As close to the original story as you can get

I wholly recommend this to Tolkien fans, and RPG adventure gamers. It has excellent graphics, cut scenes and sound. The story is 95% true to the book, and its that part that may turn off true hard core gamers. Itrs certainly not long, but it includes all of the book, any attempt to make the game longer would probably have taken away from the adventure. Its can be a bit simple, but for Tolkien fans, its the best.

You have to be joking...

Like many others, I was very excited about this game. However, I quickly saw reviews piling up after its release, and they were not good ones. Yet I still persisted. I mean, it's Lord of the Rings. It can't be that bad...

Can it?

It can. I was horrified to find out that for most of the models they just took the same faces and gave them different hair and clothing. Landscapes are vast, but are relatively devoid of detail. Actually, landscapes actually aren't that big. You'll find fences you can't jump over, invisible walls that keep you on a set linear path... Hell, you can't even jump in the water! These big empty lands are filled with the same creatures over and over again. There's little variety. Lots of wolves, lots of spiders, lots of trolls, lots of evil plants, but they're even lacking different skins to give you some feel of variety. Then it's all topped off by ho-hum boss battles that are extremely repetitive in almost every sense. The graphics are decent at the very most. The whole game feels very bare and empty. The only time the graphics are truly taken advantage of is when you enter the mines of Moria, and even then they could have used some work.

One of the most annoying things in this game is that you feel like a freakin' errand boy. You'll spend your first moments in the game running around and dealing with a bunch of miscellaneous wastes of time. It gets even more ridiculous when it comes to your first evasion of the black riders. You reach the gate to leave, only to find out that it's broken, forcing you to run all the way back to complete some unnecessary task. Um, excuse me, but the gate is at freakin' shoulder height. Are you going to tell me you can't hop over it? Christ, you can even crawl through it. This is the same illogical triteness that sometimes plague games like Resident Evil. You've got an an explosive, but you can't open a locked wooden door?

Voice acting is horrible and characters often lack personality. Frodo mumbles on in his typical deadpan, Merry and Pippin are squealy annoyances, Aragorn is hollow and monotonous... It's as if the game made it an objective to completely blow off all the character development the book and the movie made. Along with the thoroughly dead and lifeless characters is the shoddy transition of things. One minute you're in a wagon safe and sound, the next minute your gang of retards are all lost around the woods for no apparent reason at all. The transitional devices are a joke. You're camping and given little idea as to what to do. So the game expects you to run around and explore the are for relatively no reason. Go down the hill and collect an item. Whoops! Frodo seems to magically notice (from the bottom of the hill) that everybody is gone! So then you run around a bit more and waste time trying to find your buddies. In fact, that's basically what the first part of this game. Save your pals from a bajillion different situations because they're so damn incompetent.

To make it short: This game is a let down. It's a disappointment in almost every respect. What really angers me is that the developers have the nerve to take the most prominent and amazing fantasy classic and gunk it up to the way they see fit. How people here can call this game "good" is beyond my comprehension. I think anybody who can see this game as worthy of purchase would have to be insane. Yes, this game is for die hard Tolkien fans. That's because nobody else would put up with this load of crap.

FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE A TRUE FAN OF THE BOOKS

I OWN THIS GAME AND HEAR MANY PEOPLE GIVE BAD REVIEWS ON IT.
I AM A FAN OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS AND KNOW MANY THINGS ABOUT IT. I LIKE THE MOVIES AND I'VE READ ALL OF THE BOOKS. NOW LET ME TELL YOU, THIS GAME IS NOT BASED OFF OF THE MOVIE. IT IS BASED OFF OF THE BOOK. SO THE CHARACTERS MAY NOT LOOK HOW THEY DO IN THE MOVIE. THIS GAME AT TIMES IS DIFFICULT BUT I WORKED AT IT AND BEAT IT. SO IF YOUR SMART AND ARE GOOD AT RPG GAMES THEN YOU WILL LIKE THIS GAME. YOU PLAY AS 3 CHARACTERS THROUGHOUT THE GAME, YOU PLAY AS FRODO, GANDALF, AND ARAGORN. THIS GAME MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR REALLY A PART OF THE FELLOWSHIP. THIS GAME IS RECOMENDED FOR FANS OF THE BOOK MOSTLY. BUT IF YOUR AN OVERALL FAN OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS LIKE ME, THIS GAME IS FOR YOU.

