A definite improvement to the original game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3
Date: March 30, 2002
Author: Amazon User

Livin' Large is a big improvement to the original Sims. With the additional 4 neighborhoods you can try different things, like making an entire neighborhood of one particular career type. Plus, this expansion offers up five new career tracks, which brings the total to 15. Not bad if you're looking to try out a variety of careers.

The new objects in Livin' Large are nice, but I wasn't able to find all the new objects the box claimed to have. I looked for some of them for a while; maybe I looked in the wrong spot. The additional objects help though, they fill in the quality gaps the original Sims had, and they give themes, which are a nice change from the original. You can use wall torches, a bearskin rug, or a vibrating, heart shaped bed.
The Sims themselves can now have different looks; there are new faces and bodies, which give your Sims more personality. There are bodies and faces to go with the skins; you can have gladiators, or sarongs or other things to liven it up.

All in all Livin' Large is good if you liked the original Sims but found it to be lacking. It doesn't cover all the missing aspects of the Sims, but it's a good start.

Livin' Large...could have been better

First let me tell you that I like to keep my Sims happy. This expansion pack seems to have been designed to mostly torture your Sims. What do you get? Let's see...

1. Roach infestations. You don't get the occasional roach or two like you would expect... You get plagues! In real life, if you had this kind of problem, you would call an exterminator. You can't do that here. To avoid these, you have to pretty much clean the toilet after every use. Even unmade beds can cause them to appear! Ridiculous! The maid will sometimes spray them but not always.

2. Genie in a Lamp. The genie will make you choose between two things. Each choice has both a good and a bad effect. The chance of getting a bad effect to a good effect is about 3 to 2. So, you get about 3 bad events to every 2 good ones.

3. Chemistry Set. Most of the potions you can make with this have a bad effect on your little Sim. A couple of examples... The light green potion ruins all of your Sim's Needs except Room. The yellow potion causes a permanent reversal of your Sim's personality. That's PERMANENT. So if you created a nice, outgoing, active, playful Sim, you will now have a grumpy, shy, lazy, serious Sim. Isn't this fun?

4. Alien Abductions. There is a telescope that can be used to increase a Sim's Logic Skill. Unfortunately, there is a chance of your Sim being abducted by Aliens. Getting abducted by Aliens will mess up your Sim's personality...never to return to normal.

5. Voodoo Doll. Used to beat up someone currently in the house. Really. What were they thinking?

6. Servo. The most expensive item in the game. Costs ยง15,000. Is he worth it? He can cook, clean, repair, etc. But, you must activate him EVERY time you want to do something. You could probably do the thing yourself in the time you were taking to turn him on to do it! If he automatically sensed a mess, or something to repair, went out and cleaned it all on his own, then he would be worth it. He can't and he's not.

So, why should you have the Livin' Large expansion pack? Well. there are some new objects that are worth having. I especially like the new dresser that allows you to preview your Sim's outfit so you can bypass it if you don't like it. But the main reason you should get this expansion pack is so you can use all the downloads that are available on the various websites devoted to the game. One website I recommend is The Sims Resource. (I'm not allowed to give the URL but your favorite search engine should be able to locate it for you).

The Sims Resource website has some wonderful programs and objects you can download that will not only make your Sims happy, but will also make YOU happy. For example, there is an Edit program that will allow you to keep your Sim's relationships at 100 without you having to call their friends over ever again. There is a bookcase that will improve your Sim's Cooking and Mechanical skills very quickly. There is a mirror that will do the same for Charisma. There is an exercise machine that will not only improve body skill very quickly but it will actually INCREASE your Sim's Energy instead of lowering it! (If you get nothing else, get this! No more afternoon naps! When your stay-at-home Sim's energy gets low, just go hit the exercise machine for a few seconds...and Wow! Energy bar competely green and maybe picked up another Body skill point! This one piece of equipment allows your Sim more time to study her skills and, also, it really helps her out if she is taking care of a new baby! Do get this...it's amazing how it changes the game for the better. It's called the "brawny boy exercise machine". You will love it! It's funky looking but who cares!) And, there is an Espresso machine that will max out ALL of your Sim's needs every time you use it. Of course, all of this is cheating (big time!), but, hey, they're there if you want to use them (or need them). It's just a game and we're having fun! Right?

