if you like blood, "gibbing", and dismemberment, you'll have to do a few things to the game before you play. This is a censored version and there was no way for me to reenable the blood and gore. Trying all suggestions found on the internet failed. The version that installs is 1.06a. 1.06 is the latest "Enhanced" version from Activision. The "a" version is censored and requires an original "quake2.dll" file to function as it was intended. This is easily done by downloading the 1.06 Enhancement Pack Update (4MB) from Activision. The Full Enhancement Pack (15MB) is not needed, since the pak files are already upgraded. Just a little tid-bit before you buy.

This game gets it done in a way that tomb raider only wishes it could. When I first booted it up, it plunged me straight into its vibrant world. This is not a slow paced "action-adventure" tomb raider clone, this is a first rate third-person action game. Heretic 2 combines excellent graphics, a decent story, extremely FUN combat (the melee combat was a particular favorite), and some puzzle solving. If you liked tomb-raider and its clones, try this. You wont ever go back.

this game is really fun, i hate hearing it being compared to tombraider, this game surpasses it, its not even in the sameleague.
the game really didn't take off comercially (compared to quake2/3), and wasn't really popular for some reason, the reviews from magazines were good, like 88/100. But sales were low, and the heretic2 community was small compared to quakes'. That is probably why it is 10 bucks, but the public's loss is your gain. There are still online servers to play at, do not think this game has been abandoned tottaly.
the online battles are like a real time final fantasy 7 battle, lots of magic and cool 3D effects, plus lots of hand to hand combat with swords and staffs. a lot of fun, and the story of single player mode is good :)
my computer specs are p3 - 450 mhz, and a tnt1 card with 16mb.. the game runs pretty smooth, and is very nice to look at, be sure you have a nice setup, at least 100+ megs of ram, and a tnt or voodoo3 card.. okay peace

Heretic II is the latest sequal to the heretic and hexen games, It is a third person action game. I am a big fan of the heretic/hexen games expecially Hexen II, Heretic II is a good game with an average plot, The atmosphere is very nice, and creepy in some parts, I also liked the weapons. The story is the hero corvus retuns to his village only to find that his people are infected with a plague, He has to travel through many places to search and find a cure, There are swamps, cities, canyons, castles, Mountain Fortress ect, Sure there are many villans to keep you busy fighting on the way. You play Corvus, He can swim, climb, pole vault using his staff ect and there are even magic spells as weapons, You have to fight zombies, Gaurds birds, wild cats ect. The third person prespective is a good choice for the game. Heretic II is the first third person game that is not frustrating, The camera angle never gets awckward and the third person view is superb, Raven software has done a fantastic job.
Heretic II is built on the Quake II engine, The game runs very smoothly and the graphics are fantastic, Even half life which uses the same engine was not this colourfull, If Hexen II was Quake in colour then Heretic II is Quake II in colour, The sound effects is good too but the AI is about average. The level designing is excellent, It gives a great replay value, My favorite is "The Gauntlet" i wish there was more of it. The weapons and the weapon effects are superb, The spear is a great weapon, Almost all land creatures except the bosses can be destroyed with three or four strikes, It can be upgraded to be more powefull if you pick the blade shrine, All weapon can be upgraded to be more powefull for a short period of time using the tomb of power. Heretic II is the best third person game i have ever played, It is a not to be missed game if you like action games.

Heretic II is a game that I must feel affection for. It features beautiful levels graced with colors so vivid I sometimes feel the need to squint. And "Curvos," the figure you control, is a hero in every sense of the word because he rolls, pole vaults, climbs, jumps, and runs through these levels all the while blasting his enemies with an arsenal of powerful weapons. What's not to like about this game?
Well, there are some minor flaws. Many of the levels are quite confusing, and you often believe you are making substantial progress only to find yourself back where you started. Since your camera angle is from a fair distance behind Curvos, you may have difficulty seeing to the side allowing you to be ambushed by enemies or making you miss an important passage. Hence, in some parts of the game finding your way through the level can be tedious and frustrating. Some of the puzzles can also be tedious and frustrating requiring you to reload the game repeatedly after you die from a fall or from sinking into lava.
Despite these flaws, Heretic II is a truly fine game. It's a feast for both the eyes and the ears. This game brings a virtual world of high fantasy to life on your PC. Enter this world and be amazed.
Addendum:
It's two years later, and I'm not able to play Heretic II anymore--well, at least it doesn't play the way it should. I "upgraded" to Windows XP which was installed on my new computer, and to my chagrine it doesn't play right. Most of the problems I've encountered reside in the load menu. It loads OK from the start of a level, but it won't load after the start resulting in my being unable to load at the point right before I died!
It's only fair to warn those of you who might be thinking of running this game in Windows XP. Damn Microsoft!

Before I found this game I thought that I was through with first person shooters. After playing just about every version of Doom, Heretic, and Hexen over the years I was pretty much bored with the concept. Plus, the "gritty reality" of Quake 2 really turned me off after only playing it all the way through a couple of times. Then I found Heretic 2, and once again found myself completely immersed in a fantasy world for the first time in years.
The third person interface took a little while to get used to, but now I truly believe that it is the smoothest and most instinctual way to go. Plus, the levels are intricate, detailed, and attractive. You actually look forward to seeing what is around the next corner (as opposed to the grim, repetitious, industrial hell of Quake 2.) Finally, the story line is interesting and satisfying. This game is laid out in a linear manner (no constant backtracking to a common hub) so it works very well with the concept of a quest.
The basic storyline is that Corvus, the hero that slew Serpent Rider and his minions, has returned to Parthoris after an unexpected detour through the outer realms. He finds that the land is revaged by a plague that turns the inhabitants into murderous zombies. It is an artificially created plague resulting from the corrupted efforts of the seraph, Morcalavin, to achieve ascension and immortality.
If you were into the old Heretic and the story of the Sidhe and the Serpent Riders then this game will be a pleasant blast from the past (only with modern high resolution graphics.)

Heretic 2 leaves all other third person and first person shotters/action games in the dust. Heretic two has great graphics and gameplay. The enviroments and people are also verry interactive. By the way the system requirements are wrong, you NEED a pent 166 w/ hardware acc(2meg),pent200 reccomended and 32 megs of ram, 64recc

This game is the sequel to Heretic and Hexen. It is awesome in every department; from graphics to story to sound to performance. I bought this game when it first came out (...) and I have never regretted it. Trust me (...) you can't go wrong. Check out my list for other great bargain buys.

Having been a big fan of the first Heretic when it was out, as well as playing both Hexen and Hexen 2, I wanted to get this to complete my collection. Unfortunately it's not set up like all of the others.
Setup similar to a Tomb Raider style of control, you have to learn a number of moves with your character. Thus taking away the easy transition in from the earlier game in this series. Don't get me wrong, I actually really love Tomb Raider and other games like it. Though when I went to play this one it just wasn't what I was expecting.
Overall the game is well done once you get used to the new controls. The story line is intriguing and allows you to get more into the game. Graphics and Music are also fairly well done. I was just a little thrown off by the change from what I was used to.