A Superb Video Game

The Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring video game for the XBox is wonderful. The graphics and sound are very well done , the gameplay is great , and the storyline relates to the author J.R.R. Tolkiens first great book of The Lord Of The Rings in a brilliant way! The only problem I had with this great video game was that it has to load a lot. But other than that I have had no other problems with this great video game. At first the game starts out slow while you are in the Shire. But after you get through the Shire and into the Old Forest the video game gets very exciting. And once you are out of the Old Forest the game is packed with a lot of action and adventure. The dark mines of Moria is one of the best levels in The Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring. You play as Frodo the hobbit , Aragorn the ranger , and Gandalf the wizard throughout this wonderful video game. You battle many enemies in this game. The enemies are giant spiders , trolls , black riders , orcs and more. The Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring for the XBox is a very superb video game , so I give it a good five out of five.

Game is not stable

Playing this game has been mostly frustrating. The control for targeting missles stops working at the most annoying times and the game freezes at least once everytime I play, causing me to reboot my xbox.

Beautiful Adaptation

I had the pleasure of play-testing this game in its final weeks of development.
For starters, the game is based on the book and not on the New Line movie. As a consequence, you will find a number of story elements in the game that were not in the movie, such as the Old Forest, Tom Bombadil, and the Barrow Downs. The novel has been expertly translated into a 3rd-person action adventure, and there is a lot more action in the game than actually occurs in the book.

In this game, Middle Earth has been faithfully rendered (under the watchful eye of Tolkien's estate) by the talented 3D modelers, graphic designers, animators, game designers, and developers at The Whole Experience. The first thing that really struck me was the sheer beauty of the game -- the score, the environmental details (run through a pile of leaves just for fun), the textures, the fluid character animation. Some of the more interesting elements of the book also shine in the game. For example, the sense of foreboding, fear, and deadly seriousness constrasted with the light-hearted nature of the hobbits. The Black Riders are quite intimidating, especially at first. And there are climactic moments in the Barrow Downs that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The One Ring, of course, plays a large role in the game. When used, the world changes, becoming shadowy and revealing secret areas of the game. The tension between the advantages and cost of using the ring creates interesting tradeoffs.

The gameplay is 3rd-person, similar to the Tomb Raider series. When you are targeting something with a ranged weapon (like a rock or a bow and arrow), it switches temporarily to first person. In each section of the game, you play as either Frodo, Aragorn, or Gandolf. The three characters are substantially different in their capabilities. Frodo is presented as an agile hobbit with plenty of jumping, leaping, climbing, etc. He's not great in melee combat, but excels at thrown projectiles. Aragorn is an impressive warrior, as well he should be. Playing Aragorn is empowering, with a thrilling and deadly sequence of sword strokes that makes him the best at melee combat. Gandolf can also fight well with a sword, but his primary weapon is magic, and he's got a cool set of spells he can cast to vanquish his enemies.

Of course, the game is not only (or even primarily) combat. In addition to general exploration and adversaries, there are a number of well-designed puzzles to be solved. Some of them are potential stumpers, I suspect.

In short, there is nothing earth-shatteringly new from a gameplay perspective. Nevertheless, the game excels as a wonderful and emotive adaptation of a much beloved book.

Cool!!! but...

I am a big LOTR fan. I have read the books and think they are awsome!! I am so glad they finally made a LOTR game where you aren't chopping peoples heads off the whole time:) Please read the label BASED ON THE LITERARRY(the books) WORKS OF J.R.R TOLKIEN!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!! It is so cool how you follow the book almost directly! Although, like every good game I have some complaints, like Sam sounds so wierd! The screen goes almost pitch dark in Moria if you don't leave your light on, Pipin looks stupid, the games freezes sometimes(what the heck causes that?), and you have a stupid purity meter!!!:( WHAT!? HALF THE FUN IN GAMES IS MAKING TROUBLE!! Oh well! Overall it is a neat game and really fun! I have beaten the game twice and earned a secret code! BUT IT WON'T WORK!!!!! Yep! So much for cool code! I can't wait for The Two Towers to come out!!:) I hope all the bad reviews won't let them down!! Keep up the good work! One more suggestion... TAKE OUT THE BLOOD!!!! (please?) Overall it is a great game that is really unique! Work on the glitches and The Two Towers will be great!! I would have given it a five, but the BLOOD!!! and the other things!!!

Lord of the Rings Freak:)!!! signing off! ('sup!)
