I was really looking forward to a baseball game for the PS2 but I was unable to determine which one to go for: High Heat, All-Star, Triple Play, etc. I read a review saying that the PS2 High Heat had franchise mode as well as editing players so I decided to go with High Heat. Here is what I think of the game:
The Good: I like the pitching a lot. You can intentionally pitch balls and the pitches don't always go where you want them creating some realism. The fielding is also fairly realistic and while you can make great plays, you can't make the unrealistic, super-spectacular ones. You can call your pitches so, hopefully, if you guess right, you can hit the ball much better than normal. Double switches are possible. Umpires can blow calls if you choose to have a varying strike zone. (While sometimes frustrating, it is realistic) There is infield fly rule. On infield pop-ups, the pitcher points up to the ball.(while this doesn't really do anything for the game, it's a perk.) Player arguments on close calls. Ground balls will change direction if they hit the mound. Players actually make realistic amounts of errors. They give a complete boxscore and game summary at the end of each game. Trades are possible in season mode--haven't tried it out yet tho.
The Bad: There is NO franchise mode and NO player editing that I have found. The announcers are terrible--there is a great pause between the sentence and the player/team. e.g. That's 2 runs for.....the Braves. This can get annoying but then again, at times, it is comical. While I have been pegged before, I have yet to find out how to intentionally bean someone--Hey, what can I say, the computer beaned Maddux in the World Series...I wanted to retaliate. There is no bench clearing brawls or fights of any kind that I have found. Enron Field is a pain in the behind to hit HR's in--you have to clear the train in left-center.(there is also no hill in center, just a change in color) While the keeping of stats in a season is nice, there is a problem with the stats in playoffs. The players do not "qualify" by having enough AB's so you have to put up with all the other players who have 1 AB. Furcal was able to pull of an inside the park HR but was not given credit for it. Computer pitchers fatigue a lot slower than human pitchers. Some players are unrealistic in their abilities--would be nice to edit if there was an edit player mode.
I don't think there is a great deal of replay value here-Just a season mode and exhibition mode. Overall, I give it 3 stars for all the points given. Hopefully this helps people decide if they want the game or not.

This game is almost perfect! The only flaws are that there is no Create-a-Player, and not very many modes(exhibition, al-star game, season), and its difficulty levels are way too easy. Except for that last flaw, this is about as real as baseball can get on a console, right up there with N64' ASBaseball '01. The graphics are very good, but not as good compared to ASBaseball'02 on PS2. You can also strike a man out with the right pitcher, but I hit four home ones in two innings on the highest difficulty level available.
Not so great

I had high expectatipns for this game but am a little let down.First, the graphics are awful for a PS2 game, But since this is a baseball game graphics aren't everything. Where this game falls short is in the pitcher- batter interface where you sometimes have no control over where you pitch the ball and where some pitches(curveballs) start about 3 feet over your head. The camera options are ok pretty standard but there are no gameplay options excepy season, exhibition, and all star. No create-a-player or team or franchise mode. Best thing about the game is a 9 inning game can be played in less than 20 minutes and this is not a homerfest.

Okay, I'm sold... I have to be honest that I hated this game at first, but I'm at the mid-point of a season, and this is by-far the most realistic baseball sim out there. It is not without its imperfections. The game is hurt by poor base-running controls, unrealistic curveballs, and, worst of all, the computer will allow you to complete any trade you propose (it allowed me to trade Clay Bellinger for Juan Gonzalez... don't worry, I was just testing it out, I didn't keep Gonzo on the Yankees... even though it'd be nice... just in case George Steinbrenner or Brian Cashman are reading this), but all-in-all, the game is fantastic. I don't have players with .500 batting averages or 50 homers; neither do any of the computer's teams. The game is challenging (I'm playing at the All-Star level, which is the second hardest). I'm playing with the Yankees (of course), and have been in a race for first place with the Red Sox all season. So I would like to rescind my previous review. No, I haven't played any of the other baseball games so I really have no point of reference, but what can I say... The game just grew on me. Go YANKS!!

Ahh, baseball. Yes, it truly is americas favorite passtime. And when someone actually makes a GOOD video gamr out of it, I'm happy as a schoolgirl with cotton candy. And this game is quite good. The games batting system is very realistic. It has yet to be realized realistic physics of how far the ball goes when it hits curtain spots. There's not really that much that you can really say about this game that describes how fun it is. Problems with this game are few. The graphics are very poor and it does not use the analog feature. If you have any interest in baseball i think you will enjoy this game.
Baseball reality, just missing more....

