and at times, when you are fighting next to large objects, the characters are completely obscurred.

Another complaint is the inability to select which characters you will use to complete a mission, especially early on in the game as they are pre-selected. The graphics are decent although the backgrounds tend to be a bit generic and you'll see the same thing over and over. There are essentially no areas to explore outside of the general gameplay area and in fact, you can't access many of the areas due to police roadblocks, etc. This seems almost ridiculous since your character can pick up cars and throw them but you can't move a wooden road block. The voice work is good but you'll hear the same comments repeatedly. The interaction between the characters is also odd. Batman seems to almost detest Superman: "I didn't ask for your help" kind of thing. Superman is a bit smug as well. Ah, super egos.

The game is a button masher for sure and there is very little challenge to figuring out what you need to do to progress. The controls are very easy to learn and combos are typically limited to 4 buttons. There is a great deal of repetition in the enemies you'll fight as well. The first few levels consist of robots, robots and more robots, followed by robots and giant bees...yes, bees. Checkpoints are frequent and you can use them to revive a fallen team mate. The levels are short and the game itself is short. If compared to other superhero games, "Justice League Heroes" is better than most but if you compare to other fighting games, it falls short. The game gets tedious quickly and a single-player game is significantly worse. Glad I did not purchase and only rented.

i actually got pretty close to what i thought was the end when my ps2 crashed and corrupted the saved game. i had to start over at the beginning, but it was just as much fun the second time through, and only slightly easier since i remembered how to beat the tough guys. the flash is my favorite with his pinball/ricochet attack, and wonder woman's block winds up killing anyone who's shooting at her. you can also customize the heroes and build up their skills as the monsters get tougher. the plotline is pretty good too, you go through one villian to find another, etc. overall very smooth and nice.
