Oct 2006 and it's still a great game.

I just reloaded and played this remarkable game again and it's still as fun and challenging as it was back a long long time ago. The graphics are still as strong as many of todays standards in my book. In fact it was a game ahead of it's time.

It works on XP by the way.

This is an RTS Adventure Action RPG type of game in my opinion. Each choice takes you in a different direction every mission thru mission 4. You can choose different gods up to this point and then they start to dwindle to only a few choices, some will change you back to good if you are playing evil. There are 10 missions total that I counted. The 10th mission being the grand daddy of them all and if you can beat mission 10 in one setting I will give you a cookie. I remember I beat it years ago, but, I am still having a hard time beating it again now. That's how tough it is. So, if you think you are some RTS guru I challenge you to try and beat it.

This is one of those games that needs a re-release. Not a remake, but, some new advertising and a re-release of what I feel is one of the best rts games out there. I hate rts games for the most part, but, this one is not like all the others. The resource gathering is where you are, you have to collect souls from the dead creatures of your opponent and your own souls as well from your dead creatures. There's only a couple of buildings to build (one for more energy and one for creating creatures closer to where you are on the map), there's no need for peasants or gathering wood or gold or iron or any of that silliness. It's 100% action "where you are".

Creating an army is nothing more than clicking a hotbutton provided you have the energy and the number of souls required to build them. Once again you create them where you are. You want a dragon, press hotkey and in a few seconds (spell time to cast) wallah you have a dragon where you are. You also have these little funny looking guys called nanowhores who as long as they are with you and near you will stream energy from your manoliths (this is one of the contstuction buildings) to you faster than if you didn't have them. They are really important and if they die you won't gain energy as fast to cast your spells or collect enemy souls.

One of the greatest aspects of the game is your army formations. There's so many different ways you can use it. Each unit can be told to do a specific formation for you or for any other unit. For instance I could put one strong unit in Phalanx (sp) behind me and then phalanx another unit or units behind that unit. I would usually do this to keep my manawhores well behind and out of the battle. Then you can put units in skirmish mode that will go out in front of you, then you can skirmish more units in front of those and skirmish more in front of those and on an on. You could have a continuous line of units skirmied in front of one another. You can also do line formations and semi circles and complete circles. It's unbelieveable all the different types of formations you can setup. You can also tell units to stand/guard at a specific spot, they don't always have to be in the formation. You can hotkey them in groups as well just like most rts games and give them group orders. Since many have "special abilities" it's a good idea to keep them in their own groups.

It uses the good ole rock paper scissors format in combat. And you will have to deal with superior forces from about mission 4 onward. But, if you use careful strategy and tactics you can overcome the odds in all the missions, even the 10th one.

The single player multiplayer aspect of the game is just as good. You can pick maps, even make your own and the AI is daunting and challenging in everyone of them. It's fast and relentless and it uses a progression feature thru out the mission. You'll start off with level 1-3 units then progressively go up to level 9 units. So, if you like challenging AI's this game will give it to you in the skirmish mode of play.

This game is a STEAL nowadays with the price that it is. It certainly is equal to anything being delivered out there in the RTS genre today in fun and challenge. I recommend this to anyone who might have an interest in rts and even those who HATE RTS, this is one of those I even think you will enjoy. It's just that much fun and so different from anything else out there.

I really don't understand why this game wasn't popular back when released. It was so far ahead of it's time in the way it plays. I guess the marketing wasn't strong enough or the player feedback. There were lots of rts games saturating the market at that time. It just got overlooked and shouldn't have imho. Give it a try now, you'll be glad you added it to your gaming library.

Can a Game get any BETTER?!?!?!?

In my entire gaming experince I have never seen a game with such outstanding graphics, unique gameplay, enticing story line, and a great sense of HUMOR! This game is a sure thing! It will make you laugh and make you just sit in awe at the graphics while your forces are being decimated. This game is a RTS in the fullest. You have five unquie forces to control which is awesome. A major enticing tool of the game is allowing to switch alliances in the game to get creatures and spells from any god that you worship!! SACRIFICE IS A MUST BUY!!!!!

You'll sacrifice sleep to sacrifice a few monsters!

I love this game. It has to be "the best" RTS game on the market right now. The 3D graphics are stellar, the gameplay doesn't skip a beat, and the storyline is clear and well-written. You'll never get bored while doing the various tasks of whichever God you choose to work for. And with an endless amount of possible endings, the replay value is a definite 10.

One of the most original games I have ever played

Can't decide what type of genre you want to play? Role playing? Strategy? Action?

Whatever your preference, this game is for you. Intelligently, it uniquely combines all aspects of all genres so that you're pretty much commanding a small army up close and personal. I'm surprised that this game never got to be well known.

It's a shame that this game is pretty much unheard of; All who have played it seemed to immensely enjoy it. I sometimes wish this game was more popular than it was.

Awkward controls and out-dated gameplay by 2008 standards

This well-reviewed game hasn't withstood the years as well as some other games of the same era (Homeworld comes to mind.) I'm a great fan of strategy games, but I just couldn't get into this game.

