It is a good day to be a Trekkie

From junk over junk games to humiliation of being only proud member of United Federation of Planets instead of Rebel Alliance, Armada finally showed what Star Trek is made of and can be. Well basic interface and screenshot companies and reviews posted looks very similar to Starcraft but do not get fooled by presentimental judgement of your eyes. Armada is far more than mere copy of Starcraft.

Uniqueness of Armada lies on the combination of good things in lots of successful strategy games in the past. Those good things are clean easy interface of Starcraft, AI and multiplicity of command of Dark Reign, and view point and exciting combat of Homeworld. As matter of fact, Scout and Search & Destroy command (which was most useful in Dark Reign) was directly implemented. Furthermore, (my favorite) director's cut mode give you ability to see actual dogfight like combat in Homeworld. If you don't believe me just zoom the camera and you could see near TV version of starship combat.

One thing I most liked was storyline. Well it's beat crappy but still interesting for to see plot develop instead of directly implementing from TV shows or movie. Nevertheless, there are few things I was really bugged. First is why did they make Defiant class warship and Klingon Bird of Prey so weak. Second is I think makers should design Borg lot stronger but expansive to build.

Yes, this is THE best RTS I have ever played. The controls are quite simple, the concept is intreaging, the graphics are blazing, and sound is blasting, and the game play is like none other. I was suprised at all the bland, average ratings and reviews Armada was getting among the game sites, but when it came down to the people's choice, Armada glittered. This game is simply amazing, with 4 different races, other Star Trek people (such as Cardassians, Jem'Hadar and Feringi) that are standing by for gaming support, and multiplayer options! Woa, overdrive. Okay, look, I didn't even know what GENRE Armada was before I bought it! I was just in the store, and it was $20! (Canadian). I had ... beans in my pocket, so I shelled 'em out, since I am a huge Trekie, I trusted that the game would be good. Noticing that it was RTS, I was suprised, and almost dissapointed, but when I played the game, it was far richer than any Sim or Action! If you have $... lyin' around, get Armada...! It will take you to the far reaches of your moniter, erm, space.

A marriage of the RTS genre and Star Trek can't lose.

Star Trek Armada is an addictive game. After completing 20 challenging missions as the Federation, the Klingon, the Romualns, the Borg, and finally as a combined task force against a Borg invasion you'll be ready to take a crack at the online arena. You can play against up to seven other palyers and (with effort) create your own game maps, or download others maps from many different websites. You can also download mods, game modifications created by other gamers to enhance the game. These mods range from adding a singe ship to converting the Star Trek world into a clash between the Empire and the Rebels (Star Wars), or even the Federation against the Star Wars universe.
One unique and powerful attribute of this game is it's graphics engine. No matter haw many units you build, no matter how bloody the battle with explosions and the like, the game will not get sluggish or even miss a frame (however there is some lag over slow internet connections, try to play against people with low pings).
A great side effect of the popularity of this game is the proliferation of "clans". These clubs of gamers band together to make "war" against other "clans". Some clans have upwards of fifty active members, though most have around ten. ...BR>This is a must have for RTS buffs and Trekkers alike.

Star Trek as you have never seen it Before!

Star Trek, the Final Frontier... these words are of the great history of the Star Trek universe. The whole concept of this world is amazing and very likable.

Over the years many games have come out that are about Star Trek and have the facts, but they weren't really what people were looking for. Now after so long, a Star Trek game is now released that truly shows how great this World is. Star Trek - Armada is this game. It is a Real Time Strategy 3d game of the Star Trek universe. It expresses it very well. You are able to pick up to 4 races... the Federation, the Klingon, the Romulans, and the Borg. Each race has about 10 special abilities and their own units. The story line of this game is very good and it clearly shows an Expansion coming up. This is definitly a game to put on your must-buy list.

If you are a Star Craft or Command & Conqueror fan, this the next game for you.

At last! A merely satisfactory Star Trek game...

This is a game that the Star Trek subgenre could've used about two years ago, but as it is now, it's too little, too late. Yes, it's more, ahem, engaging than your average Star Trek game, but it does nothing to improve upon the strategy genre as a whole. As such, like most Star Trek games, it can only really be recommended for Star Trek fans.

Having said that, if you're unfamiliar with the strategy genre, you will find this to be an enjoyable enough starting point. The graphics are great, the sounds lush, the cinematics impressive, and the vocal talent appropriately star-filled. For the novice to intermediate strategist, the game's AI and missions are enough to occupy the senses as you get the idea of the genre.

But, as has been remarked before, if you *have* played strategy games before, it feels like you're merely playing a buggy version of _Age of Empires_ in space.

