A True Evolution of a Great Series

After reading all the other reviews, I had to add my own.

I've been playing Mega Man games since I was 3 years old (literally, since the series started). Every time a new game came out, I was always excited about playing it. When the X series came out, I wasn't sure about the change from the traditional Megaman storyline. But, despite my initial misgivings, the game was awesome. I experienced a similar misgiving with Megaman Zero. But, the game exceeded my initial expectations.

Now, to X7. I had two major complaints at first. The first one is that the 3D camera system can, at times, get in the way of the view. The second is that, in a game called Megaman X7, you have to unlock Megaman X. Before too long, however, I was able to cope with both of these gripes. The camera issue could be compensated for by being a more bit cautious while fighting, or by having a quicker response time to the bullets (especially the Mets, which had a tendency to hide behind other enemies and take potshots at you). As for the issue of having to unlock Megaman X, when I started using him I understood why. The X Buster is insanely powerful, with even the uncharged plasma shots dealing more damage then Axl with two power chips.

Another complaint that I've heard is Tornado Tonion. A gag boss is as common in Megaman games as anything else. Let's face it, in X1 Chill Penguin wasn't that threatening. The same with Clown Man from Megman 8. He's designed as comic relief. The absurdity of it is part of the entertainment.

Then, there's the rather loud complaint about the voices. Give me a break, guys! At least X doesn't sound like a girl, and Zero isn't constantly out of breath. I'd like to take a little bit at a time. The fact that the cut scenes are all spoken, whether they're static or animated, is also an improvement.

The complaints over this X game, like X5 and X6, will continue, and loudly. Although I haven't yet gotten the chance to play either, I will soon. However, X games keep coming out, so most people must still be pleased with the series? And, when Megaman X8 comes out, you can bet that I'll go buy it, too.

Hope its good

okey, let me make it clear that i have never played X7, but have read about it. i don't know much of the plot, but i read that there is a new style of play or somthing and theres a new character as well to play as named Axl. They said (in Electronic Gaming Monthly) that this game isn't that great, but i'm still gonna try it out any way, but I just hope its better then Megaman X6 (thank goodness I bought Megaman Battle Network(another great game) over X6 3 years ago(i think)and glad i didn't regret it). I also i hope they start thinking of better types of bosses (an onion named Tornado Tonion....?). I'm not saying this game is bad, but I hope its good. hope this helps, though I doubt it.

Why, Capcom... Why?

Never in my life have I wanted to beat an MMX game just to take it back. The control is horrendously tedious and other aspects that made the first six great translate poorly to the PS2. Surely on his 15th birthday of all times should MegaMan have to avoid such lackluster treatment. Believe me, it looks great, but once you've played it, the charm wears thin.

In short, should've been great. Isn't.

a crying shame

ever since i was about 5 years old, megaman has been my favorite videogame. I started wih megaman 7 and was instantly hooked! As the series went on it was nearing its peek. meg man X was insanely good, great powerups, and o so much mroe to collect, as was X2, and especially the ultra rare, 125 dollar X3. The trnslation to the next gen consoles is usually the ultimate down fall of great side scrolling, old school shooter, and this is no exception. Megaman had some undoubtedly rough spots, what with megaman legends, and megaman 64, things were really looking down. Then capcom graced us with megaman X4, good ol' side scrolling fun, and megaman was good again for a brief shining moment. Then again the quality began to slip with X5 and 6, and X7 is definately the low point.

the problem with this game is that megaman was never meant to be a 3D expierience, it just doesnt work. The game has terrible controls, average graphics, and infuriates you past the point of caring anymore. Megaman should frusterate you, but before it fueled you to do better, now it just pisses you off and causes a lot of broken controllers. The megaman anniversery edition just came out, and is an excellent old school finger numbing smash! It features behind the scenes videos, sketches, and even the original TV commercials for megaman 1 through 8, which are available for play, plus 2 Japan only boss rush modes, try that instead, you won't regret it!

what was CAPCOM thinking when they tried to make a mega man x game 3d??? the thing i ALWAYS liked about the mega man x series, was it ALWAYS kept the "traditional" side scrolling theme! i always liked that, they were the only ones who knew it was about game play and not 3d graphics. i put the emphasiz on "were"! this is horrible, i cant believe they made it into 3d graphics. not only is it not as appealing!, but it ALSO makes it hard to see enemies that are coming your way. thats what i LOVED about mega man x6, it was still the traditional REAL side scroller. i cant believe they broke this "tradition!"

Rant from a LONG-time loyal fan...