The minimap is small and difficult to use, but it becomes a major focus of your game, as the main screen - your third person over-the-shoulder view - really only helps you in the immediate tactical fight you're in. I found it hard to visually distinguish between some types of units, and having to click on them to identify them was quite annoying.

If you're a fan of Battlezone style gameplay, then by all means, give this game a shot. But there is a reason the experimental hybrid strategy-action genre died away in 2001 or so; it just isn't as fun as a pure RTS or pure action game. Instead you've got more successful hybrids flourishing - like grand strategy / RTS hybrids (Star Wars: Empire at War, Sins of a Solar Empire), RPG / Action (Oblivion, Bioshock), or Racing / Action / RPG (Grand Theft Auto.)

Interplay has done it again!

flying eyeballs, powerful gods, and doomed souls is what leads this fast paced game to victory!

This game is awesome, not only does it have beautiful graphics but the gameplay itself is awesome. Though combat can get pretty confusing at times will all the creatures running about, and volcanoes and other spells shooting every which way. It just adds to the excitement of trying to figure out what to do next.

to me, the idea of somone disliking sacrifice is ridiculous.

I have owned Sacrifice for nearly at the time of this writing. It is the single game in which I have never lost interest, despite the fact that my computer is only just above mimimum requirements. I see people who complain about the repetitiveness of the game, despite the glorious graphics which dazzle them at first.

I never had glorious graphics. My framerates have never been but so-so. I have to put up with all sorts of gliches and grunts (alas, there are many). Yet, I am not one to put up with these annoyances. But I do, and only for Sacrifice.

I won't try to describe what I experience in Sacrifice's gameplay, but there is so much tactical and strategic (yes!) depth, that it has consistantly drawn me back to my computer for more. Every 'god', or side, in Sacrifice has a specific set of units, but those units are shelled out on a gradual basis (at different 'levels', depending on how much 'damage' you do in-game. Thus, every 'level' is almost a different game in itself, and each progressive level might totally alter the balance of the game.

Thus, while Sacrifice comes full featured with a flotilla of tactical probabilities, there are also essentially strategic descisions to make. Many military ideas have been included and ingeniusly implemented, like supply lines, for one.

Also, online play is superb (although gamespy servers are far from trustworthy), and the Sacrifice community is great fun. Ive been an active community member in Sacrifice for months upon months, and I now feel as though the 'old usual' people I play with are genuinly my friends.

Those that claim that Sacrifice is 'repetitive', and declare their unfailing allegiance to games such as Starcraft or nearly any other RTS, are merely admitting their inaptitude for strategy/tactics. These are the people who only know how to build up an enormous army and hurl it at their opponent, then gape in disbeleif when their masses of misunderstood and poorly engaged (but seemingly invincible) units fall willy nilly about the feild of battle. Im sorry, but with Sacrifice the days of mindless build orders in RTSs are gone forever. In Sacrifice you must THINK to win. If you think me wrong, come online some day and challenge Symbiosis_Bob to a game. He'll prove you wrong, I'll wager.

Poorly Manufactured and Supported

This game was shipped without an apparently necessary CD-Code on the front of the CD jewel case. I emailed the support line and heard nothing for 2 weeks. I exchanged it for another one and found the same problem. My local store is returning the whole shipment. In the meantime, Shiny entertainment still hasn't gotten back to me. God forbid I need their help with a bug once I actually get to play the game!

This game is amazing. Flat out, no contest in the top five games i've ever played ( and THAT my friend is a feat few games can achieve ) The graphics are amazing, and i get a PERFECT framerate on my duron 600mhz w/ 128ram w/ voodoo 3 3000agp on the high/normal graphics setting in 1024x768 ( 16bpp... i don't know if it does 32bit, and i know my card doesn't so i don't per say care lol ) It could be a run of the mill battlezone2 with magic clone if it wasn't for a few things that really set the game apart. 1: the ability to choose different gods, thereby giving yourself different spells/units 2: multiple endings! yay! it took the gaming industry HOW MANY YEARS to figure out that the appeal of FMV games could be used somewhere else? 3: Once again, i have to talk about the graphics. They are AMAZING! Somewhere between giants and Rune... And they fit just RIGHT for everything. 4: the voice acting. You wouldn't think that voices are that important, but with a game that has this much plot, it IS a kinda big thing for a centaur to SOUND like a centaur ( they used too many low voices though.. fine by me, my speakers like 'em ) plus there is nothing quite like playing as a servent of the god Pyro ( except possibly listening to bevis and butthead ( FIRE FIRE FIRE! ) and crossing bevis with stephen hawking... right, anyways )

The Three Things That You Have To Watch Out For: 1: you MUST use directx8, and UPDATE OPENGL! (e-mail) 2: I couldn't find the CD-Key, and i eventually figured out that it was on the PLASTIC on the OUTSIDE of the CD case, not on a sticker on the case or anything smart like that... so, if you email them (email) and explain, they will probably give you the key.. 3: it's tooooo shoooort! whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! even playing as alla the gods ( allways end up with james or the necro guy.. those are the 2 best final spells ) it just seems too short! even if it DID take me 9 hours to beat the game ( a record.. only serious sam, rune, diablo 2 were all around 9 hours.. )

well anyways, i think you MUST own this game if you have a video card worth crap.
