Another spooky, thief-like game "where you have to think bfore you act, or you die" is perhaps a good way to sum up the game. The demo was a struggle as there was no tutorial. Perhaps I am being high maintenance, but I don't care to spend an hour trying to learn how to walk around!
In the game, there are two poimts of view, both third-person: the second view is much easier for navigation, as it brings the mouse into play for movement. Otherwise, it's soley a keyboard-based movement system, which can be challenging. I liked the graphics a great deal. The people in the game world stare at you if you are just standing there looking at them when you are setting up an ambush or doing something "unusual", just as they would in the real world if they saw you hiding behind a dumpster or something. It's a bit disconcerting, which is very appropriate for this style of game.
I will be buying the game when it comes out next month, and I do recommend it. Have patience, though, as there is a steep learning curve.
As a final note, the soundtrack (!) is way cool. Very Vangelis -like, with a sort of etherialness which is appropriate for the genre.
This game will be really good.

This is the kind of game we need more of. An action game that focuses more on strategy and ingenuity rather than balls-to-the-wall guns n' gore like "Soldier of Fortune" or "Quake III." Take this example of gameplay for example: You walk into a hotel, but there is metal detector at the door, forcing you to ditch all your weapons. Once through, you need to find a weapon. You go to the kitchen to steal a knife, but first you have to get rid of the chef. You can't use your knife because the blood would alert other people. Instead, you strangle him with your hands and stow him away in a cupboard. From the screenshots that have been released, it is difficult to tell if it is a first of third person perspective, but does it really matter? This game, which utilizes a brand-new graphics engine meaning it won't be just another clone of "Unreal Tournament", will definitely be one of the coolest games released this year.

Having just played the demo version, but earlier heard of hitman codename 47, I was stunned by the gameplay. The demo only contained just one mission, but I kept replaying until I did it perfectly.. Superb gameplay, and often quite difficult, this is a game for the mind. Watch how you are observed by the characters when you sniff around hot spots. Watch how they warn and interact with each other..it's nearly real..And the atmosphere and music are breathtaking! (marily manson music on the background should be even better!! hehehehehe)
So, people, if you want to feel this rush of being a perfect cool killer and getting away with it, you should defintely play this game...and don't get ethical about it.. for once..
and for the makers of this game: one shot, one kill. a HIT!
(Tested on a p3 600 32mb tnt2, runs fine on all platforms, even w2k)

i'm going to guess these people make console games or wish they did
This game is 3rd person, a *really* bad choice for this game. The camera is often stuck behind things
This game is hard. That's OK, but you can't save a game, and you *will* die thanks to some surprises, so expect to get bored playing the same thing over and over
There are only 11 maps i think, and most are _very_ small. The game is short, although they stretch out the game play by preventing you from saving the game
It's a minor complaint, but why don't any of these Asian gangsters recognize a tall, white, albino, bald guy with a UPC code on his head? Is his disguise of a shirt and pants really that good?
There are numerous bugs. Or maybe they aren't bugs, just bad design choices. For example, you can't walk through a guarded gate unless you first touch someone who has walked through it - bizare
This could have been a really good game, but it isn't.
Horrible beginning to a great series

Especially if you have already played Hitman 2, or Hitman: Contracts, do not buy this game. Perhaps it would have been fun, or less frustrating, had I -not- played the other two awesome games. This game is riddled with bugs, flaws, and just stupid design decisions.
The first is that it does not work on a great many newer computers. Fortunately, it works on mine, but I have tried lending it to two different people. Neither one could use it, and the Eidos Support page is very helpful, essentially saying it's Microsoft's fault, and they have no intentions of releasing a fix to make Hitman more compatible with newer systems.
The map is useless, showing only you and your exit point. It is even more frustrating than that, but there aren't enough words to describe everything, so I'll move on.
You cannot save; you must complete the entire mission before it will autosave for you.
You cannot check during the game to see if objectives have been completed; if you're unsure, for example, if you've properly hidden a body, or placed something at the scene of the crime, or maybe if you went on a rampage and aren't sure if you hit your target or not, you need to go all the way back to your Exit point to see if the objectives are marked as complete or not.
Many of the buttons and commands require you to be in a very specific location to access them. You can be looking directly at a button, moving the cursor around in front of it, but it may be that you need to be standing a few feet away, facing in the opposite direction to use it. Time-wasting trial and error is wonderful, especially when you can't save the game.
Finally, the AI is just great. I loved pulling a silenced gun a ways behind a civilian, sending him immediately running, as he obviously heard me pulling the gun from my coat. The old man then soaked three shots to the body. So these civilians are psychic -and- sporting body armor!
In conclusion, Hitman 2 was amazing fun. I opted for the Silent Assassin style myself. Hitman: Contracts was not as good as Hitman 2, but still great. The original, Hitman: Codename 47 shows me that the design team was lazy, the support team ineffective, and the game ended up being more frustration than it's worth to play. Buy one of the other games, and play it twice. Skip this one.
A good idea gone bad.

