The Weakest Link - Good Buy!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 15 / 15

Activision's "The Weakest Link" is by far one of the best PC game recreations of a TV game show that I have seen. If you are not brave enough to face Anne Robinson in person (and who would blame you?!), this is a perfect opportunity to have the game show experience in the comfort of your own home.

The 3D graphics are amazing (though for (price), the technology is not quite yet there to give you and your fellow contestants anything better than block-head look). The game plays just like the TV show… from the lighting, to the music, to the "camera" swooping in/passing by each contestant. The only difference is the answers are presented in a multiple-choice format. You get the real-life Anne (in filmed segments) zinging the "team" with her trademark barbs between rounds and "cyber"-Anne furiously whipping her computer console around as she fires away. Even the same male TV announcer from the NBC show calmly informs us who was the strongest link, the weakest link, and who banked most for the team. Get too many answers wrong or take too long and your fellow players will vote you off. The "Walk of Shame" is even intact as players try to rationalize their mistakes or blame other players as they walk of the cyber-set.

I would actually make this a 4.5 star review -- while the PC game ultimately ran fine for me, it did not on a slightly older computer. So a word of caution to those who may not have purchased a computer within say the last 2 years or so. Additionally, you are given 2 screen resolutions to choose from. Neither gave me a totally smooth graphics (although they are good enough to still enjoy the game).

Overall, this is fast paced fun for fans of "Weakest Link" TV game show and its host Anne Robinson.

Goodbye (evil wink).

You ARE the Weakest Link... Goodbye!

Feisty Anne Robinson scolds and punishes us in this brilliant and fun remake of the successful Brit import game show "The Weakest Link".

A wonderful recreation of the actual TV game show, we are forced to undergo everything actual contestants endure on the show; time pressured questions, stupid team mates, and a sultry school marm berating us all the way.

The voting is fun. I have yet to deduce any set patterns in voting from my fellow team mates. Truly, they surprise me regularly during the game, and I too have fallen under the wrath of being voted out of the game.

The questions challenging, and some are easy, and after regular play for about two weeks, I am not getting a blaze of repeated questions yet as it happens in some other games. you can adjust question difficulty, as well as the types of questions asked.

One glitch: I was disappointed that I had to choose a character to become, rather than being me, but you find someone like yourself and still go along for fun.

I highly recommend this game for any Weakest Link fans and those daring enough to undergo Anne's wicked glare.

Why not include an online multiplayer?

This game is very realistic:

1) If you think too long to answer, the other players will vote you off.

2) This happened to me during a tie-breaker: 3 players left; and everyone got 1 vote. Strongest Link had to decide who to vote off, and since I voted for them, they changed their voted and voted for me even though I wasn't the weakest, but because I voted for them. I was impressed.

3) If you think Ann is intimidating on TV, wait 'til you buy this game. Everytime you choose the "Single Player" she cracks how you don't have any friends to play with, or if you pick the "Bend the rules" option, she says "I guess you do need to cheat to win."

4) Unlike other trivia games, this one has 100,000 questions!!(So I heard) I played it and no repeats yet and even if you might see a repeat, you have to be a real rain-man to memorize all the answers.

However, this game needs online multiplayer! If it will in future editions, this should challenge other game like You DOn't Know Jack as the best trivia game of all times.

Fans of Anne will love this game

THE WEAKEST LINK is an immensely fun gameshow on NBC. Activision takes it and turns it into a well-presented, educational, and fun computer game. If you enjoy trivia games, computer games, and competition this game is for you. Beware, Anne is there in full swing and full of insults and shes not afraid to dish it. So buy this game, sit back and enjoy the insults because YOU are the weakest link.

When playing this game, you must be one of the various players. This is not always fun because it doesn't allow you to be yourself when you play, but it's a small price to pay. As you play, it's important to be quick and answer lots of questions. If not, you will be voted off and take the Walk of Shame, not fun. This game allows you to increase your knowledge and compete for the prize money and it is well presented. I suggest you buy this great game today!

Improvision of The Show

Great game! One problem I had was that I didn't have a good video card, and you need a GOOD one that supports 3D graphics. If not, it will appear blank when the announcer introduces the contestants, etc. Plus the question and possible answers might not show up if you don't. It looks great!

There are three "Modes" in the game.

1 - Normal - Exactly like the T.V. Show. You have about 4 choices to choose from but only starting with 1 letter of the correct response, not so much to give it away.
2 - Easy - This option gives you 4 choices to choose from, including the whole word. A teenager/young adult could play this with ease.
3 - Junior - This option gives you 2 answers to choose from. The EASIEST. A 2-year-old could play this mode and win.

Overall, I give it a 4 star, because Anne repeatedly says the same things like "Coherently, you have gotten rid of all the Weakest Links, and you still banked only this much."

Great Representation of the Show

If you like the TV Show, you'll really enjoy this game. The set looks just like the one on TV. There's plenty of options (make human player be able to bank at any time, make more questions on certain topics appear more...), but I'll review it based on normal gameplay.

Differences from TV: There are 7 players instead of 8. Also, the first question in the money chain to $125,000, starts at $2,500 and not $1,000. The last round when there are 2 players left, the amount of money banked is tripled instead of doubled. This still makes it possible to bank $1,000,000 in the entire game even though you have 7 players.

