No Comparision to Tomb Raider!

I just finished playing this game and boy, I can't wait to play it again! The graphics are so well-done and the story-line is interesting and the game play is never boring. So much to do! There are 17 levels to the game and you can choose whether to have the game play really easy to really hard. Just note that you need a 3D Graphics card like 3D Blaster Banshee to play the game. After I finished playing Indy, I went out and bought Tomb Raider cause everyone was comparing the two and was really disappointed. You can't play Indy with those fabulous graphics and then go to Tomb Raider. The only thing the two games have in common is they both jump, climb, etc... I hope Lucas Arts makes more games like Indy.

Having never played a Tomb Raider adventure may have enhanced my utter enjoyment for this wonderful game from LucasArts. Many complaints I've heard is that its too similar to Tomb Raider. Even if it is...SO WHAT! Have fun with it. Its not often that a great computer game with minimal bugs and loads of gameplay enters your life. The level design in this game is some of the best I have ever seen and the puzzles while challenging are not so frustrating you'll wanna shut off your computer (well okay I did two times already and I'm only on level 6). The one complaint I have with the game is combat and the sometimes lack of A.I. You can shoot a guard and if you miss, he'll keep walking like he didn't hear the gun. My advice is to charge them while firing. While this complaint would of been larger if this were an action game, the fact is, its not. Its Indiana Jones and majority of your time you'll be solving puzzles and finding treasures. Sometimes I found it annoying when the game designers just threw in more villains to shoot at because it distracted me while I was exploring. On to the finer points: Did I mention that the game is HUGE! Lucas thankfully threw in a hint mode where when viewing the map an "X" will be displayed to point you where you need to go next. On some levels I needed it. So while it may not win any awards for originality, its one of those rare games that does not leave my computer even when I have stacks of other games waiting to be played. Quit reading this review and buy it! You'll thank me.

Adventure Gaming at it's Best

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is simply a great adventure game. The levels are huge, the puzzles tough and the atmosphere is pure Indiana Jones. Set post WWII, you are in a race against the Russians to find the four pieces of the Infernal Machine-a relic from the ancient tower of Babel. Your quest takes you all over the world including Utah, Egypt and the Phillipines. Along the way you'll encounter sharks, spiders, commies and of course-SNAKES! The game relies more on puzzle solving and exploring than shot-em up battles, and most of the puzzles are excellent (if not frustrating)! All-in-all, the game gets the whole Indy feel down to a tee-especially when the familiar theme accompanies a cool use of the bull whip. Any fan of the movies should already have this game and those who love adventure games with great level design and well thought out puzzles should pick it up this instant.

Great to see Indy in action after ten years!

This game is very well crafted and intriguing. The levels are of a grandiose scale. It's a great feeling to all of a sudden stumble into King Nebuchadnezzar's tomb. This game also catches the mood of the movies. At one point, while walking in the dark, you hear chirping sounds, and you look below you to find (eeew!)bugs of rather large proportion. That stays consistent with that one scene in every Indy movie that seems to crawl uneder one's skin. Every move you make or discovery you find is crucial to the story, excluding any feeling of aimless wandering. Its a great way to explore while indoors this cold season!

Is it worth your $20?????

I bought this game cause I had nothing else better to do. The pictures on the back of the box looked cool and I like these type of games. I'm also a big fan of shoot em' up games like Unreal Tournament and Half life and Rogue Spear. But, I also like good adventure games.

I've played the Tomb Raider series and I never liked it for some reason. Like many of the other people have stated earlier, this game does beat Tomb Raider away. I think the graphics are a lot better than tomb raider. I remember Tomb raider's puzzle's were really dumb and the maps were SOOOOOOOOO huge that finding a puzzle was a pain. It's a little of the opposite with Infernal Machine.

Basically you control Indy and you run and Jump and whip and shoot and pick up artifacts for money and solve puzzles. You solve puzzles by pushing things or pulling things or moving things or dropping here and there. The idea is simple, but it's really fun.

Pro's: Nice graphics, nice control (with a Gravis X-terminator), Nice sound, nice puzzles, and good storyline. Many people have complained about how the controls suck. If you have a Gravis X-terminator, you will have no problems. The default buttons are setup up perfectly and you'll never have to touch the keyboard unless you are moving your mouse to save. Also someone said that Indy moves too slow - I have not thought that at all. He runs and jumps with good speed. I'm running on a 450 Mhz Celeron with a VooDoo5500 AGP with 128 MB of RAM on 1024x768 on 32 bit mode and I see no slow downs. I think these people are playing on a keyboard or some lower end gamepad and machine. The puzzles are pretty simple, but not too easy. Most of them are logical, but some I have had to go on the internet and look for walkthrough's for this game. The first time I got this game, it kept me playing for 2 hours. I never play games that long!

