Great Comedy, standard gameplay

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

If you've enjoyed hack'n'slash games of the past, you are going to love this comedic twist on the genre.

Bard's Tale takes the tried and true principles of hack'n'slash gameplay (top down perspective action rpg) and gives it life with great comedy. They lampoon all the classic rpg cliches. And with the voice of Cary Elwes (from the Princess Bride and Men in Tights) and Tony Jay, the voice dialogue is perfectly executed.

The gameplay can get boring at times, a downfall for this style of game as it becomes very repetitive. But unlike similar games in the genre, this one does give you a reason to keep playing, the excellent story.

I would definitely make sure you are TEEN, as suggested by the ESRB rating. Some of the comedy is sexually suggestive. But nothing blatantly over the top. If you want a fun game that doesn't take itself to seriously, this game is a breath of fresh air!

Funniest game ever since Monkey Island!!!

I have been waiting for this game for quite a while...and know what?
It's just what I hoped it would be and even more!

As I started playing the game I just could not quit laughing. The Bard is a dirty ol' [...] and will say some of the nastyest and funniest things ever.

But let's examine the game:

1) Graphics 8/10: could be better, but what you need is there and many features are way above genre average.
2) Sound 10/10: FX and music are very good, voice acting is EXCEPTIONAL.
3) Gameplay: 8/10 very good but some overall flaws.
*For one the saving system is a nuisance and I don't understand while it is still around (find the tome and save only at the "tome point").
*The fighting system is ok (if somewhat more difficult than your typical Baldur's Gate for console) and you must not only rely on your sword but mostly on your summons and on finding out how to complement each other skills. You can't just go around bashing everything to pieces.
*The camera however is a bit of a pain. Way up in the sky, you see your character from above with no possibility of angle changing. Sometimes with trees around it gets somewhat frustrating.
*The "answer interaction" system is great and more games should adopt it. When you talk with people you don't have a set of "phrases" to choose from, you simply choose your attitude. This will affect how non playing characters (i.e. those you interact with) will perceive your Bard and how they will treat him. Being rude pays off sometimes.
4) Storyline 20 out of 10: AHAHAAHAHAHA... this game will just have you laughing, and laughing and laughing. The story is funny, very original and well delivered to you by a sarcastic narrator. I won't spoil the game here, you'll have to believe me. Just play the first 5 minutes and the laughing will start.

Bottomline:
Overall I would suggest this game to:
1. anybody who likes or has a grasp for RPGs.
2. anybody who likes humorous games
3. RPGers tired of the old cliche' games
4. all fans of non-politically correctness
5. any old school RPG gamer. The more RPGs you've played in the past the more you will laugh here.

In general I'd suggest this game to anybody who likes games. It's just fun to see something original and enjoyable.

This game is very funny...for real!

Its like the best of Diablo II, mix it with Baldurs Gate add some Champions of Norath, the humor of the Princess Bride and you got yourself one of the funniest most entertaining games ever made. That main character got a wicked tongue and mouth quick to insult and to get him in problems. You can choose which pact you want to take evil or good by certain actions.

Coolest and Funniest RPG

This game is entertaining and very funny. As you play you can also change the outcome of events by changing your answers. You create magical creatures to help you fight. All to save a princess that is willing to please you upon freeing her. A very witty game that is also easy to play but some of my best entertainment I've ever had playing a game. Although it is good to remember some content seems for adults only.

Great gameplay & story line

Probably one of the best game story lines I have ever seen or played. The Bard is a major smart ass and is your typical macho male, all he thinks about is sex and beer. Game play is sort of challenging at parts, but not too hard and confusing. It won't leave you frustrated and turning off the console. The visual aspects of the game could have been better, but sound quality is great. You got to love the little green guys and their random songs and the undead break dancing was genius. The freaking skeleton tells the zombies that they "just go served". Hilarious. Great game and will look forward to something similar to this. Only downfall is that it is one player. We need more two player games like this and Champions of Norath.

probably the best game ive bought in awhile...

wow, is all i have to say about this game, really... It was fun from start to finish, a complete blast.

