Not what a Crash Team Racing fan expected

I have all the Bandicoot series and love them all , both on PS1 and PS2. This game just came out today and I've spent about an hour with it. I was looking forward to this release since I heard about it a couple of months ago.

First of all, Crash Team Racing is the predecessor and was made for the PS1, and is one of my favorite all time games, just a lot of fun. I expected CNK to take it one step further with the PS2 and have an awesome game, however, sadly, I am truly disappointed.

All the elements of CTR that made it great are missing from the CNK, excellent music, fun effects ( confetti everywhere at the end of the race ) and quasi-realistic dynamics of the vehicles. Even though this is a fantasy type racing game, I expected the dynamics of the vehicles to be at least true to the rules of physics ( like they were in CTR). I just don't feel like I'm driving these things and having much affect on the outcome of the races. For example, if you lift your thumb off the gas pedal to hit the power-up button just for a half second, your cart actually slows instead of coasts.. This is hard to explain if your not a CTR fan.

Even if I based my review independent of CTR, I would still give it only 2 stars, the music is monotonous, the tracks are a bit too busy to actually 'get into the race' with, the voice overs are either the same as CTR's or they are just obnoxious, and the driving dynamics, like i said, don't really 'work'.

On the plus side, the scenery is nice. But overall, this is the worst game from the bandicoot series yet. Disappointing.

Get Crash Team Racing too if you haven't already

This is a review from somebody who hadn't played any kart racing games except for the Mario Kart series until a few weeks ago. And I've gotta say -- Crash Nitro Kart is a lot of fun. The whole control scheme with its three boosts in a row takes a while to learn, but that's a good thing, because you can have a blast playing while you are learning. Also, there are so many modes and so much to complete (I just discovered the course ghosts in time trial mode for example) that this game will probably keep you coming back. And, if you really take the time to learn this game and get good, the 'hard' difficulty mode in Cup Tournament mode is a big plus - it is actually hard. It is much more challenging and much better than 150cc in Mario Kart Double Dash.

I bought this game at the same time I bought Crash Team Racing, a 1999 game for PS1. I would recommend getting both. You can learn one game and complete its adventure mode, then move on to the other, then come back to the first one and put to the test what you learned in the other. I've done a lot of that. If you just get one get CTR - it's a little bit better game with slightly better controls, more tracks and more interesting tracks, but I would recommend both.

I agree with "Cole Edwards" when I first played it i was like "this game stinks" but after a hour or so this game ruled, it has over 12 tracks, 18 characters, many battle areanas and, if u get boerd you can create your own areas. There are over 5 new never before seen Crash Bandicoot characters. From Nash (a shark) to Geary (a robot). You can also play as oxide (from Crash Team Racing)This game is also very funny you can unlock movies, which are funny, wich makes this the coolest Crash game made!!!!

I waited 4 years for this game and I'm disappointed!

I bought this game the day it came out and put it on and after going through all of the boards I have to say I am disappointed.

I love CTR and I thought this would be an updated (graphic wise) of the game. Some of the weird weapons are just weird. The green protective shield - you can't shoot it at anyone like before. I hate when the wheels turn and cling to the ground - it feels like you're not even moving. You shouldn't have to power slide through the whole game in order to get some speed. I think there is too much detail in order to keep your attention to the actual race. I loved the snow boards on CTR and the 1 snow board on this game I don't like at all. Too many dips and and the snow coming down is annoying. I never thought they would make another one and when I found out they were I was counting down the days till I could get my hands on it. It's ashame Naughty Dog didn't make this one. What were they thinking!

Don't Go Near this game!

No matter how cool this game looks like, don't ever buy it. When I first looked at it, I first thought it would be like the classic, fun Crash Team Racing, little did I know I would be ripped off. The gameplay is boring, the controls are unresponsive, and there are not as many tracks. The sound is BAD. The characters repeat the same taunts over and over again.(especialy Coco)To sum it up,(you'd get bored to death if I told you everything I hate.)if you are a huge Crash fan, and you love kart racing, get Crash Team Racing(PS). If you're still a Crash fan, but you don't really like kart racing, get Crash Tag Team Racing(PS2). And if you don't like Crash, but like kart racing, get Mario Kart Double Dash!!(GC)Like I said, don't go near this game!