In some ways I was satisfied by this game. It's not actually fun but at least Capcom finally got this series moved to the PS2, and they're willing to try some new things with the series, although having some bosses that aren't always these ridiculous animal guys isn't one of them. On the other hand they've lost all interest in the storyline. Even though it's good that X finally quit those bloodthirsty "Irregular/Maverick Hunters", this game doesn't really address any of the events of the past games. What about the issue of human-reploid inequality? I mean, in Mega Man X5 you killed "Axle the Red" over a misunderstanding (or because he was looting or he just really hates the Maverick Hunter's methods, depending on when you fight him and who you fight him with). There are many situations like this in the past several games especially, where you hunt a reploid over small disputes or because of suspicion without evidence (remember how Sigma manipulated you into destroying all of Repliforce in X4?)

And where's the links tying this series to the Megaman Legends series? Since they had to go and hint at it they should just go ahead and do it! Actually this game doesn't really seem to be connected to X5 and X6 either! Except for the fact that Sigma is back. Big Surprise! He's ALWAYS back!

2&1/2 stars. (**1/2)

Solid move to PS2, but needs work

Mega Man X7 is an attempt on the PS2 with 3-D/2-D gameplay. I'll sum it up: the game is good, and a step in the right direction, but it needs work in terms of play control, and level design.

Anyway, relax people, and move on. Capcom knows what fans didn't like about this game, and are correcting it with MMX8. Take a look at what X8 will feature:
1. It will be returning to its roots: X8 will be 2-D
2. The production team will be the old one that worked on MMX1-5.
3. Something will "happen" to Sigma.
4. Axl will be revealed to be more than just a simple reploid, and a vital part of the series.

Wait for X8 and quit complaining

An Utter Disgrace to the Series

Since I was little, Mega Man X has always thrilled me with its constant action and original bosses. I liked being able to find armor upgrades for X and I thought Zero was cool. Capcom improved upon the series bit by bit with X2, X3, and X4. But then, X5 came out. It was fun, but they tried to make the game too complicated with special upgrades and stuff. Also, the names of the bosses stopped being the same. (Duff McWhalen???) But still, it was fun. X6 continued making weird names for bosses, and had a crappy storyline. But it was still decent.

But then, here's where X7 comes in. Capcom tried to please fans with something new and original and fell flat on its face. I hated this game so much I sold it to Game Crazy. Here's why: the controls are sloppy, the new character (Axl) is retarded and pointless, you can't even be X until much later in the game, the bosses are unimaginitive...the list goes on.

So, in closing, avoid this game like the plague. Hopefully, Capcom will hear our complaints and return to the original 2D games we love so much.

It's just lousy...

I think the reviewer tkdmateo summarizes this game very nicely. Capcom's first 3D outing for the X series probably looked good on paper, but has several critical flaws in practice.

Perhaps the only three credits I can give the game are the imaginative boss battles, the overall look of the characters and stages, and the simplification of the gameplay mechanics. Capcom successfully ported the look of the X games into 3D, which was no small feat. The bosses are also generally fun to fight and sport a wide array of attacks. As far as simplification goes, by X6 the series has become cluttered on new concepts that only got in the way. X7 does away with the useless "Nightmare System" and the rule where you have to collect all parts of an armor prior to being able to use it.

And that's about where everything good about the game ends.

The controls are very sluggish for a game of this time. The protagonists of the previous X games were lithe and agile. Here, it seems as if they have anvils tied to their oversized boots. Never does the control flow smoothly from one action to the next. Wall jumping, a trademark of the X series, is almost useless in this game, with confused level designers allowing you to do it on some surfaces, but mysteriously not others.

The gameplay is broken up into 2D and 3D segments. The 2D segments essentially have the protagonists marching from left to right in a 3D environment on rails. If you think this would be anything like Mega Man, you would be sadly mistaken. Auto-aiming takes all of the fun out of the game. Couple that with auto-fire and you can literally hold the fire button down for an entire stage and do reasonably well. The 3D environment, on the other hand, benefits from the auto-aim because the camera is so fidgety. Only in some cases do the designers allow you to manually rotate the camera. And the clunky controls, as mentioned before, make these stages a bore.

X7 is ultimately a game with no apparent sense of purpose. It doesn't know what it wants to be, 2D or 3D, and instead winds up implementing and botching both. As a longtime fan of Mega Man, I slogged through this one, but if it were any other game, I would have given up just past the intro stage. Moreover, I would not have bought this title knowing what I know now.

With the failures of X5, X6, and X7, Capcom has destroyed the Mega Man X series for everyone except the hardcore fans. Let it die already.