Anyway, though, you really need this expansion pack to use many of the things that you might want to download. After all, you don't HAVE to experience any of the things that were listed above...except for those blasted ROACHES!

I have all the sims games so far(including hot date) and this one hit an alltime low. many people thought that this game was better than house party but what they did not consider is the truth. This game was deffinitly better than house party if it had WORKED!!! This game made lots of problems for many people. My version did not even work until house party was instaled. this is the only expantion pack that caused so many problems for people. So if you really want to buy this game make sure that you keep the box and every thing because you have a 50-50 chance of this game not working

Really Good Add-On

The Sims Livin' Large is a great add-on for The Sims. There are new carrer tracks like musician, journalist, and hacker. There are also more items you can buy like a vibrating bed, electric guitar, and there more wallpaper to choose from. Another cool feature is buying a robot to help around the house. Kinda like the maid on the Jetsons! Finally there are more neighborhoods to build houses on. This is a great add-on. One word of advice when making wishes with the magical lamp be careful...

More fun with the Sims

The Livin' Large expansion pack gives you more jobs (such as Hacker or Slacker), more house items (tribal masks and magic lamps), more skins (you can play Romeo & Juliet, or Sherlock & Watson), and more opportunities for mischief (several items can change your life when used). It also has 5 more neighborhoods (mostly blank) for more saved games.

However, I will agree with the parent who noted that this expansion pack isn't really appropriate for children, as it has some questionable additions (the vibrating bed, as well as many occultic "magical" items). Maybe EA should come out with a Livin' Clean expansion pack that has job tracks such as Seminary Student (eventually becomes the pope?)? :)

This expansion pack revitalizes The Sims when you may be tired of the same old situations, and gives you many more fun options for play. I'd highly recommend it for any mature player who LOVES The Sims and is ready to kick it up a notch.

Livin' It Up

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 6

Livin' Large wasn't bad, but I worship it compared to Vacation as it's got variety. Livin' Large has new items concentrated in the different ways of construction of a house. Lots of new doors, windows, wall textures and roofs are added as well as decoration items to go with the theme. I use the medieval theme a lot! It even includes the Love Bed, abduction of Sims are now possible through frequent use of the telescope, and Grim Reapers appear to decide the fate of your close-to-dead Sim who you can only save by beating it to a game of Stone-Papper-Scissors (cute).

Livin' Large definately enhances the game, and it's absence would affect the game greatly unlike some other expansion packs I could mention.

Two thumbs up

Livin Large added on to the fun of The Sims. It had more interesting clothes, and fun items. But, it took a long time to install the game. It took the most time patching the sims. It was worth the wait though. New items like the wallpapers and carpets made it fun to design themed houses. However, after awhile it became boring, and I stopped playing it. But, it is still fun to help the sims reach their goals, or watch them ruin their lives. :-)

I first played Sims at my Grandma's house. And I was instantly addicted to it. Controling the actions of all the sims was very fun, and seeing how they acted was also cool. I would recomend this game for ages 8 and up since there is death, crooks and such. But is overall a great game. I know I will be buying the expanson pack right away.

If you ever thought you were slightly bored on the original Sims, fear not! This expansion pack will provide plenty of entertainment for hours. The new furnishings and carpet are very funky and odd. There are also alot of gothic additions to everything from doors to wallpaper. There is one thing you must be careful of. That is what you download. Be sure to only download items from thesims.com (the maxis official site). Your computer will freeze if you download infected objects. At thesims.com, be sure to download the clown catcher, or you will never get the tragic clown out of your house. Be sure to get this game!
