An intelligent assessment for would-be buyers

Let's get the obvious out of the way: Battlegrounds is a star wars adaptation of Age of Empires (AOE), but to imply (...)that this demeans the game itself is foolish--that's like saying Unreal tournament is a (bad) game because it borrows so much from the original Quake series. Come on!

Fans of Star Wars will appreciate the "star warsification" of this game. I've played AOE and similiar games, but never bought one until now. Why? Becuase in Battlegrounds I can create Sith Lords, or create the most dreaded Empirial attack via At-At's--what AOE game can comepare to that? (Unless you get a bigger rush from commanding a herd of elephants...)

This is a great game, especially for someone new the genre. It is very challenging, solid graphics, and I don't care who you are, a multiplayer star wars battle on Hoth beats anything else hands down.

If you are a big star wars fan, you will not regret buying this game. I was a bit skeptical myself until four hours later when I knew I had made a great decision.

I've give the game a 8.5/10 (however I do confess that I am new to the RTS genre had have limited experience with other games).

Great Game! I Absolutely Love It!

Sure, the game is based on the Age of Kings engine developed by Ensemble Studios. In reality, this game is AOK in a Star Wars Universe. But you know what? AOK was a great game, and so is Galactic Battlegrounds. There are six civilizations to choose from and each civ has unique-looking units and buildings.

The Campaigns and Scenarios that come with the game are excellant and very challenging, but the real game is playing someone either on-line or on a network. Nothing beats playing another person in a 1 vs. 1 game, or even teaming up with Allies in a 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 game.

I am very much looking forward to the Expansion Pack that will feature updated graphics, new campaigns and new civs.

This game is sweet! You can be almost any civ. that you want to be. You get almost every vehicle as well. In fact I'm getting the expansion pack, which I heard was excellent. I heard it has two new civs., 14 new scenarios, 200 new units, and it updates the civs. from earlier (You know the ones without the expansion pack.

...buying the game.

It is very easy to rate a game that has not been released...it is called playing the demo.

I was sceptical of this game, given LA's recent PC games...but this game blew me away.
The gameplay mirrors that of AoE:AoK, and the graphics are amazing! It uses true soundbites that are well timed and meaningful.

It really is going to be worth the money for this fun game.

Highly anticipated game!

I cannot understand the previous bad comments about this game, simply because it is not out yet!!

Be the judge after it is out, and brush up on your spelling big fella. Perhaps next time, before you bag a game based on its system requirements, you get a pc with some basic requirements like a spell checker!

Good luck, your gonna need it! :0

This game will blow away every RTS game until AOM.

Some people who have not done much thinking on this subject, or on any subject for that manner, have suggested that people cannot rate this game before it comes out. These people are obviously wrong. It is easy to rate a game before it comes out! First of all, you play other games like it (in this case, RTS games) and research them thoroughly. Second, you research this game thoroughly. Thirdly and most importantly, you play the demo. I have done all three. From my extensive experience playing Age of Kings and The Conquerors, I know exactly how an RTS is played, have worked out the balance issues of these games in my head. I know the viable strategies for these games, what works and what does not. Then comes this game; its engine is exactly the same, besides some light improvements. But these improvements are not what make it better. It is the balance issues! Ensemble Studios did a wonderful job balancing Age of Kings, but the balancing on Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds is absolutely sublime. There is now more than one useful strategy in this; the civilizations, though no more unique, have new artsets. There are two choices for units in Tech level 1, for crying out loud! This adds a whole new dimension to the game! In Age of Kings, DRUSHing (Dark Age Rushing) was a good strategy but seldom seen. From what I have seen of the demo, Tech level 1 rushing has become much more common, as has Tech 3 rushing, instead of just boring old Tech 2 attacks. Another thing that helps the game (the minor improvements I mentioned above) are Air Units, Shield Generators, and Power Cores. Air units add one whole new dimension to the game, units that cannot be hit by normal units. Shield Generators add great defensive elements to the game (though the game is still offense-oriented) and are great offensive tools as well. Power Cores make rushing more difficult and the resource carbon more necessary because buildings can't produce units quickly without them. All in all, this game is not only as good as The Conquerors, but better. It will blow every other RTS into the dust, including such disappointments as Empire Earth, until the release of Age of Mythology by the experts at Ensemble Studios. Until then, it is easily the best, partially because of the influence of ES on the project. (As you can see, they are my favorite developers.)

Alberto how can you review a game that doesn't come out till November? I only gave it 5 stars to negate your 1. Play the game first!

after reading a bunch of negative reviews about this game, I went out and bought it. I did so because it was a star wars game that looked interesting and I had [PRICE] i didn't know what to do with. it was money well spent. galactic battlegrounds is a fun game. there isn't as much strategy as i had expected (then again, so far I've only played on the easy setting) but it is very addictive. I spent about 6 hours in one campaign (was up until 5 am) and had to go to sleep before tightening the noose on the forces of the empire (i was the rebellion of course). there are many planets to choose a setting from, as well as many military units (unfortunately no A-wings, B-wings or Tie intercepters) i can't wait to try out the other civilizations as well. each are supposed to be different somewhat. i hope that lucas arts makes an upgrade with more civilizations, such as black sun, a hutt civilization, or one of the multitude of other races created in star wars. the game is good, i'd recommend it. I've never played age of empires II, but this has got to be better, i mean, its star wars

I, like many others bought this game because I'm a fan of the Star Wars series. THe game had the potential to be a new a and entertaining expirence.

At first the characters and new terrains were satisfying. After a day or two though, you realize you're just playing Age of Empires with Star Wars equipment.

If you've played Age of Empires, and have already "OD" on it, don't bother getting this game. It's practically the same thing.

If you hav'nt "OD" on Age of Empires, or better yet, never played it, then Star Wars Galatic Battle Grounds should be a great game playing expirence for you.

My advice is don't get the game just because it says Star Wars. Think about how much fun you'll recieve while playing the game.