Playing this game was NOT a good experience. The people who designed it don't seem to have had a very good grasp of the concept that "slow and frustrating" does not equal "fun". I don't know how this less-than-impressive game was able to generate so many sequels, but I'm glad that it did, becuase the sequels are great! Even if it isn't designed very well, it does have a lot of originality, and I suppose that is what made it successful. Still, no matter how good the idea of the game is, it just isn't very much fun.
One of my biggest gripes is that you are not allowed to save your game in the middle of a level. If you die, you have to start all over. I really don't understand why they decided not to include a save feature. Being able to save doesn't necessarily make a game easier or less challenging, it just ensures that you don't have to do the same boring crap over and over again every time you screw up. And it is sooo easy to screw up in this game. It's a good thing they wised up and included a save feature in Hitman II.
Another gripe: the controls! They suck, big time! There is always this one magic spot you have to stand in to perform actions like opening doors and picking up items. To go through doors, you have to left click, then right click them. If you aren't standing in the exact right spot, this will make your gun will go off instead, sending every baddie in the area after you. And good luck ACTUALLY HITTING ANYTHING when you shoot. I can stand right in front of an enemy, point the crosshairs directly at the center of his head, fire, and the bullet will still hit the wall next to him. Of course, this makes him freak out and start shooting me (funny how the bad guys never have a problem hitting THEIR targets). Long range combat is virtually impossible, by the way.
This brings me to the most annoying thing of all, which are the enemies. The A.I. is terrible. They will just stand there as you walk right up to them and knife them. On the other hand, they will also freak out and start shooting at you for no apparent reason, even if you are wearing a disguise. When they are freakig out, they say the same things over and over and over again: "Hey, you!" "He's packing!" or "Alarm, alarm!" At least, that's what they say on the Hong Kong levels. In Colombia, they all say "You gonna die sucka!" over and over, while in the Budapest level they repeatedly shout "gun, gun!" only with Inspector Clouseau accents, so it sounds like "goon, goon!" Yes, the bad guys get REALLY irritating. You just want to kill them all ... but wait! You can't! If you don't get a head shot right away, you will have to pump a ridiculous amount of lead into the enemy in order to kill him. I've emptied entire clips into a single bad guy without killing him. I always assumed that 47 could take a lot of bullets because he was geneticly engeneered to have super strength. Were all these bad guys produced in the same laboratory that 47 was?
One more thing: am I the only one who is sick of doors that close by themselves in video games? How many times, in real life, have you seen a regular wooden door suddenly slam shut all by itself after it has been open for a certain amount of time? It's unrealistic, not to mention annoying. It's especiually annoying in Hitman, when doors have a habit of slamming in your face right when you about to walk or shoot through them. If I want a door to be closed, I'll close it myself, okay?
Great idea VERY POOR execution.

I had waited for this game after playing the demo and what a big letdown. First of all you cant really play the game longer than 30 to 45 minutes because it slows down to such a crawl that it takes you 10 seconds to perform a action. Its not my system, running a 1 GIG HP,128 mb memory and Nividia card, besides everthing else runs fine. Also the game has so many bugs that sometimes you have come so close to completing a mission and it crashs for no apparent reason, there is no save game feature so you end up repeating so much over and over. There are so many other ANNOYING bugs that i just dont have time to go onto. Check out the Eidos site and you will see that i am not the only one with these problems and the game is incomplete, one mission is to run from one end of the jungle to the other, and was rushed out for Christmas. A suggestion for Eidos change the name to CRASHMAN CODENAME 500 BUGS