Avoid Vivendi Universal games

This is the second game we've bought that Vivendi Universal has taken over from the original creators and they've ruined this one, too. First, they brought down Spyro, and now they're after Crash Team Racing. The cars aren't easily controlled, the graphics got blurry going around some of the corners making it hard to tell where you were on the course, and worst of all - as soon as the first place racer crosses the finish line, the race is over. Whatever place you're in when they cross, that's where you end up. It was so much better when everyone was allowed to finish. I paid full price for this game so I'll muddle through it, but I'm never buying one of their games again.

Just not cutting it

Like many of the other reviewers here, I was a huge fan of Crash Team Racing (CTR) for PSOne. If you're not familiar, it's a kid-friendly game where you race around various tracks.

That game was just plain fun, and the weapon pick-ups scattered on the boards added an element of strategy. In addition, the cars were easy to control, there was a multitude of weapons to use, and it took some time to get through the levels--especially the "boss" levels where you're one-on-one with a main character.

This game has none of the charm of the original. The cars are often difficult to manuver around tight curves, and there just doesn't seem to be as many weapons to use. Plus, the other characters seem to be really good at dodging things left in their path, so most of the weapons are useless. I also noticed that some of the boards are virtually identical to the boards in the first CTR. The new creators have also added a tandem mode, which enables you to team up with another character on the board.

While this is interesting, it makes the levels even easier and further eliminates any challenge to winning races.

In short, this is one situation where adapting a game for PS2 was just not worth the effort. Pick up CTR for PSOne and enjoy...it's probably $20 or less, and it's a lot more fun than this one. Or, if you want a fun driving game for PS2, pick up Simpsons Road Rage.

Crash Nitro Kart is a Hit

We first tried CTR for playstation and loved it. Then we found Crash Nitro Kart and really thought it kicked butt. Anybody that doesn't think that it's equally as good, if not better then the orginal CTR, is looking way to deep into the game. It's a fun, competitive racing game with great graphics, creative power-ups and cool characters. I would totally suggest owning all of the Bandicott racing games.

Well, Crash Nitro Kart is a cool game. With a 4 stars rating. All the new weapons are cool. Here are some of the cool weapons that you can get: Static Orb, Ice Mine Tornado Top, Invisibility, Super Engine and Red Eye Missiles. I've only just started the game myself really, and i haven't got that far. But here's one thing; if you have already played, and completed CTR (Crash Team Racing), then you may be quite good at this game. If you want to buy it. Then either come to Amazon.com or go to GAME and buy it for £14.98 (£15.00). You don't have to go to GAME though I'm just recommending it, because that's where I got Crash Nitro Kart from. Good Luck!

Crash Nitro Kart....

Considering the fact that I recently purchased the Gameboy Advance Crash Nitro Kart and had an absolute blast with it, I was curious to check out the console version. First thing that amazed me about it was how the game looked graphically, I've seen alot of beautiful games on the PS2 and this is, by far, the best one I've seen on the system yet. Everything is colorful, vibrant, and, at times, literally breathtaking. The game itself takes a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach, meaning there's really nothing innovative or new to the game...it's basically like Crash Team Racing(for the PS1) more or less. Course, Crash Team Racing is a classic beloved by all and is, often referred to as, the only Kart Racer out there to match Mario Kart. So, that's not such a bad thing after all. In this game, Crash and the whole gang are, basically, kidnapped by a villian named Velo and forced to race his lackeys to save the earth. The object of the game is to race for first place and tag buddies with as many power-ups as possible to undermine their chances of winning. Players can choose from all of the characters in Crash's world and even unlock hidden ones, as well as play though several gameplay modes. The best one, to me, being the Adventure mode. Adventure Mode has 17 different tracks in five different worlds. Races are either against a field of seven others or up against a boss character. Once these races have been completed, you must round up the relics and whatnot to finish the whole mode to achieve 100%.

The only two gripes I have with the game; which, take note, don't take away anything from the game are...one, there's no Spyro in the game(bummer)to race with or- at least- that I know of like there is in the GBA game. Second, I wish there was a more frantic sense of speed to the game. Even though there's not, what speed that is there, works.

All in all, Crash Nitro Kart is just as addictive as the Gameboy Advance game and a good addition to the Crash Team Racing game. It's one of those games I'd recommend to all for a lil family competition. I love it...