Despite having installed the first update patch, the game still quits unexpectedly. It also doesn't work very well at all with multiple-monitor systems, failing to stop mouse movement at the edge of the playing screen. In fact, the whole mouse movement is awkward. After fiddling endlessly with the mouse control option, it seems to me that there is just some kind of small programming flaw; it doesn't scroll particularly smoothly, regardless of setting. It's not that the flaw is enough to make the game unplayable, it's just that it's difficult sometimes to move with precision. Which brings up another point: perspective. There's something about the angle at which units and objects are placed that makes it difficult to see as much of the playing field as you want at one time. There's so much empty space in the game, by definition, that, in order to see everything, you really need to be 'pulled back' more than the game allows.

Still, there's hope that much of this will be solved by additional patches. Clearly there's enthusiasm for the product amongst the Star Trek community, and Activision has already serviced this community with one patch. More will undoubtedly be forthcoming, and the game might well work itself into stability.

Of course, the larger point is that _Starcraft_ and _Age of Empires II_ (among others) are already stable, challenging, and popular among multiplayer communities. Many people will therefore think that it might well be worth skipping this satisfactory game for one that truly excels.

Great as far as Star Trek goes, but middling in general

Star Trek games are for some reason notoriously awful. I'm not sure if developers are intimidated by the fame of the series, or if there simply aren't very many programmers who can handle the Wing Commander level many of us gamers expect from a good space game. While Armada is better than most, it still could be so much more.

Yes, you can be one of four groups - the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans, or the Borg. Each has its own ships and bases, and special abilities. The graphics are Homeworld-esque - very lovely, with details on ships and other stellar objects.

I grew up loving Star Trek, and it is neat to be able to manipulate the ships. However, playing is like sliding miniatures around on a glass tabletop. Where is the space aspect of this? Scales are not always proper as they slide from Point A to Point B. You do traditional StarCraft types of operations - mine your dilithium, build your base, kick out fighting units, take out the enemy. Instead of choosing an attack stance, you choose the red/yellow/green alert.

Getting into the game is extremely difficult for new players. The manual itself is not very helpful, and the commands are not always intuitive. One of our test machines was a P2-266, which they list as supported, but the machine only ran at the lowest graphic setting available, choking constantly. Even on faster systems the crash rate is rather impressive.

I really, really wanted to enjoy this as a strategy game. My love of Trek tried to get me to overlook some of the flaws. However, no matter how gorgeous the ships themselves and the generated mid-game cinematics, the AI is simply lacking and the gameplay itself is nothing special when compared to other strategy games out there.

If you're a Trek lover, grab a copy to play with the ships. If you're a true strategy player, wait and hope that the next one that comes out resolves some of these key issues.

FULL OF BUGS

This acts like a pre-beta release of the game. IT crashes often and locks up even more often. Still waiting for Activision to address their mistakes. Steering clear of this game is a good idea.

I like it!

This is a really great game especially for the Star Trek fans out there. It does have some bugs but I have not found a game that has really good graphics and playing that does not. There is a patch out there already for Armada that I am trying - it is worth a try. This game is worth playing bugs and all though, lots of playing action, challenge and 26 different sequences makes it well worth the time and effort.

Could Be Better

I hope saying something bad about this game doesn't get me torn apart by the barbarian hordes of the species called a "trekkie." Star Trek Armada strikes me as a bit of a Starcraft clone. However, unlike Starcraft the graphics are good. Armada is somewhere between the great interface and graphics of Homeworld and the easy to control, somewhat cartoon-like Starcraft units. The game has the feel of being close to completion, but rushed to the shelves before the 2d interface becomes obsolete. If you want a good game the I suggest you buy Armada. However, if you want a better game then wait a bit longer or go buy Homeworld.

Pretty to look at...however...

My first impression of this game was "Wow. Gorgeous. Amazing." In all fairness, this game is very nice to look at; all the ships look fantastic, as do the environments (although none of the ships are sized to scale; as a Borg fan, this bothered me a bit). However, there were a lot of problems...first of all, all the races are pretty similar in how they function...second, the game shipped with an absurd number of bugs (although there is a patch that fixes most of these now). The AI presents no challenge whatsoever, and the game gets very old very, very quickly. I cannot recommend this one for hardcore RTS fans...this game will be a breeze, and there really isn't anything 'new' here...you will tire of it quickly. The only people I can recommend this to are hardcore Star Trek fans, who will love the graphical interface (note that Multiplayer is actually pretty entertaining when you toss a couple more thinking opponents into the mix).
