Really Capri!

I enjoyed this game and played it twice. I just got back from a vacation in Italy. On our tour we spent a day in Capri and Anacapri. I felt that I actually had been there because the streets were the same, the names of the streets and the hotels and buildings. I knew where I was going because of this game. I even went to the newsstand and the lady was working there that had appeared in the game. I guess they actually used the people on the island to make this game. I even took her picture. This is a very relaxing game and the first one I had played with actual scenery and streets that you could walk anywhere. I loved the game.

'Think of Myst'? I think not!

'Think 'Myst' but in real life', the box art said. Being a big fan of the 'Myst' franchise, I was at first very excited to play the game.
Too bad in turned out to be a tourist game.

'Capri' is basically a slideshow of beautiful snapshots of Capri as you journey through the island to reach your hotel.

True, the original Myst was just 'pitures', but Myst made up for it with excicitng, challenging puzzles, real-life animations, real-life actors, and a wonderful story line. The puzzles in 'Capri' are running errands for other people; navigating is tedious and agravating; moving through the world is not fluid, but eratic. In short, everything seems to play out as an interactive slideshow.

As for the 'mystery' of Capri, you need a great deal of patience to get past the usless errands until you're 2/3 done with the game. At least in the 'Myst' franchise, the stories unraveles with journals and characters as you acess each of the numerous Ages, not in a sloppy jumble at the end.

Being an avid, 'Myst' fan, I was HIGHLY dissapointed when I played this game. Comapring the game to 'Myst' was almost an insult to the series with how horribly the game played and felt.

Patience Required

You're a tourist with a ticket to the lovely Island of Capri. You board the boat, cross the Bay of Naples and take a taxi up to the top of the Island, where a helpful News Agent directs you to your hotel. You thread your way through the noisy crowds of other tourists towards the hotel and are just about to enter when something strange happens. Suddenly, all the other tourists are gone. Your hotel sports a large "Closed" sign and the entire island seems deserted. What's happened? Well, that's what you need to find out.

_A Quiet Weekend in Capri_ is a first person point and click adventure that gives you the opportunity to sightsee on the Island of Capri while you solve numerous puzzles. It's a first effort from the developers, Silvio and Gey Savarese, and like many first efforts it has its high points and its low points.

The game is mainly comprised of a series of 4500 still photographs, through which you navigate by means of directional arrows. Although the devlopers promoted this as a selling point, I thought it was the weakest aspect of the game. As others have said, wandering around the Island was like looking at photos from someone's European tour. Every view and every street looked the same. It was extremely hard to keep track of where you were going, and the in-game map didn't help, as it was too small to read. The area you could wander around in was immense, with very few limitations. In most games, I would consider this an asset, but after having to travel back and forth across the island hunting inventory and locations several times, I was tired of it. It helped to be able to jump directly to several key locations, but not a lot.

The puzzles were a mixture of inventory and figuring out what to do next from collecting clues in conversation and reading. In some places they were really clever. But several aspects of the game made accomplishing your tasks inordinately difficult and frustrating. One difficulty was the lack of variety in the terrain. It was nearly impossible to keep track of what was where, especially in the center of town. Also, locating active areas required far too much wandering around without a clue. You might be told, for example, to find "Villa Belvedere." But without a better address or other reference, you just had to go up and down every street until you stumbled on it. Finding inventory was also difficult due to the widespread search area and the tendency of the developers towards visual overload. You didn't have to pixel hunt, exactly; but after looking at 2500 of the 4500 photographs one's eyes tend to glaze over and it becomes easy to miss stuff. Fortunately, you can turn on a help feature that highlights hotspots, so you can know at a glance whether a scene holds anything of interest. However, I think the necessity for such a feature indicates a problem with implementing the game.

Another problem with the puzzles is that solving them often depends on having or overhearing conversations--but you really have no way of knowing you should have those conversations, so unless you stumble into them you're stuck. Also, sometimes the information you receive is connected to other information in what seems an arbitrary fashion. Once you know the answer, it makes sense. But getting there seems to require reading the developers' minds.

Despite the problems with Capri, I did enjoy the game, which I did not find as irritating and frustrating as some I have played. I did have to consult a walkthrough quite often, just to find out where stuff was. If you are low on tolerance for wandering around, this might keep you from tearing out your hair. Getting through the game took me about 25 hours, most of it wandering until I went blind and had to stop. The first 2/3 of the game are extremely slow; one you begin to unravel the story and figure out what's going on, things pick up and the game becomes far more entertaining. If you have patience, you might enjoy this game. If not, it's definitely not for you.

