Changing perspective...

Being a fan of Doom, Doom II and Heretic, I was excited that I could finally purchase Heretic II. It is much more fun, graphically elaborate and intersting to go through than the first three mentioned. I am still going through the levels and having a lot of fun with it.

(Added 1/10/02) I have been caught up in a few of the game's glitches for a while now. I have been looking online to see if there is a patch or something, but nothing yet. I have lowered my rating and added this as it is not what I had thought it would be. It has become much more frustrating.

Limited game play.

I don't know. Perhaps the Heretic II I've purchased is a prototype. I ran around on the scene. I removed the opposition. That was 'bout it. I couldn't leave the initial scene.

Honestly: I don't think the game contains any more. BOO!

Just another RPG

Having been a big fan of the first Heretic when it was out, as well as playing both Hexen and Hexen 2, I wanted to get this to complete my collection. Unfortunately it's not set up like all of the others.

Setup similar to a Tomb Raider style of control, you have to learn a number of moves with your character. Thus taking away the easy transition in from the earlier game in this series. Don't get me wrong, I actually really love Tomb Raider and other games like it. Though when I went to play this one it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Overall the game is well done once you get used to the new controls. The story line is intriguing and allows you to get more into the game. Graphics and Music are also fairly well done. I was just a little thrown off by the change from what I was used to.

Excellent game

using the Quake 2 engine this game has plenty of action and exploring to be done. It also has a tutorial to get you adjusted to the cusomized controls. and don't forget to download the update from the activision web site.

Great game, but...

if you like blood, "gibbing", and dismemberment, you'll have to do a few things to the game before you play. This is a censored version and there was no way for me to reenable the blood and gore. Trying all suggestions found on the internet failed. The version that installs is 1.06a. 1.06 is the latest "Enhanced" version from Activision. The "a" version is censored and requires an original "quake2.dll" file to function as it was intended. This is easily done by downloading the 1.06 Enhancement Pack Update (4MB) from Activision. The Full Enhancement Pack (15MB) is not needed, since the pak files are already upgraded. Just a little tid-bit before you buy.

A Great Game For a Great Price

This game is the sequel to Heretic and Hexen. It is awesome in every department; from graphics to story to sound to performance. I bought this game when it first came out (...) and I have never regretted it. Trust me (...) you can't go wrong. Check out my list for other great bargain buys.

An Unsung Classic

This game featured what I can only call the second best implementation of the Quake II engine (the best being Half Life). The graphics on this game are nothing short of spectacular, and the game play in both single and multiplayer modes is superior. It is an addicting game with plenty of heart pumping action and visual eye candy to last you for hours. For ten dollars you can not go wrong here. This gem was overlooked by the masses who were too enraptured by Quake 2 and Unreal at the time of its release. Don't be one of the ones who missed it!

Great Game!

This is a great game! It was quite surprising actually to see the sequel to the first heretic to be such a good one. Not that the first one is bad it's just that the second one is better. This is a game where you really don't know what will happen next and you don't know what to expect and that is what makes it so great. Not only that, but the realistic locations and the different sound effects make you really apart of the game. It's also a pretty interesting plot and well thought out. I've always had fun playing this game and always will! I recommend this game to anyone that enjoys a good computer game!

this game is really fun, i hate hearing it being compared to tombraider, this game surpasses it, its not even in the sameleague.

the game really didn't take off comercially (compared to quake2/3), and wasn't really popular for some reason, the reviews from magazines were good, like 88/100. But sales were low, and the heretic2 community was small compared to quakes'. That is probably why it is 10 bucks, but the public's loss is your gain. There are still online servers to play at, do not think this game has been abandoned tottaly.

the online battles are like a real time final fantasy 7 battle, lots of magic and cool 3D effects, plus lots of hand to hand combat with swords and staffs. a lot of fun, and the story of single player mode is good :)

my computer specs are p3 - 450 mhz, and a tnt1 card with 16mb.. the game runs pretty smooth, and is very nice to look at, be sure you have a nice setup, at least 100+ megs of ram, and a tnt or voodoo3 card.. okay peace

High Quality Fantasy Brought to Life

Heretic II is a game that I must feel affection for. It features beautiful levels graced with colors so vivid I sometimes feel the need to squint. And "Curvos," the figure you control, is a hero in every sense of the word because he rolls, pole vaults, climbs, jumps, and runs through these levels all the while blasting his enemies with an arsenal of powerful weapons. What's not to like about this game?

Well, there are some minor flaws. Many of the levels are quite confusing, and you often believe you are making substantial progress only to find yourself back where you started. Since your camera angle is from a fair distance behind Curvos, you may have difficulty seeing to the side allowing you to be ambushed by enemies or making you miss an important passage. Hence, in some parts of the game finding your way through the level can be tedious and frustrating. Some of the puzzles can also be tedious and frustrating requiring you to reload the game repeatedly after you die from a fall or from sinking into lava.

Despite these flaws, Heretic II is a truly fine game. It's a feast for both the eyes and the ears. This game brings a virtual world of high fantasy to life on your PC. Enter this world and be amazed.

Addendum:

It's two years later, and I'm not able to play Heretic II anymore--well, at least it doesn't play the way it should. I "upgraded" to Windows XP which was installed on my new computer, and to my chagrine it doesn't play right. Most of the problems I've encountered reside in the load menu. It loads OK from the start of a level, but it won't load after the start resulting in my being unable to load at the point right before I died!

It's only fair to warn those of you who might be thinking of running this game in Windows XP. Damn Microsoft!