I actually love this game, again I am a huge baseball fan! I had this game from last year on the PC and love the great realism. I would not always hit that 3 run HR to win the game, and the ace could have that bad day and give up 5 runs in the 2nd inning. This same goes for this game. I have owned it for weeks. I even had a player ejected for throwing at a batter after a HR! The stats page is difficult but has LOTS of great numbers! I also wish they would have left the HR derby the PC version had... but this game is much better in gameplay and realism than the competition, I always rent them before to compare before I buy. Baseball fans will love this game!

Well, I've purchase HH2000, SSHH2001, SSHH2001CE, and HH2002 all for Playstation and PC. Now, I'm going to be honest the gameplay is much better on PC than Playstation. The graphics are alot better and the games run alot smoother. But 3DO came out with HH2002 on PS2. I just had to have it. Now I'm not going to lie. If you put this game on rookie it's like a walk in the park, but if you get the difficulty on the right level. This game will have you on the edge of your seat. I love playing HH baseball that is the reason why I buy some many of their products. But this one for PS2 has to be the best I've seen. Sure they lack Ichiro and Spencer, but they've substitute that take their place. This game is a must buy for serious gamers. If you love stats-like gameplay go purchase this one today. If you're in for the graphics and multioptions, stick with TP2002.

I have never been a fan of the EA Baseball series. For some reason, EA and other gamemakers cannot produce realistic baseball games. But much to my surprise, High Heat Baseball 2002 is more realistic than any other baseball games that I have ever played.
I love the pitching aspect of a baseball game. If a game produces no-hitters, shut outs or low scoring games, then that in itself is worth it for me. Although the pitcher-batter interface is very stripped down looking at first (all you have to do is use the D-pad to line up your bat in the vicinity of the pitch and time your swing), after playing a few games, you realize that it really is tough to hit against good pitching. The best part about hitting is the physics of the ball off the bat. It's very rare to hit a ball to a certain spot in the same game.
Fielding and running are pretty realistic as well. Although your fielders seem very sluggish at first, you get used to their speed.
Computer AI seems very adequet and it's adjustable to suit your needs. I'm competing at the All-Star level (there are two harder levels), currently and winning about half of the games against really good teams.
Two major complaints. The graphics are absolutely astrocious. The game would be 1000 times better if the overall graphics was even moderately good. If you want a good-looking game and that is important to you, then don't get this one. Second complaint is that you can't create players. While I'm quite happy with the current rosters, it is ashame that I can't play with Ichiro, Pujols and other players who are having an unbelievable season.
I do wish that someone would come up with a baseball game that is more complex. For instance, dodging a tag when sliding, actually making a tag by waving your mitt, bench clearing brawls when a player gets beaned, arguing calls and getting tossed, blocking the plate with your catcher, timing a catch with a button, field condition as a factor (rain, drizzle, extreme wind, snow, fog, twilight), hanging pitches under pressure and when fatigued, and using a momentum bar to help the team, amd balks. I may be asking too much, but a true baseball sim should be able accomplish every detail of the real game. I can dream, can't I???
Anyway, High Heat Baseball 2002, in my mind, is the best baseball simulation since Bottom of the 9th for PS (most of you never even heard of it but that's okay). Definitely worth while for true baseball geeks.
It's about 2 years behind the rest but fun.

I have been enjoying this game quite alot. It is disappointing that the graphics are in some ways very lacking. But the fielding is very east which is a huge plus and batting isn't too difficult. It leaves the player able to concentrate on the game rather than on the mechanics. I like to do a full draft and the game doesn't appear to have to do it, but it does have a trade feature. If 3DO can keep the playability of this game and improve the graphics and options then they could have a real winner. EA Sports has had a very poor outing this time with its baseball game and there is an opening for 3DO to fill the void. Its not a great game, but it is good. Very good for PS1 not as good for the power of the PS2.

As a long time triple play fan, i was somewhat reluctant to even consider purchasing a baseball game that wasn't made by EA. However, I did and I a very satisfied. This is the most realistic baseball game I have played, its about time developers concentrate on the game and strategy of baseball, rather than the homerun loving fan. In triple play, nearly every hit would be a homerun, sure you would get base hits, but not enough to score consistently. You would be able to score 10-15 runs a game due to the fact that you would hit 5+ homers a game. The box scores sucked, the AI had no common sense, and Buck was an idiot! All you triple play fans, need to snap out of it and realize that High Heat is taking over the ranks. The graphics could use some improvement, but the gameplay is what it is all about! I have noticed that High Heat is getting a few low rankings, and they are probably coming from die hard triple play fans that refuse to see, that the EA series is quickly falling from the top(with the exception of madden). High Heat is where the money is, play on playa!
