Best Baseball Game Out There

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 8

3DO did it again with this title. Ultra-realistic baseball with much improved graphics from the past. High Heat is so much better than EA Sports' title Triple Play Baseball. High Heat is great for that fan who wants every last baseball detail.

High Heat 2002 is not worth the money

The most anticipated game from the company that brought us High Heat 2001 --what many consider the best baseball simulation if not the best sports game ever-- is a dud! High Heat 2002 is not worth the ... asking price, it isn't even worth ... and here are the reasons: *Graphics compatability -- Last years version was fully compatable with many laptops. The requirements that 3DO says the game needs are met by my laptop. Even Triple Play 2002 works on my laptop. High Heat does not and it wasn't designed to work, even though tech support said it should. *Graphics Overall -- The players look like guerillas! Who ever designed the models apperently has never seen a human being, let alone knows what one looks like when swinging a bat, throwing a ball or running. I have a top of the line 3D accelerator on my desk top, but even that does not help. The players' helmets are so bright, they look like night lights and the bats look like lightsabers. I keep expecting Obi-wan and Darth Maul to come jumping out of the dugout for a turn at bat. Plus fan animation would have been nice, but it doesn't exist. *Added features --rain outs, 40 man roster in September, nice but to sacrice the look of the game. No *In general it seems while they were tweaking the engine, the plain and simple truth is they ruined a great game. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It really is no better than Triple Play 2002, which isn't great in and of itself. Bottom line save your money or buy NHL 2001 and play that all summer like I plan to.

The guys have done it again! Get this!

They realized that they didn't need a "name" on the title to sell the product (Last year's edition was "Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball". This product can stand on it's own, it doesn't need a "name" to sell it. The story goes that Vladimir Guerrero was using last year's version to help time himself against certain pitchers, and 3DO heard about that and put him on the box - if a real player uses the game, shouldn't you?

This is by far the best PC baseball game out there. Are the graphics the best? No, probably not. However, it is the best representation of a "baseball game" you can find on the PC. New stuff this year is great - new camera angles, graphics, sound, animations, manager mound visits, snap throws. It just gets better and better!

One of these days, they might get to "High Heat Virtual Reality Baseball 2038" where you're actually *IN* the game. :) Until we get there, this is about as good as you can get. Get this, you won't be disappointed.

This game is head and shoulders above the competition. I am a true baseball fan and this game had the most realistic game play I had ever seen. Baseball fans should really enjoy it.

The absolute best baseball ever - period!!! Better than the 2001 edition, and I did not think that possible. A classic. The gameplay, graphics, stadiums, simulation, etc... is totally realistic. A must buy! The premiere grand-cru of baseball games.

Very good but not quite great

Right out of the box this game has a few problems. 1) I was playing the game and I hit the ball into the outfield when all of the sudden the outfield started to warp out and get all fuzzy. I called 3do and they said that it was a problem with my Nvidia geForce 2 ultra card. They had me turn off the AP texturing and it stopped. 2)The play by play is much better then last year, more forcefull and more accurate, however when the stadium announcer is talking and the play by play guys start to talk while the music starts to play what happens is it sounds like they are talking under water and then cuts out. I again called 3do and they told me to do some things and if that did not work try to download new sound card drivers (I have a pentium 4 1.5 ghz system, my drivers are new)It did not work 3) Its bottom of the 8th, the game is tied and I am at the plate with bases loaded and two outs, zzzzzzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg, the game kicks me out and straight to my desk top. Another call to 3do and I get a Hhhmmmm. The game has bugs that should have been fixed prior to release and this is very aggrivating to me. Now if you can get through all of that and actually play the game you will be treated to a good game. Graphics are pretty good, and game play is fun. I also enjoyed some of the new features, you can visit the mound if your pitcher is having trouble, it rains, players argue with the umps and can get suspended. When a ball is popped up you see one of the players point to the sky, and game play is very rapid. So is it fun? Well yes it is, it is a very good game that could have been great and still may be when the problems I discussed are fixed. You can either buy this game and get angry as you have fun or you can wait until the bugs are squashed.

This game is awesome.

This is the best sports game that i have played. As an all around sports fan (not a die-hard baseball fan) I find this game is a lot of fun. The graphics are awesome and the pitching, batting and fielding just feel right (vs. Triple Play which is all messed up). As a Dodger fan, it was cool to see that Kevin Brown not only has all his real pitches, but his windup looks exactly like real life. The music is great too. Get it.

Disappointing

I have been waiting months for this game to come out, and the day the local software store got it in I rushed out and bought it right away. I was so excited, I couldn't WAIT to play! Thank god this store has a great return policy on open software.

I am a HUGE fan of High Heat, but this year took a step backwards. The graphics, while improved in some aspects and worsened in others are alright. The animations seem too fast, I liked the "tight" feel of 2001. I also don't like the new blue stat/score boxes in-game. They look blocky and the font is bad.

The sound has really not improved. All of the sounds from 2001 have been carried over to 2002 with the exception of new announcer voices. The Main Menu and Options screens now have varying musical themes following a rock/techno theme, what they have to do with baseball is beyond me.

My main problem is the differences with the difficulty settings. If you play on "Rookie" level you are pretty much going to win no matter what. Bump it up to "Triple A" and it's pretty much the same (I have had 10-16 run innings many times, I even won a game 46-0). So go up one more notch to "Pro" and all of the sudden the computer is pitching one-hitters and nailing every pitch you throw to him no matter how much you switch it up. And what's even more bothersome is that there is 2 more difficulty levels above that! Better balance with the levels would have been a nice touch.

More minor problems include your baserunners with a mind of their own even when you specifically state in the options that you want full control. Announcers saying things at the wrong times or audio being cut off half way through their sentence. I even had the game dump to my desktop right as I hit a game winning homerun before.

I'm not saying that this game is absolutely terrible, I just don't think it was an improvement over 2001 which I belive is one of the best games I have ever played. High Heat 2001 never made me pound on my keyboard or swear at my monitor in frustration....every single game of 2002 did.

*Word of note for anyone who is having a problem with their graphics when a ball is hit into the outfiled. There is a box in the "Preferences" screen right underneath your Video Card selction with a check mark in it. You need to un-check it every time you go into the Preferences screen because for some reason it likes to automatically re-check itself every time you enter Preferences.

Buggin' Out on Baseball

In a word: bugs. Way too many of them. They range from minor irritations (the play-by-play announcer and color commentator talking simultaneously) to major league bobbles, like being kicked out of the game and back to the desktop for having the audacity to hit a fly ball to right field. All of this may be and should be fixed in a patch, but right now I'd advise anyone to hold off and save yourself a lot of frustration.

It's too bad. This could have been (and still might be, if the fixes come quickly) a great game. Game play is first rate when it works correctly, and the attention to the strategic details of the game is truly impresssive. Somebody(s) at 3DO clearly know and love baseball. But this year's version has clearly been rushed out of the bullpen without a proper warmup. Wait till the bugs are fixed.

Could be a good game if...

It could be a good game if it was actually playable, but like it has been mentioned in other rebiews that game just doesn't work. I get kicked out back to the desktop. The game freezzes. The audio sounds like a new born baby mumbling. I've contacted customer support and they act like it is some big suprise that the game does not work. There response was hmmm that is unusual, as if to say I am the only one having a problem. I tried changing the video settings on my computer but nothing has worked. I recomend holding off till 3DO wakes up and realizes something is wrong.
