3DFX Needed

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: December 24, 1999

Since I don't have a Viper, I can't comment on the other reviews, but I only have a P266 with 128mb of ram and a voodoo 2 card (minimum requirements) and it works ** FINE **. Granted I have to keep the detail settings down to the minimum levels but it's still a beautiful and enjoyable game.

If you have the system requirements and, most importantly, 3DFX, then get it. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that, judging from all the complaints I've been hearing, none of Origin's beta testers used a TNT card (like, duh!)

The Ulitimate Ultima

This game rules. I've played all of the Ultimas and this one's my favorite. Simple fun. Those are the only words that describe this game. Those who have anything but a Voodoo 2/3 will crash and burn, I have a special edition Voodoo 2 coupled with a GeForce 256 and this game kicks flaming butt with them. I like this game because it is an Ultima, everything is simple and non-cluttered, and the graphics RULE! , but only with a Voodoo 2 or 3. I hope they will release a patch for this so you can use all types of hardware on it but the patch might weigh a hefty 50-150 mb. Please buy and enjoy.

Doesn't do justice to Britannia and the Ultima series.

Good:

3D graphics are amazing. You really do feel like you're walking around Britannia, spelunking through caves and dungeons, etc.

Puzzles (mostly in the dungeons) are quite difficult.

Bad:

Game is ultra-linear. You must complete each quest in a more-or-less prescribed order, in exactly the manner you are told.

Characters and plot are not very compelling at all. Your mission is very clear from the outset--cleanse the shrines, defeat the Guardian.

Ugly:

Graphics are choppy, even with a 1.3 GHz P4/128 MB/GeForce 2 Ultra (!). I've heard that this game really needs a 3dfx card to run well.

I'm running this game on Windows Me, and for some reason, every time I save or load a game, Windows runs another copy of the game. With two copies of U9 running, the game is unplayable. It's really irritating to keep having to exit the game and restart it every time I need to save or load a game. I don't know if anyone else has this problem. Maybe I should downgrade to Windows 98 or something.

Wow I liked this game a lot!!!

First i liked this game on several levels. but it also had its cons.
pros:
1. The graphic are aboslutly stunning the best i have ever seen in a game like that.
2. the commands seem complex but they are really simple.
3. i like the story line, it is very stait forward but very in depth and full of suprises.
4. also the main quest may be very liner but that is helpful so you dont get stuck thinking what do i do now? also having a world that big makes it so you hardly notice the liner main quest, IF you explore.
5. also the game was challenging from all the puzzles, but it made it so it wasn't a hack'n'slash that gets old in 5 minutes.
6. finaly the game made me want to wake up at four in the morning to play it so i could play it for 4 hours before my brother kick me off.
Cons:
1. the 3-D engine left very small seems and i fell in a couple of them and, um... ended up under the dungeon.
2. the dialogue stinks they said they had profesional actors do it but i dont think thats true.
3. some off the game is "faulty" like the falling through seems, or doors that wont open that should, etc.... anyway i sujest you the fly code to fix those problems or you will have to restart several times.
4. the game can only run nicely on rather good computers or at least on my good computers.
5.the game was too short. now that may seem like a shocker to any who played the game before but i beat the game in 6 days!!!
with a tinker.
any way this is a really good game despite the draw backs and is worth every penny of its cost if you can play it on your comp.

Must need a serious graphics card to run it

One star only because I haven't seen it play--- Haven't had a chance to play it yet. The package says it needs an 8meg video card but it won't recognize my Diamond Viper 330 w/ 8megs. I sent an e-mail to tech support on the Ultima website a couple weeks ago to see if there was a patch or something to fix it and haven't heard from them yet. I guess this one will have to go on the shelf for awhile until I can get a Voodoo3 3000 card.

I guess I needed a new video card anyway!

This game is really really beautiful. It is worth the upgrades I had to purchase to be able to play it, though that may kill it's mass market appeall. The Ultima team has been making really great games for as long as i can remember. And I remember Ultima I on the TRS80. Woof! Besides, if you get your system to the point where it can run this game, there isn't a game out there that you wont be able to play. (for a few weeks anyway!)

A good game but it requires a MONSTER machine to run...

First, the when the guys in Origin sit down to write a game, I am pretty sure that it is gonna be a hit. Now, the game is really good, the graphics are stunning if you run the game in enhanced mode, however, before you consider buys this game I recommend that you consider your PC (coz it aint fun to pay $$ and have a choppy game play). What the guys from Origin are saying is b.s., the PC you need needs to be much more powerful than the recommended requirements. For optimal performance: CPU: 600+ Mhz Memory: 256Mb 3D Accelerator with at least 32Mbs of memory. 1.6 GB of Hard Drive (you dont wanna switch disks, right). If your PC can meet that, I strongly recommend this game (my PC doesnt)...

Beautiful, frustrating, but worth it?

This would be five stars if not for the very buggy play. Patch 1.07 is out, and helps alot, but having a saved game handy is a must for the times the app will close for no reason.(once every 2 hours). The game though is impressive, and fun. I recommend it for those who can stomach the crashes.

Still Buggy and No Support.

U9 could be a good game. Not a great game, but a good one. Unfortunately, even with the so-called "Final Patch" the game is extremely buggy. Origin calls it the Final Patch because they claim to have fixed all the bugs. Yeah, right. They may have fixed all the plot-stopping bugs, but many bugs do remain. For example, whenever I try to bind a spell to my spellbook, it crashes to windows. Some people can't even get the game to run at all. Combine this with the fact the EA tech support absolutely will NOT respond to any requests for tech support, and this game deserves 1 star. I strongly recommend against buying this game, but if you do buy it make sure you buy it from your local EB or Babbages so you can easily return it in case it won't run on your system. It's very sad actually. Even if you play this game 3 years from now, only the performance will be better because you'll have a more powerful system. But because Origin and EA don't want to waste any more time on a bug-ridden product, the game will still be very frustrating and un-enjoyable.

*** PII 250 or lower need not bother ***

This game is so advanced graphically that anyone without a mega powerful system AND graphics card shouldnt even bother..the frame rate on my pIII 400 is only bareable if i scale down the graphical settings to bare minimum...these settings include everything from the texture level to how far u can see, so if u can cope with being able to only see blocks at point blank range by all means try the game...other than the technical difficulties the game itself doesnt even feel like a normal ultima game, it borrows heavily from other titles such as hexen (which was mediocre in itself). In my opinion dont even bother if u r a die hard ultima fan with a normal to slower range computer.
