after a little tweeking on vidio card, i now have the best playing game in the history of rpgs, the graphics are phenomenal, the sound is good, (but maybe a little too much of it.). Some of the game playing is so intence, that the hairs on my neck, stand up, no other game has done this since Daggerfall. All rpgs should be this great, to bad this is the last of the Ultima,s. So long Lord British!

Solid game, shaky program

I'd highly recommend this game, but with one caveat: make sure you get the patch, and expect some troubleshooting even after you get the "lastest, bug-free" buggy version.

The game itself is awesome, and has a very solid plot line behind it. The Avatar's voice sounds... well, Grade-B acting, but the script is pretty good and largely to the point. The graphics, which are generally excellent, get kind of choppy when you're in town, however, so a high-end machine is recommended (I'm running on a PIII, 450, 128ram). There are also plenty of well-done cutscenes (a personal must-have) which keep you interested in the game and allow for additional plot development.

Don't expect flawless performance, but do expect a great and enjoyable game.

They make a game that surpasses the power of most if not all computers of 1999(the year it was made) and probably for many years to come. Like Wing Commander III it was Unplayable when it was out and it is now... But for different reasons. Yeah, in a couple of years you'll have that nice P9 /9 ghz with a Voodoo 7/75000 and whatever but will your operating system be compatible? No. These showy graphics games like this are useless. No computer can run them. Not now. Not ever. If I had a super-duper Voodoo 7/7500 ect. I could probably give you an acurate review. Who has that?(with windows 98). As for graphics they are excellent, stupendous, never seen anything like them; but since they are like a slide show I just see them as adequete. I imagine butterflys and what not flying gracefully and that would be "stupendous" but it's just stupid on my machine. The acting is not as bad as people make it out to be... It is... Well.. Adequate... For a game. Not as bad as Animae cartoons... Almost not. Dungeons are fun and beautiful but are like tome raider(a lot of people say that and now so do I). It's pretty though and has dialogue. Raven's fun. Get Redguard(not at-all bad acting) or Tomb raider they will surely work on most computers. The only difference is this one does not.

I enjoyed U9 very much

Yes, of course, there were some bugs, and it was a little slow in parts. I have a PII 350 with 64 MB RAM, and a Voodoo 3 2000. Amazingly enough, the game ran very well, with the only exception being the capital city, but that happens to everybody. Ultimas have always been designed to last for a long time, and that means designing for a computer that will still be around in a few years. I have played the game all the way through, and only crashed 5 times or so...and there are very few games that don't crash at all, in my experience.

Even with the detail settings set at the minimum, this game is beautiful. The story is kind of linear, but it is a good story. My bottom line would probably be to wait until at least the second patch is out--around Christmas--before you buy the game, because once all the bugs are taken care of, this game will go down in history.

Edit: Now that it's 2003, I think that the only thing that will go down in history about this game will be the bug-filled release. However, I would like to urge purchasers of this game to download the fanmade dialogue patch (do a search on Google for it). This will make the dialogue more intelligent, improve the storyline, and actually tie in the previous games and their storylines. You won't be able to hear the voice acting, but you're not missing much. The graphics are still mostly compareable to today's 3D RPGs, so picking up a bargain copy of this game is worth it.

Great RPG! Should be game of the year!

I was very excited when I first got this game. I played it every day. I have already beaten the game and I still play it. The graphics are great and it works perfect on my computer. I have a Dell 500 mhz with a voodoo 3. To get the great graphics it is highly reccomended you have a voodoo. Overall I think the game was worth the money.

Buggy, but Good

While not as complex as previous Ultimas, still an engaging game. The game itself however, requires a lot of Hardware to run reasonably, and a Glide compatible video card to run well. To their credit, the game's authors have been working diligently to make the game more accesible.