Hitman Codename 47 is a third person action game with groundbreaking graphics and well desinged missions. Hitman supports Direct3D, OpenGL, 3dFx/Glide, I have played it on both D3D and OGL and they look really cool with no problems. The gameplay is orginal and it has a orginal story. You play Tobais Fleeper, He is assinged missions to kill gangsters. Who is he ?, Where did he come from ?, Play hitman and find out. HC47 has a very intresting gameplay, All the 12 missions are very well desinged with loads of admosphere. The game has high replay value, I played almost all the levels 5 times and i am still not bored, There is never a dull moment. The graphics are fantastic the guys at IO interactive have done a fantastic job. The sparks when bullets fly through with smoke comming out of the guns, The graphics depth and detail of the rain forest mission "Find the Uwa Tribe" is simply outstanding, Same goes to the atmosphere in the hotel mission "Traditions of the Trade". Hitman has the best graphics engine ever. Hitman's physics is also superb they must be seen to be belived. The sound is also superb and the music is just right for a game like this. The charecters are well animate and look real and the voice acting is great. Hitman does not have a save game option but that was not a problem to me, Besides the mission "Plutonium runs loose" in which you need to complete the mission in a short period of time, It was almost impossible. Every other mission can be completed without saving, In this game you are not a terrorist, You are a hitman if you plan your moves carefully you will succeed in the game.
Hitman could be a ground breaking game if it wasn't for all it's problems. The third person view is a bad choice for a game like this as the hitman's head and back block half of your view and it is not nice to see the bald head all the time. I dont know why people make action games in the third person view, Of all TPS games i have played only Heretic II and Tomb Raider were good and and a nice choice for the 3rd person view. HC47's keys are a big problem too, You need to both the keyboard and mouse to play the game. There are no hot keys for weapons or the inventory, The weapons and everything you pick up are kept on the inventory and to pick up a weapon you need to click on the inventory button, Use the scroll wheel and point to the weapon and press the action button to pick up. And besides this for just opening a door you need to right click on it and a small window would appear you need to use the scroll wheel to point on the "open door" option and click the action button to open it. When you kill someone you cannot carry the body like Thief, You need to drag the body that is very difficul as you have to bend and walk backwards and you cannot see clearly. The AI is not that very good, When you are dressup in hitman's clothes everybody gives you a suspesious look, When you have a weapon in your hand they are alert, That's good. But when you have a fiber wire in your hand people far away would scream that's unbelivable. Hitman's biggest problem is that there are lot of in game cutsences, And all in the wrong place, It causes a problem in the mission "Say Hello", You are to kill pablo, When i shot him there was a useless cutsence, He said he is stronger, by the time i managed to get my controls and aim he shot me twice, Is shot him again and another useless cutsence, For every shot a cutsences. Haven't the guy's at IO interactive played action games before. Cutsences takes the control away from the player and by the time you get the controls you will be killed. What idiot would have cutsence in a middle of a firefight. It is really sad that it has all these problems, It could have been a very enjoyable game if it is in the first perso view, with no in game cutsence and a better controls. Still hitman is a great game and i would recommend it, It is really worth a look. Finally after the credit titles it is written "Dont call us we are on vacation", What's that suppose to mean.
"Move without a sound and kill without emotion."

For years, gamers have been crying out for a game which forces you to think rather than shoot first. Hitman has attempted to answer the prayer. You play as 47, a Hitman who has no-idea who he is. Your job is simple, kill the target(s) and get out with little fuss.
Simple?
Well no it isn't, because you never know what to expect. Your job takes you to distant places like the Rotterdam, Japan and Romania. Plus you have to make sure there are no witnesses to the crime. Then you have to get out and OH MY!
This game has many a path through it. Sure you can simply shoot anything that moves, but where's the fun in that? The idea of the game is to use stealth. To help you, you can change your clothes and blend in with the crowd, just make sure you hide the body afterwards because if a guard finds it, then your in trouble!
If you start acting suspicously, I.E if you steal a key in the view of someone, then the guards will be notified ad they will hunt for you. I could go on forever, but I think I'll move on now...
You have many a weapon at your disposal, such as rifles, SMG's and a laughably lethal Minigun which can tear through the
target(s)like scissors to paper!
The graphic detail is quite graphic. If you shoot someone, then a red bullethole appears on them and they start to bleed. Same for slash marks etc.
But there are some truly dissapointing bits as well.
The A.I isn't good. And you can run in most places where there are plenty of armed guards. And sometimes the difficulty is off the roof. That and the fact that there is no mid-save option means you get really fustrated if you mess up in the final stretch and have to restart the whole thing.
This is a decent game but it lets itself down with silly little mistakes which can ruin the gameplay in places. But that doesn't stop it getting a decent score...
GOOD BITS
It's different
Lots of options
Detailed gore
Hard, very hard
BAD BITS
Hard, very hard
Stupid A.I
The verdict: 4 out of 5
ALTERNITIVE'S: If you like this sort of thing, then get Thief Gold for the PC.
Happy hunting
As hard as climbing a redwood tree blindfolded

Yes, this game is amazingly difficult, as the "Cons" say up above. The enemies do the same thing every time you play the level, so basically you just play the same level over and over to find out the scripting of that level so you can make an attempt to beat it. And quick, your hit might leave, so it's timed. Also, it took me an hour to beat the tutorial, which is required. And, even worse, you can't save during levels which makes it frustrating. Barely over 10 small maps. Maybe a few more. Bad Game.