Cons: One thing that I found sucky was Indy's aiming. you do have a gun and you can shoot spiders and german commies and stuff, but his aiming is SOOOOOOOo awful! It's like I'm standing point blank in front of a commie and I keep shooting but I keep missing. If you do end up killing something, you're guaranteed to have lost a little health cause Indy's aiming sucks in this game.

Another thing I found sucky was using the whip. I had a hunch you could use the whip to climb. So, I kept using the whip but he kept whipping forward but not up to climb. So I was getting frustrated but I learnt that if you stand in the right position and the camera angle shows where you can latch on.

Another thing that sucked was that I didn't know you could climb brick walls. That frustrated me! I was in this hole and I was like "man, I can't get out!!!!!" Then I read the walkthrough and it turns out that you can climb up brick walls. Go figure!

Those are basically the only cons in the game. FOr Amazon's great price of $20, I think you'll be satisfied. It's on two CD's so it's a long game and worth your money! The game has never crashed on me and it runs smooth. This game makes Tomb Raider look like crap.

More like an Amazing Machine!

Just finished the demo - and if this is any indication of the final game - well the final game will be amazing! More robust than Tomb Raider and Indy branded - a total experience. A must purchase.

Great Game, LucasArts strikes back...

one may think that this game is a rip off of TOMB RAIDER... Heck NO! This game is an INDIANA JONES GAME, the ORIGINAL tomb raider for all of us in tune with movies made before the 90's.

This is an excellent addition to LucasArts long list of great titles. In fact, I think this game is especially significant in the fact that it is an Indy game and not a Star Wars game. One can only hope that it does well enough, so that Lucasarts will develop another one.

And for all of those obsessed with graphics. Remember that Quake 2 had great graphics but a horrible plot and little more than run and gun action. This game is the ultimate puzzle for those who have no experience in the Tomb Raider style games. Not to mention that Indy is way cooler than any rip off chick no matter how good she looks. :)

Talk about more bang for your buck!

I have been an adventure game addict since Myst came out and was concerned the "action" description for this game might prove a disappointment. Not so! This is the only game I immediately turned around and played again. Many, many hours of fun and adventure with Indy. The many levels the player moves through present continually fresh and changing scenarios. The first level gives the player a chance to practice the controls and become prepared for the forthcoming action. I wish all games had the ease and speed of control that this one does. I have to admit though, being an adventure game person, it took some adjustment for me to shoot bad guys and getting bit by a snake or scorpion made me gasp in surprise. But, this IS adventure/action at its best.

Very good

First off, I've got to say that I'm a huge Indiana Jones fan and, as a result, I was very excited to play this game. Having played the Tomb Raider games before this, I was able to jump into the action right away. The control scheme is practically identical. LucasArts did a great job with this game, as they do with all their games. It was a pleasant surprise to see that this game had a plot, something lacking in many action games of this type. The graphics are admittedly weak, but this is not noticeable to the average gamer. Altogether, the graphics are still very nice and suit the game well. The game is quite challenging, and I like the puzzle-based gameplay that LucasArts incorporates in nearly all of their games. This game is, not surprisingly, drawing comparisons to the Tomb Raider series. This is fine, as the game closely resembles the Tomb Raider games. Consider this, though: if you've played any of the Tomb Raider games, you'll see that they heavily borrow ideas from the Indiana Jones series. Thus, this game simply takes back some of the concepts that Tomb Raider took from its main character. It's only fair. Pick it up. While it's not exactly 5 stars, it's a good 4 and a 1/2. And for all the indy fans out there, this game is just full of all sorts of Indiana Jones-ish elements. I'm sure you'll dig it.

Great game, plot, graphics...

This is a great game. More than half of all problems people have are either hardware, or they have settings set to the worst that they can be. I have a 6 month old computer, and while I don't have (picture) perfect graphics, sound, controls, etc..., it is better than many other games I've played. The supposed pause between moves that I've heard griped about just acts to keep it realistic. The concept of Indy being able to jump, swim, climb, and shoot enemies without a break should raise enough eyebrows, but now people want him to hurl himself up off the edge of a cliff and keep running like nothing happened, or sumersault and keep going without a brief interlude...!

As for graphics, what do you expect? LucasArts doesn't want the system requirements to be a Cray... Maybe it doesn't look good on a Atari with a black and white TV hooked up to it... (I had one a few years ago)

Now for controls, most every game I play is on the keyboard. It isn't that hard. I have one joystick, and it is on the other computer, not that I have many games that could use one over there... Ok, there might be a lot of buttons, but that provides more control. If you actually used them, rather than pouting about how awful they are, they would get easier.

Overall, it is a great game. Most people are claiming it to be one of the best games of the year, or the opposite. It has a great plot, and you could easily see it as an Indy movie. There are 17 chapters, which is more than some games. Some levels (chapters) are really short, but some are really long. Some problems with it are that once you win, the fun is about half over, but then you want to replay it, just to see how well you can do now that you know what to do... At some points, I was totally lost about what to do, and the map hint thing can be kind of vauge sometimes, but all the more fun, right?