STORY - The storyline is pretty good. The Bard is just some guy that can conjure up animals, people, and elementals. You start off as him conjuring a rat to scare a bar owner chic and make it go away for a meal... and of course you hit on her, blah blah... its hilarious... then you get into the missions and you (along with all the corpses you run into during the game!) have been labeled as "the chosen one". What have you been chosen for? you've been chosen to free the princess... Along the way you run into all sorts of enemies and allies... The best part are these little trowl's that sing and dance like oompa-loompas! HILARIOUS!!! Eventually, you'll make it to the princess and have THREE endings to choose from (either choose to save her, leave her, or side with the guy imprisoning her).

CHARACTERS - Of course you only play as the Bard, but you can conjure up 16 different beings. All of these are useful (you have a healer, a trap finder, elementals, an archer, a bodyguard etc etc). and on top of that you can call up the main bosses that you have defeated along the way using crystals that you pick up... A very original concept, if you ask me!

WEAPONS - There are alot of weapons in the game, you can, like always, pick them up or buy them. This game has a slight Diablo feel to it when it comes to the weapons, because you have to upgrade to use certain weapons such as the Flails or 2-handed swords.

HILARITY - This game incorporates the great concept of choosing what you say... normally that would be a so-so thing, but in this one you can either be A) nice to people, or B) rude and sarcastic! (of course i prefer the second, but i would watch using it, because it will get you in alot of trouble OR make you have to pay your way 10fold!). Everything the Bard says is hilarious. He is just SO politically incorrect you wont stop laughing until he stops talking!

GAMEPLAY/CONTROLS - the controls and gameplay of this game are great... the only thing that confused me was WHY is there a jump button when you NEVER use it?! The coolest thing is that the blocking is more realistic than most games, you have to block RIGHT when the enemy attacks! Which is alot better than most games where you just hold the block button down and nobody can hurt you... thats weak.

COMPLAINTS - um... yeah, i dont think i have any! i would have liked the game to have been a little bit longer, but thats expected from me, i say that about every game, so disregard! so really, i have no complaints at all!

CONCLUSION - this game is probably a must get for any gamer. i dont really like games like this, but this one is definetly one of my favorite games EVER now. get it and have yourself a good laugh! (also, if you DO buy it, when you get to the end and can choose from the different endings, save first and when you beat it DONT save over your data or else you wont be able to go back and see the other endings... I personally suggest choosing "me" first from the endings, happy gaming!)

This was a fun game. Game play was not necessarily the best, but the comic relief made the game very enjoyable. The price was well worth the game play value.

Best Game Since the Champions and Baldurs Gate Games!

This Is one of the few pleasures in life.... Reviewing a GREAT Game! its almost exactly like the baldurs gate titles but with a few subtle changes.
first Welcome change is the fact that every time you get new armor/weapon etc instead of having to navigate menus and equip it the Game Equips the Best you have INSTANTLY! i love that! graphics are directly on par (hard to believe this game is so old) graphics hold up against most baldurs gates and champoins games easily highly detailed monsters GREAT VOICE ACTING and STORY! THE SOUND IS UNBELIEVABLE!!! AS IS THE ACTING!! cant stress this enough its hilarious! not sutable for younger children due to some language crude humor (ala snarky haha) and quite a few things the little kiddies might not be ready to see yet (you have been warned) overall if you own any of the champions or baldurs gate DA games this is a MUST OWN for you then. i bought it on a whim never having played it and how refreshing this game is buy it now before its no longer available!
its a 5 star masterpiece!

This is the funniest video game I have ever played!!!

And I have played many many video games in my time. All of the characters you interact with react differently depending on how you act to them, and how you've acted in the past. And most of them are very funny.

The controls take a little getting used to, but are not difficult to master. As with the other reviews, the camera angles are the biggest downfall of this game, but the content is more than enough to make up for it.

I found myself cracking up, sometimes to the point where I had to stop for a while, because I was crying from laughing so hard. Overall a VERY good game. Thumbs up!

Humor makes this otherwise average game top-notch.

It's an action RPG. So far as game play or graphics, there's nothing special about this nowadays. It would deserve a 3 or 3.5 out of 5 at the most. But the humor! The writers know ALL the RPG cliches* and mock them without mercy. On levels that might take 30-45 minutes to finish I'll play for 3 or 4 hours just to try all the different story lines and catch all the jokes. The humor pushes it to an easy 5 star rating.

If you have a sense of humor and enjoy RPGs you need to play this!

*for example, the obligatory Lava Level is NAMED the obligatory Lava Level.