When I bought Capri I was very curious. This game is unlike any other game I have ever played. Instead of computer graphics, the game uses real life photographs of Capri. Also, this game has no intro. So I found myself starting this game with very little idea of how the storyline would go on. After 1 hour or so of game play I finally found out what the game and the mystery was about. Once I got into it, I couldn't stop playing anymore. It is not such a linear game that I was spoon-fed what I had to do next. It is very much the gamer that has to work out what is going on and where to go next. Many players may not like this and get disappointed.

The layout of the game and the controls are very simple. It is completely mouse orientated with no need to worry about the keyboard. The game also allows you to just explore the isle of Capri without solving the mystery.

The rythm of the game is very relaxed; there is no sense of pressure at anytime. This game is a joy to explore due to its wonderful photograph and the noises you would expect to hear in a town and in the less busy areas. Capri looks to invite the gamers to take their time and enjoy the environment and ambience of the game. Few areas in the game are not open till you have completed a certain task. I would not recommend this game to gamers who like games where there is plenty of action and tension. What appealed to me is the feeling that I was really wandering through Capri and that I could take my time to explore all the narrow and tiny streets and different locales. This game is able to bring the player into a whole new world. Excellent entertainment for all the family.

A most horrible game

This game is pieced together from digital photos taken on the island of Capri. The island is a beautiful place and perhaps it is worth the price simply to wander its roads and trails in this photo format. However, after you have walked everywhere and picked up all the obvious 'clues' you honestly do not have a clue what you are suppose to be doing! I must admit that I did not solve anything that I would consider a puzzle before I quit playing out of boredom.

A journey to Capri

You are going on a journey to Capri. After this game you'll know everything about Capri. The game graphics is made of still pictures (almost 5000!). Navigation is similar to many adventure games: you have to keep clicking to go from point A to B. The puzzles are ok (not very challenging) and there are few for adventure veterans. I finished the game pretty quickly. The second part of the game is really great! So don't give up if you get stuck. The game is worth playing and today it's hard to find good adventure games. My overall impression is 4/5.

I never write any reviews online. Thought I have to do so to save other people from buying this horrible game......basically the game is 2D and not 3D.....just a slide show of low resolution photograhs of island Capri....any rookie can take better pics than those......there is no story and consequently there is no game...icons need to be more professionally displayed as they needed an adult to draw them......you might see on the game pack "THEY ARE FOLLOWING YOU...." I have no idea who the heck are those following me.....game is so lame and bland and it stops when you stop clicking the mouse without any idea why you do so...........the map they give you needs another map to figure out what's in there.......you just see pics of people with some recorded messages that only reminds me of the TOEFL test..........in summary....please DO NOT BUY THIS GAMe and if you did.........throw it away!

I'm not quite sure how well I can do an objective review. It's hard to convince anyone about getting a game. But this game really deserves my appreciation. The graphics are really breath taking and it will not disappoint you. The music is nicely done, fulfills its function well and as a background for the game sceneries is good. Dialogues are in English with subtitles or in Italian with English subtitles. I liked the second option better. This game has a great ambience sound which allows you to soak through the atmosphere of the game. You won't be just an observer, but become the part of it. I highly recommend the island's tour option. It's very useful if you plan to visit Capri in the future. I've read great reviews about this game (Game Chronicles, Just Adventure etc...). Review is subjective thing but I agree with those. This game creates a new standard upon many games will be judged.

Very good graphical adventure

A Quiet weekend in Capri is a very good graphical adventure. The world is composed of thousands of photographs and it is very pleasing to the eyes. The music is great and is, by itself, the atmosphere in this game. Great job on the sounds too. Some of the puzzles can be really hard. Some of them generate real satisfaction and are all very logical. If you get stuck, just look into a walkthrough to solve the problem and then continue without it. Most of the puzzles are simple and easy to solve. Talk to people, grab all the things you can, observe the scenery (which is gorgeous) and investigate the items in the inventory bag. Some of them look really weird! Although there is no pixel hunting, often you might to not to take notice of some important thing... so be careful! If you do like adventure games, this is a fine game for you!!