Other than this, it's exactly the same. The questions are multiple choice, but you only get the first letter in each choice, so the correct answer will not appear in full, so you still have to know the answer outright. Example: The first month of the year is? Choices: J,F,M,A. You'd have to pick the J. Rules are identical to the show. The strongest link starts from the previous round starts first. If there is a tie in votes, the strongest link decides who is voted off. If you get to the final 2, the strongest link in the last round chooses to go first or second in the 5 question final round. Then it goes to sudden death if tied after 5 until someone is ahead after the extra round. The computer players votes are very good. They usually notice who's missing questions but aren't always predictable as to who they're voting off. After each round, the same "announcing voice" as in the show comes on and says "______ was the strongest link, _______ was the weakest link.." Very realistic.

The box says there's 100,000 questions in the game. If you play it, and don't look at the computer players' questions and answers, and only focus on if they get the questions right or wrong, (can be easily done by not looking at the top of the screen) you'll only see a fraction of all the questions asked in that round. I think this will diminish the chances for repeat questions (a fear that I have in buying/playing games such as this one).

This is well worth the purchase, especially if you like the show.

Millionaire, watch out, cuz there's a new game in town! Weakest Link has everything from Anne to 21 real characters to choose from. You can now have the inconvenience of Anne in your own home! Anne has everything from new Brutal Truths to over 100,000 questions! You even get to hear "You ARE the Weakest Link! Goodbye!" and get to take the Walk of Shame.

You can play with up to 7 other players, human and/or computer, and you can even play over the net or over a network!

If you don't run out and buy the game the opening day, you ARE the Weakest Link! Goodbye!

it's an interesting simulation

I like this game but cannot in all fairness give it an unqualified recommendation. The synchronization between the audio and video, particularly when Anne is speaking, could be better. In spite of running the game on a loaded Pentium 4 system, I could not get crisp video resolution no matter how the monitor was configured, especially for the opening movie segment. Although the box suggests the game could work on a Pentium 200, I originally installed it on an AMD K6-2 450 and lost the picture just when it was time to "meet the team". The game ran slowly on a Pentium III 450mhz. In single-player format, when one of the computer-generated opponents is voted off, this opponent, game in and game out, makes the same final remarks after taking the walk. (There is an option to increase player abusiveness, which I have not yet tried.) If you get to play the last round for the money, which I accomplished twice in about 12 tries (losing $275,000 and $150,000), there are no closing remarks by either the winner or runner-up. Concerns have been raised about the overall quality of the graphics, particularly the expressions and body movement of the players. I think there could be some room for improvement here.

One feature of the game allows in my view for a little bit of cheating. When presented with a question, you have just enough time to read it, and decide whether or not you have a reasonable chance of coming up with the correct answer, before banking.

Several aspects of the game I think are very successful. The audio generally is very realistic compared to the show. Anne is as charming as a wasp. The overall high speed of play is intimidating; alertness and concentration are essential, and the nasty business of voting has to be done with care. As in the show, you need a bit of luck as well as skill, as you can get voted off even if you are not the worst player. As a rule the team either votes one player off in a landslide or the result is very close. The rendering of the stage set is effective.

Overall I think the game is great fun, but I hope the next version of it will have some fine tuning here and there. Recommended.

Excellent game. The most replay value you can get for under ... bucks, easily. A must have for game show fanatics or regular gamers alike. I liked but this game is a helluva lot more fun as well as being suspenseful. Attaboys go out to Activision for a quality inexpensive pc game.

A VERY FUN GAME!

OK,WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS,I THOUGHT,COULD THIS BE BETTER THAN MILLIONAIRE? WELL,YES! THIS HAS MORE EXCITEMENT,TONS AND TONS OF QUESTIONS,AN ANIMATED SET,AND OF COURSE ANNE! EXACTLY LIKE THE SHOW,EVEN THE EXACT SAME INTRO'S AND ENDING'S LIKE ON TV,THE ONLY DRAWBACKS ARE: THE COMMENTARYS OF THE CONTESTANTS AND ANNE REPEAT TOO MUCH,AND IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE CONTESTANTS MOUTH'S MOVED OR THEY HAD SOME EXPRESSION,VIDEO'S AND PICTURES (NOT THE ANIMATIION) ON THE GAME ARE GRAINY,AND YOU HAVE TO SELECT THE RIGHT DRIVERS,VIDEO CARDS,ETC.,EVERYTIME YOU START THE GAME,NO OTHER GAMES DO THAT THAT I'M AWARE,IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT DRIVERS YOU WANT THE GAME TO USE,AND SELECT THE WRONG ONES,THE GAME STARTS,YOU CAN HEAR THE SOUNDS BUT YOU CAN'T SEE ANY PICTURE! AND END UP HAVING TO DO AN IMPROPER SHUT-DOWN ON YOUR PC,AND ONE OTHER THING,NO SCOREKEEPING!!!!!!!!!! WHAT'S A GAME WITHOUT SCORE KEEPING?!?! WELL HOPEFULLY THESE ISSUES WILL BE FIXED ON THE 2ND EDITON (IF THERE WILL BE ONE,I HOPE!),BUT STILL A GREAT GAME. GOODBYE!
