This game is great! The only problem was that I had already played the Super Nintendo version, and, because this game is so similar, I found it kind of boring. But if you've never played the SNES version or don't want to buy a SNES to play it, you should get this game the graphics are great, the sound is awesome, and it's not that hard to play. I really recommend getting this game, unless you have played and beaten (or almost beaten) the SNES version.
Best graphics of any Game Boy Color game

This is a terrific game. It is unfair to compare it to other NES versions of the game. For the game boy color, this has the best graphics I have seen. The game play is great it holds my attention for hours. I am 32 year old adult. I love to take my Game Boy on business trips. This game has memory too so you can save the level you are on and go back later. You can save up to 3 different games in memory. There are also special features with little mini games. You can play in 4 languages. And there are special features for Game Boy Camera and the Game Boy Printer. I don't have these but my son does.
Not the Best Port Ever...

The original Donkey Kong Country came at the height of the 16-bit era and featured stunning CGI-rendered graphics and an awesome soundtrack. It was no easy task for Rare to compress this all into a Game Boy Color cartridge. Rare succeeded in some aspects, but fell short in the most vital ones.
To its credit, the game does manage to capture the general feel and essence of the SNES game, despite the hardware limitations. The screen is richly populated and detailed with stylings direct from the SNES game, downsampled of course. The levels are all here.
That said, think of the SNES Donkey Kong Country with Donkey Kong Land controls. Eew.
The problem with the game comes from its poor controls, hit detection, and general field of vision. The controls are clearly modeled after those in the Donkey Kong Land games, which I always thought felt way too "loose" for making precision moves and certainly not as tight as the SNES versions. Couple this with shoddy hit detection and you have a real problem. The enemies are much bigger than they really appear to be and trying to weave through dense fields of them (like in the forest stages) gets to be outright frustrating. Another point where this become apparently involves the derailed mine carts sitting on the tracks. Believe me - you will convince yourself that you successfully jumped over them only to have the game kill you. ARGH! That stage took me no less than a dozen tries.
The third dynamic that complicates the game is the smaller field of vision. Relative to the SNES incarnation, you just plain can't see as much at once. Now, of course, this is a very understandable limitation. However, the way it propagates itself in the game is not pretty. There are plenty of blind leaps of faith. In fast-moving stages (like the aforementioned mine cart stage), there is very little time to react to upcoming obstacles. Even if you remembered the layout of the stages in the SNES game, you still have the wonky hit detection to contend with.
Overall, I cannot really recommend this game to anyone unless they enjoyed the Donkey Kong Land games. This title has more in common with those than being a good port of the SNES game.
Pros: Good graphics and decent sound. Levels are faithfully built to mirror their SNES counterparts. Little was sacrificed in basic game structure.
Cons: Frustrating hit-detection and inaccurate controls. Field of vision seems too small.

If you like a game that is not so much challenging, but adventurous. You will like this game. I beat it in two days, but it is a fun game.

It's kinda easy, but great graphics for a Game Boy Color game! It has music that it's so good, if you don't play in months, you'll hear the sound of DK Country. Mainpoint: GET IT! Since none are here, go to the Computer & Video Games area of Amazon and get it there!
fun game

This game is indeed a classic, and i must say i loved the SNES version. However, the lighting isn't as good, but i guess you can find that with any game boy color. Overall this is a very good game!!!!!!!!
Barely any difference!

If you like Donkey Kong Country, play this version for the Game Boy Color.
it's GREAT! almost exactly alike, plus 2 new bonus games, AND candy kongs's "save points" from the SNES game are turned into mini games, you don't have to save, it does that by itself!!
overall, if you loved the origanal DKC, but this, it's a step up, but with worse graphics, and sound quality, but hey, what do you ecpect from the game boy color? TV sound quality, NO!
great game

Donkey Kong Country is the second best game for GBC. On the other reviews, the sound was said to have been bad. But, guess what? My sound dosen't work anyway, making it as perfect as it could be, as the graphics are the best I've seen on GBC, and the plot is excellent too!
Very fun but gets boring after a while.

In the begining it was so fun. Donkey Kong Country was my first game I got for GBC. I absolutely loved it. I got my GBC system on January 2,2001 and it is already sort of boring. I'm getting a new game very, very, very soon. I'm happy cause the game is getting boring. I got to the third island already. It took me a long time. Oh and that is another thing. If you get mad very quickly or have a short tolerence don't get this game. It is sometimes very hard. It might take people a while to even win a game. I had this game for SNES so almost all the games were really easy. I can't beat the second game on the third land so I keep starting over. Then when I get to the point were I was started over again. It is a nice game . It could be one of the best games for GBC. That is why I rate this game 4 Stars. It is probally good for kids that are 4-10 years old. It is probally even better for younger kids because thay might like playing the same game over and over again.
